Background: In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan. Taiwan reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1946 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within the governing structure. In 2000, Taiwan underwent its first peaceful transfer of power from the Nationalist to the Democratic Progressive Party. Throughout this period, the island prospered and became one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China - specifically the question of eventual unification - as well as domestic political and economic reform.

So I land in Taipei at around 19:30 delighted to finally be here and to be done with travelling. It's taken about 16 hours to get from London to here which I guess isn't too bad. Can i just make two points about the journey. Both Heathrow T5 and BA have had a bad press over the last year or so but I thought they were great. T5 is an outstanding piece of architecture, so much better than the other hellhole terminals. My bags connected fine at Hong Kong (as did I) and i felt that the £25 charge from BA [View Full Entry]

Martin's place

Hello/AOA to all! We have just arrived in the Taipei airport after our 13 1/2 hour flight! The flight was not that bad. I was able to sleep for about 8 hours and Tayyaba slept a little less. The food we had on the flight was chinese noodles for a snack and then for breakfast we shared scrambled eggs and some chinese type of porridge that had carrots, peas, and chicken it it. The plane was huge and we are glad we have the longest leg of our trip behind us! We have one hour until our plane leaves from here [View Full Entry]

trying to call home!

Deodorant and a quick brushing do not a shower make. Sitting in the Taipei airport waiting for my next flight to Bangkok. From there, it will be a slow slog into the city, a 10-hour train ride north to Chiang Mai, and a 3-4 hour bus ride to get me near Mai Ai. I think that means I get there on Saturday. Though last I checked, it was Wednesday. On the long flight over, I sat next to a health worker from Indonesia, who had gotten 3 weeks off to take his 3 kids (all born in LA) and wife back [View Full Entry]

March 20, 11:24PM: We finally made it! To the airport that is. Thanks to my sister and Phil, Adam and I got to SFO at 10:00PM (You two rock!). With three hours to kill, we wondered around the domestic & international terminals and read our books. Cassie is currently reading Living Dead in Dallas; Adam is currently reading One Square Mile of Hell. It’s currently 1:24PM Bangkok time. We must stay awake for 9 more hours to stick to our new time zone for the next two weeks! Can we do it? I don’t think so….zzzzzzzzzzzzz. We miss Abby and Coco [View Full Entry]

1st taste of Taiwan
U Bus to Taoyuan Station

A few reasons why Taiwan is the best country ever (even though it dosen't officially exist) They fed me TWICE on their flight. They have very attractive and kind stewardesses. They have FREE INTERNET in their airport. Strangers come up to you and tell you in broken english that they like your "mustachae" (beard) and America. As anyone who has been my roomie knows, I love crazy Asian TV. ALL THEY HAVE is crazy Asian tv. They have touch screen computers with on-demand content in their ECONOMY CLASS SECTION. Even though the food was fine, they have a message displayed on [View Full Entry]

I wonder how many times I've flown out of this airport. I'm glad it's being re-modeled right now. 13.5 hours later... Layover at CKS中正/桃園Tao Yuan International Airport depending on your nationalist flavor/fervor. I realize I've never flown into Taiwan at dawn, I usually come in at night. Pretty stunning views of Ilha Formusa, Dan Shui (淡水河), and that bridge here: The election has certainly changed Taiwan in some ways, last year it all the billboards were clamoring for UN recognition of Taiwan: Other things do not change: [View Full Entry]
