Although half way across the world, getting here wasn't all that traumatic. There was some confusion over how I managed to check into my London flight at Aberdeen airport (and thus whether or not my luggage would be transfered through) but I was just happy not to have missed the flight. The London to Colombo (via the Maldives) flight was alright, generously paid for by the 'Wood Family Trust'. 10 hours without air conditioning sitting beside a guy with a tendancy to cough all over me wasn't so good, but this was redeemed with all the free food and drink, not to mention SEATBACK TV's (!). Although after watching 'Kung Fu Panda' 3 or so times in a row I challenge anyone not to find Jack Blacks voice a little grating... I'm spending the rest of ... read more

Trip to Colombo: July 6-12, 2008 Transit to Singapore via Singapore Airlines on July 6. One night stay in hotel in Singapore. July 7 - my trip going to Colombo. Philippines is 2 and half hours ahead of Sri Lanka time. DAY 1 IN SRI LANKA The hotel transportation picked me up in the airport. On the way, I have observed that Colombo is just like one of the Philippines provinces. The roads, the houses, the train, buildings and the people make me feel am back on the 70s. On the other hand, it’s nice to see men and women walking in the streets wearing their traditional dress (sari for the women) on different colors. I feel am in a déjà vu seeing some Filipino women wearing Maria Clara in the Philippine streets. That’s what’s nice ... read more

All of a sudden it's the BIG day! and as expected Helen and David do a fine job of getting married serenely in Sri Lankan splendour. Held in an elegant church with a fantastic choir the ceremony is lovely and afterwards we all enjoy celebrating in the grounds of the church. The jazz band gets everyone dancing and we enjoy a buffet banquet fit for a king and queen! I think it's today over G and T's with Vaughan that I decide I should move to Sri Lanka and get a job out here, or at least change my flight and extend my holiday... Congratulations to Helen and David and good luck for Zambia! xx ... read more

I can't believe how quick my time in India has gone! I feel a moment of sadness when the custom's guy stamps my passport. That's it I've left India and all my new friends behind me :( Then it's quickly replaced by excitement - I'm on plane back to beautiful Sri Lanka, somewhere I've already been lucky enough to visit once and this time I'm here to see Helen for her wedding. No one else seems to be getting off the plane in Sri Lanka, they're all in transit on to London. I get to baggage reclaim and sure enough on the last baggage carousel my lonely backpack creaks slowly round and round. I pick up my bag and head through customs half expecting to have that usual sinking feeling when I realise there is no ... read more

Nothing can bring so much joy other than landing during the season of monsoon. At this time of the year the heavy downpour sweeps away this tinny little island mercilessly. The unlawful wind makes tall coconut trees to bend all the directions. They are out of control. They have to obey the wind or break in half. The tarmac of the landing zone is puddled with little potholes. As we slowly came down above Mannar beach, we were welcome by the heavy rain and the wind. We shook ourselves as we accepted the might of the nature. Finally the pilot announced that we were ready to land. He asked us to grab the seat handles, to use the seatbelts and stay as calm as possible. I could see that most passengers on board were expressing fear ... read more

Ins Terminal kommt sowieso nur wer ... read more

March 8, 2008 COLOMBO, SRI LANKA After a late night arrival in Colombo, Sri Lanka ( “Ceylon” for us old guys ), we started our day after lunch with a drive to Kandy, Sri Lanka. On the way we stopped at an elephant orphanage that was set up to rescue orphaned or injured elephants. Now the facility has about 80 elephants of various ages up to over 60 years old. Some are babies and some have been abandoned by the herd or injured by land mines in the north of Sri Lanka. The resident herd is also producing more offspring and adding to their numbers. The land mine issue is a result of the 24 year struggle with the Tamils ( originally from India ) who are living in the north of Sri Lanka and want ... read more

Hello, My third week in Sri Lanka seems to have gone very quickly! Last Sunday we took a long train journey through the beautiful Hill Country, arriving in Bandarawela - 7 hours by train but the fantastic views made it seem shorter. In the evening we went round to the house of a local family (friends of our tour guide) for some traditional Sri Lankan cooking (my contriubtion was chopping a few spring onions!). They gave us tips on managing the traditional eating with our hands (we all went straight back to cutlery the next night!). We then had a fabulous two days walking in the mountains (about 30km split over two days), walking through remote tea plantations and villages. From schoolchildren to tea-pluckers, everyone was posing for photographs and curious to see their digital image ... read more

Size of country 277 miles long 140 miles across at its widest point - land area about same as Ireland - 20 million pop I have to say that SL is beautiful and has everything - however there is a war going on between the government and the Tamil Tigers. There was a load of security in the centre of Colombo and whilst we were there, there were repeated bombings. However we have had a great time and not least because there are loads of elephants and the Sri Lankans stuffed an elephant called "Tusker" and made it a national treasure on show next to the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy!! We started off at the Elephant Orphanage - 60 odd elephants - happy lives - their daily schedule is - get fed - play ... read more
