Hi Everybody! If I ever take a trip like this again, I am not going to arrive or depart an airport after dark. It is frightening to go into an unknown place and especially at night. On our flight, there was one Caucasian lady. We approached her when the plane landed and asked her a couple of questions. She worked for the Asia Foundation, a human rights organization. We were thankful for her help and advice. We were able to locate a kiosk run by our hotel, the Colombo Hilton. They got us a taxi and we felt safe leaving in it. We had to ride approximately 40 minutes to the hotel. We were stopped numerous times by the military police. The driver would turn on the inside light, the police would shine a light on ... read more

Phew, I've finally left Unawatuna. That place really sucks you in, and just doesn't spit you out. I ended up staying in that crazy room for over a week. But seeing as it took the owner 5 years before he decided it was time to see the rest of Sri Lanka, I reckon I did quite well leaving when I did. Thankfully now I'm on my way to Kandy, the capital of the hill country, to see a man about a dog (a woman about a job) thus avoiding staying in Unawatuna for my entire trip... This week has gone really fast and it feels like loads has happened. It hasn't really. But the pace of life there is so slow drinking an Arak with sprite feels like an accomplishment. So yeah, I've been accomplishing a ... read more

Serendipity in Sri Lanka (2004)-Part I This is not a thesis about Serendipity in Physics, Chemistry or Biology or any other science, but a blog about how I found THE star sapphire in Sri Lanka, which I was searching for in Nepal. Please refer to my blog Kathmandu Nostalgia, and my misconceptions about the ‘Polarization Effect In Star Sapphire”. Well, I owed it to Bunny. I had to buy a star sapphire for her now (And, of course for Bambi also) or bust, and I DID go bust in buying the start sapphire, believe me. We went to Sri Lanka just before the Tsunami of 26 Dec. 2004. (And that is why the tsunami affected us more than it normally would have done. We could picture exactly the sports stadium in Galle as well as ... read more

We've been in Colombo for a week now and yesterday was the first time we went to see the ocean. While Colombo runs along the coast for about 15Km, it isn't really a "beach" town. Imagine all of Daytona Beach, right on the water, but not being able to go in the water. I was suprised at the turbulence of the water. The waves were enormous and breaking far from the shore. The sand is orange colored and grainy. At sunset, the colors reminded me of sepia photographs. We wandered around the grounds of the Mt. Lavina Hotel. They have a pool area set high above the water with a sweeping view of the coastline of Colombo up to the north where you can see the twin towers of Colombos own World Trade Centre. Occasionally, a ... read more

So, our adventures have led us to Sri Lanka. Adam and I arrived in Colombo after 32+ hours of travel. We left from Atlanta, GA on Friday night, Aug. 25 and arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday night, Aug. 27. Amazingly, it was not too bad, despite the fact that I badly injured my pinky toe while packing the night before we left Atlanta. I'm pretty sure I broke something since it is sticking out the wrong way, bruised and swollen nearly 5 days later. I even got wheelchair assistance in Hong Kong. Another wheelchair was requested for arrival in Sri Lanka, but after getting off the plane, it looked easier to just limp my way out instead of wait for someone to come wheel me to a lift somewhere, just to go up half a ... read more

hello all! I have had the most manic 10 days of my life! So much has happened and when I am trying to put it in words for you now it sounds pathetic how worked up I have been! So last time I spoke to you I was on my way to see an amazing temple then I went to see the massive buddest festival in Kandy which was so beautiful it was about 4 hours long (will wouldn’t have hated it!) there were over 50 elephants in it all lit up and hundreds of dancers. The next day I went to an elephant orphanage and then on to do an elephant ride which most of us came away itching from! Finally a week after I arrived my bag turned up it had been stuck at ... read more

From Brunei, we went back to KL airport, where we stayed overnight in an airport hotel (we just couldn't bring ourselves to sleep on the airport lounges..), and then flew to Colombo, Sri Lanka. We stayed with my uncle (mom's brother), aunty and grandmother, in the house my mother grew up in, and where we have spent most of our childhood summer holidays in... Sri Lanka is amazing... if I do say so myself. A tropical paradise in the true sense of the word... shame about the civil war huh? We had an amazing time there...... read more

Well after missing our express train from Kandy to Colombo, and then standing on the platform watching the next train go past in slow motion as we didn't think it was our train, we eventually managed to jump on a bus... Oh the joys, to be fair the bus was air conditioned and pretty clean but the music was shattering on delicate ears... A few hours later and we're dumped off at the bus station in Colombo so after a few taxi driver haggles later we’re hurtling down Galle road to South Colombo and the Mount Lavinia Hotel for our last night in Sri Lanka. Wow - we arrive and it's pretty posh, I don’t see too many backpacks put it that way. Our room matches the rest of the hotel and we're not disappointed as ... read more

After leaving paradise behind we certainly landed with a bang - the flight back to Chennai was pretty uneventful but unfortunately we had to waste about 8 hours at the airport before our next flight - oh the joys of travel. We've been using the airport business lounges where possible but unfortunately we weren't allowed to check in to the international airport 8 hours early so we had to go mad in the Indian heat one more time. Anyway we eventually made it to our flight and to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. And guess what - it was New Years night - again, that’s 4 New Years in 4 months, and of course alcohol is banned on New Years - don’t ask... As on our previous few trips we've really been leaving it to ... read more
