What follows is simply a copy and paste job of all the stuff I (or at times Alex) managed to write while in Sri Lanka last Christmas. Sri Lanka Part 1 This is the first chance that I have had to get online since we got here. We are 4 days in to what is so far an amazing trip. Glorious news. We were on an Emirates flight when December 25th kicked in. This meant that the stewardesses took off their already silly hats (they look like they have toilet paper hanging out of them) and replaced them with even more ridiculous rudolf antler hats and wandered around taking pictures of families and saying things like 'Merry Christmas.' The pilot at one point claimed to have seen Santa fly by. This was obviously brilliant. We spent ... read more

We left Days Inn at 8am ready for our long guided journey to Anuradhapura via a Hindu temple, the cave temples of Dambulla and the rock fortress of Sigiriya. The intricately decorated Hindu temple was first; its tower adorned in Hindu deities was a sight to behold. After a couple of hours we reached Dambulla, and after paying our entry our guide left us to climb to the top of the hill and to the temple, after completing the 45 minute stair climb we were quite tired as you could imagine in such heat and humidity so we took a quick breather before exploring the numerous temples which were carved into solid rock over 2000 years ago! Reclining Buddha’s were in every chamber, hundreds of Buddha’s in different poses carved from solid rock were surrounded by ... read more

Boxing Day for me normally means eating left-overs from Christmas (especially ham), relaxing at the batch, looking over and over at the presents, spending time with family, soaking up the NZ sun, enjoying being on holiday, etc, etc. Last year, Murray and I were at Eden Park watching the New Zealand Black Caps play the Sri Lankan Cricket team. After the game had finished news broke of the Tsunami that had hit part of Asia, including Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan cricket team aborted the series, and the daily news showed pictures of the devastation the wave had left. In the days that followed the news reported about missing persons and a creeping death toll, and then stories started flooding in about how people survived the elements. It was an emotional time for the world, as ... read more

We arrived at the Days Inn, greeted by our host, Dan. A Sri Lankan who lives and works in Fort Worth, Texas, but has his home and small businesses in and around Kandy. A warmer welcome we couldn’t have wished for. The accommodation was perched high above the city on a hill, clad in rainforest, filled with monkeys and lots of bugs. Christmas Day!!!!!! Woohoo! We got up and had our breakfast then booked ourselves in for Christmas “Lunch” at the Earls Regency hotel in Kandy. We then gave each other our presents. Charmaine got a gorgeous pair of 18ct White gold and Semi Precious stone earrings and Darren got a piece of material about 4ft wide, and 10ft long, sewn together into a tube at the narrow ends, great! Just kidding, it was a traditional ... read more

We were taken, first thing in the morning to the Tropic Inn proper. After a hearty breakfast of toast and Ceylon tea (well you’ve got to!) we were shown our room. The room was lovely with Aircon, cable TV and wireless internet; it was great, especially for the price. Our first day and we were jet lagged so just a stroll down the beach and up to the main road sufficed. We found a big shop, bought some snacks and two, very tasteful, flashing, Santa hats (for Christmas day of course). That evening we ate in our hotels restaurant, it was nice and very reasonable too. We spent the night calling our families using Skype (best invention since the interweb!). Next day was spent sleeping and being generally confused as our jet lag hit us like ... read more

We arrived after a long and tiring flight at around 4:30pm and were promptly picked up by one of the workers from the hotel, the Tropic Inn. Along with another guest, Dave, we screeched, beeped, swerved and veered our way the 50 or so kilometres from the airport to our accommodation. What’s this? We’re going to be staying in another hotel down the road? Does this remind anyone of our first day in Africa? Being moved from one hotel to another? Well, it’s true, from the hotel with cable TV, WiFi and restaurant to a bog standard one with no facilities. Its OK, it’s only temporary and we were to be moved the following morning, other than that it was a warm (and very humid) welcome to Sri Lanka. ... read more

I'm settling into the work here and finding it very enjoyable and challenging. It's a very dynamic work environment, which is the nature of the work. The team here has grown from nothing to over 400 Tsunami staff nationwide over the last 12 months, and new staff seem to start almost daily. I'm managing the infrastructure reconstruction projects in the South, which includes everything from shops/marketplaces, schools, hospitals, homes, water supply and wastewater systems. The Southern Region extends from Kalutara (2 hours drive west of Galle), to about 3-4 hours drive, and head office in Colombo is about 3-4 hours away, so I spend a lot of time traveling. We are basically rebuilding whole towns in some places where they have been wiped out. Building infrastructure takes time, with planning, consultation, design, obtaining permits, engaging construction ... read more

This is a hugely belated blog posting, but Sri Lanka is definitely a blog-worthy country. There's been a lot of news circulating for such a small country as of late. Last year it was the tsunami and this year it's on the verge of civil war, but even through the turmoil it is an enchanting country. The people have such a strong spirit. Spirit that keeps a person optimistic after his wife's legs are lost in the tsunami along with two of his children and nearly all of his teeth. He was a fisherman who also lost his boat, which was his livelihood, not to mention his home. The most sobering thing about this story is that it is not one that is unique, many people have stories very much like this, virtually everyone I met ... read more

There has been some concern from New Zealand that Murray and I are doing no work! :) Let me enlighten you. I haven’t got round to hiring a house help, which means the house work is not getting done as often as it should be. Hand watering the plants, sweeping & mopping the floor, washing the clothes, ironing, dishes, boiling water for the filter, Supermarket shopping, fruit & vegetable market shopping, cleaning 3 bathrooms & bedrooms, etc etc blah blah (you asked!). Paying bills is done at the bank, which is always interesting as the forms are in Persian script, and I still haven’t worked out which is the back of the “line that never ends”. Normally the man with the shot gun helps me out, a pretty good friend to have really. It is hot ... read more

I had chosen Ella as a stop because of the fantastic scenery. Most guesthouses a traveler could stay in provide wonderful views of dramatic, jutting green hills and the village looks past the imposing Ella Rock. The village itself is very quaint and described in the guidebook as the closest place in Sri Lanka to an English country village. The Ambiente guest house is on the west side of the village away from the majority of accommodation, which is to the south. It looks out on to Ella Gap and Little Rawana Ella Falls and my 1st sight from the balcony leading out from my room was the most spectacular I have ever seen in my life I arrived soon after Lunch and I had not eaten so I ordered some food and a Beer and ... read more
