Today was our full day in Ayutthaya, after arriving yesterday and grabbing some grub. We decided today we would either rent bicycles of motorbikes – depending on rental prices. We enquired: 80 baht (£1.60) for two bicycles for the day or 400 baht (£8) for two motorbikes for the day. Although when you convert it into English money, the motorbikes were a good deal, we decided to be stingy and sweat it out on the push bikes. We had already drawn up a rough route on the awful tourist map they give you here (there are no street names on the map so even figuring out where we were staying was difficult. I spent 20mins last night using lonely planet and google maps to figure it out and scribble all the names onto it). Our route ... read more

This morning we woke up and got a lift at 10 to the bus station to get the mini-van to Ayutthaya. Everyone came to the bus station to see us off, it was lovely, and Len’s sister had made us some little flip flop clay things as souvenirs. The journey was longer than that from Bangkok and actually involved two mini-buses but we eventually made it and found a guest house that is nice (even if you do have to force the door to the ensuite open past the sink and have to practically sit on the toilet to have a shower). We had a little walk around to orientate ourselves, and were in awe already of the old ruins that are beautiful. Both of us noticed that Ayutthaya is less popular with tourists right now ... read more

It was an early 9am start for us (yawn, haha!) followed by a 3rd class train ride to Ayuthaya. the train was really hot but bearable and we both dozed on and off for the 2hr journey. Outside the open train windows we pass little huts that people live in made out of wood and corrugated iron, people roam the train lines collecting rubbish. As we get further from the capital the land gets swampy and the huts even more rickety, balanced on stilts and connected by wobbly looking, plank walk ways. The owner of our GH was a lovely midle aged lady who gave us a map and some suggestions of what to do. On our first afternoon we rode a tuktuk to some temple ruins. Wat Maha that was the first old temple we ... read more

I decided that I need to go to the beach, so with that in mind, and to make sure I didn't miss it, I decided on a day trip to Ayutthaya. Unfortunately the night before, I had met an ex-pat, owner of the Oh my cod restaurants which are in both Bangkok and Pattaya. So we sat and drank and talked. One beer too many left me feeling wonderful at 6 o'clock when I needed to get up for my trip. Luckily the breakfast supplied at the restaurant of my new found friend, was as english as I have ever found out here and lovely. It certainly went a long way to help with the way that I was feeling. To anyone that comes to Bangkok and is looking for a good english breakfast, I truly ... read more

We decided on a day trip to the ruins of the central plains north of Bangkok today, and thought the best deal was to take a bus tour up there (about 70km) and take a river cruise back. We went with the Grand Pearl company, very organized! From Bangkok to the Royal palace, Bang Pa-in, super peaceful and calm, then on to the ruins at Mahathat and then Ayutthaya. The huge gilded Budda in the temple there was very impressive, and we were able to feed and pet the "royal" elephants. the guide then took us back to the river where we boarded a boat, and had lunch cruising back to Bangkok. It was a very hot, tiring day, but after a swim, we headed out to find a restaurant that was in the fodor's guide: ... read more

Unfortunately, on our journey to our next destination, we were accompanied by a group of backpackers who epitomised all of our worst fears about type of fellow travellers we would meet on our trip. We were subjected to 4 hours of them swearing, showing off about how many happy shakes and mushroom pizzas they had consumed and the amount of money they had spent on tattoos (one of them had spent over £600), and then complaining they were too broke to see any sights. When we arrived in Ayutthaya we breathed a sigh of relief when they got off at a hostel a few stops before us. Over the next day and another very early morning we set out on foot to explore the ancient capital and its temple ruins. The city was founded in 1351 ... read more

No i didnt have a massage from blind men but the advert made me laugh. Leanne and I are currently in Ayutthaya and have seen all the temples (world heritage site). We also visited the elephant temple but I had to leave as the elephants looked distressed. We plan to make our way to Kanchanaburi as others have told us its worth checking out. Fin happens to be in Ayutthaya at the moment so hopefully we can catch him before we leave.Craving some 'western' food at the moment. We have been very good so far and have eaten at local restaurants much to the amusement of some of the Locals. We tried a Thai Green Cuury the other day,it nearly made me cry. The people are very nice here. Everyone has been nice in Thailand so far ... read more

Sawadi Ka (Hello in Thai), Today I'll do a brief sum up of what I did during the last 3 weeks of my trip in Cambodia. After Siem Reap, I went to Kampong Thom to see some old temples. They are less impressive than Angkor, but they are so much less tourists, that make the walk around so much more peaceful. From there, I went to Kratie to see some fresh water Irrawaddy dolphins. In the town itself, there is not much to do but the trip to see the dolphins is nice enough to spend a day there. After that, I headed to Stung Treng, where I spent a day cycling around, along the river, which was really enjoyable and relaxing. I watched the day to day life in Cambodia, while waving to a lot ... read more

Hello everyone, (Pour le francais, voir plus bas) I know, it's been a long time, but my computer crashed, so I couldn't work on the blog anymore, but I got myself a new computer, so I'm back! As I'm really late, I will do short texts until I'll arrive to where I am now. So in the last post, I just arrived in Siem Reap, which is a nice town, a bit too much touristic for me, but still nice. But the main thing to see here are the Angkor temples. They are magnificent!!!!! They are in all kind of state: some are just pile of rocks, some are still standing up and proud. A small history lesson first: Angkor is a region of Cambodia that served as the seat of the Khmer Empire, which flourished ... read more
