Sunday 4th December 2005 Peter and I found ourselves a seat and deposited our bags at the front almost on top of an alcove housing a huge and ancient gear shaft. Apparently this is where the large luggage sits to save space for more seats. It wasn’t too packed to start with though and I had a double seat to myself. I am looking forward to the scenery I am going to see on this journey and also an opportunity to review my trip so far. We passed by little villages and groups of white and blue uniformed school children on their way to lessons. The bus began to rise steadily higher. Sinharaja is referred to as low country but we were now in mid country heading eventually to Bandarawela, which is in the lower part ... read more

In a moment I was racing away from Unawatuna and the south coast, very soon into country roads passing by quaint homes with flowering gardens surrounded on either side of the road by dense, fresh green. Plants, palms and trees grow everywhere. After 20km or so, perhaps less, our path began to rise and the views changed as we passed by tea plantations. I didn’t think this area was known as the tea country. Where there was not hills of rising, layered pruned tea there were flat areas of rice fields but mainly just tea growing wild everywhere. The landscape was incredibly green, abundant, lush and tropical. I was so excited and felt so carefree watching a new world whiz by. It was a great way to travel being so close to the landscape I was ... read more

So we had made our way back to the Pink House. We DID have Cothu Rothi, I DID buy clothes (I ended up buying 5 shirts - and giving away most of my old ones to charity - all for 240 rupees...about 1.5 pounds!). The next day after we had arrived in Kandy, Ival received a telephone call from the rafting people back in Kilingatele. They had found his camera! Turns out a young 17 year old Sri Lankan boy had stolen it from the back of a rickshaw - and while being questioned by the police, his friend ratted him out! We were all - understandably - extremely pleased, but it turned out that the only way of getting the camera was to do the entire 3 hour bus ride back to the rafting center! ... read more

I woke up feeling quite groggy but after a shower and breakfast I soon came round. I spent the rest of the morning writing and drinking coffee. Later I got myself packed up and ready to move again. Only about 5 kilometres South East to Unawatuna this time! I had a nice surprise when I got the bill from Mrs Khalid. She had not charged me for breakfast or coffee or any extra taxes, which I was expecting. I gave her a box of Pot Pourri for her kindness and hospitality. We had a chat about each other’s family and she told me about her son’s studies. I took a tuk-tuk to Unawatuna. There was not much time to check out the landscape on this journey down Matara road but long enough to see the replacement ... read more

When we left Dalhousie, the manager of our hotel told us that Kiligatene was an expensive place to stay the night, and that we should look into staying at the neighboring town. So we caught the bus (once again in quite a round-about way - in true Sri Lankan public bus fashion) and once we got to the neighboring town, we found a cheap place to stay (made even more cheap because we ended up staying in a double room, with me sleeping on the floor with my inflatable mattress (yeah to budget travel!)). That night was interesting to say the least...in order to entertain ourselves, we decided to rent a video to watch on the TV in the living area of our guesthouse. We bought some cothu roti in town, and were all ready for ... read more

Wednesday 30th November 2005 I woke up at 05.00 and lay in bed thinking about the day ahead and getting to Galle. I packed up and waited for the time to move on. Once I was awake I felt uncomfortable due to the mosquitos. I took a taxi to the train station and bought my ticket to Colombo Fort. I chatted to an Englishman aged about 75 whilst I was waiting at the platform. He was stationed here during his national service and had fallen in love with the country and came back when he retired for a holiday and him and various members of his family have been coming back every year since 1990. He said that they were down in the south when the Tsunami came last Boxing Day and that they could not ... read more

Although I was planning on staying in Kandy for only a day or two, I didn't leave until the evening of the 28th (three nights)! I guess that's what happens when you meet a good group of people who's company you enjoy! The Pink House guesthouse in Kandy was one of the most social places I had been to since the start of my travels, and I really enjoyed myself for the two days I spent around the table in their garden! Everyone at the guesthouse had their own travel stories to tell, as well as different plans for the future! We also went around town together to taste some Cothu Roti (the breadlike roti cut into small pieces and mixed with vegetables) and lots of 'rice and curry' - which is ordered just like that ... read more

I arrived home on Saturday 19th November and I am booked to leave the UK again on Sunday 27th November. I had a good few days at home catching up with friends and family and sleep. My sleeping pattern has been strange since I returned. I keep waking at about 06.00 and feeling tired by about 16.00. My pictures have come out fantastic. Seeing them on a 17” computer screen is a real treat. I have been feeling very tired this week. Currently I have absolutely no energy. Maybe it is my body subliminally creating the energy reserves I am likely to need in the next four weeks. As the departure date draws nearer I am feeling very excited about this trip. I think it will be rewarding and adventurous to travel independently for the first ... read more

I never ended up going to the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa - I realised that if I had lived in Edinburgh for three years, and refused to pay the entry fee for the Edinburgh Castle (I DID end up going when my dad got us some free passes :) ), then why would I pay even more to see ruins on my trip to Sri Lanka. When I'm on such a tight budget! I DID however see a few of them on my random walks around town and from the bus - maybe I'll just have to come back one day (it would have been worth it to buy a Circle Ticket which allows you to visit numerous ruins, but the entry price for the single location would have been my budget for many days!). I ... read more

Yesterday I arrived at Colombo Airport! What greeted me, though, was quite unexpected - when I walked out of the airport it looked as though the sky had opened!! The rain was pouring down by the bucketful! Even though the prospect of staying in the airport seemed more inviting than finding my way to some obscure hotel in the center of Colombo, I ended up finding the line for the public bus into the city center and crammed my way into yet another overly-full bus! The bus took me to Fort Train Station, from where a friendly Sri Lankan man showed me the way to the right bus to take me to the area of town where the hotel I had decided to stay at (the YWCA) was located. It was still raining like mad, and ... read more
