All good things come to an end……… Well we are home safe and sound - no thefts or loss of our valuables and no need to claim on the health insurance. Heathrow was raining and a heavy grey sky when we landed. I had a definite feeling of “where can I get a ticket out of here”. However we were met by Dan and his girlfriend Manuela which was great and they drove us all the way home- then we saw friends the same evening and had more champagne in one day then the whole of the 10 months we have been away - next day to see more family and finally felt as though we were back. Then more friends welcomed us back. We are very lucky indeed and especially with our family. The Welcome ... read more

Well this will be the last blog from the US - we have driven down to Williamsburg from Richmond - only an hour or so and into yet another part of the American personality. We then flew to Miami from Washington DC. Altogether we have driven about 5000 miles in the US and flown about 10000 miles including Hawaii. Bizarrely the blog is getting harder to write even though every day is filled with different incidents and memorably sights and insights. I think we are running out of superlatives. We have had a really interesting time including only the second jaw dropping moment of our trip caused by a man made wonder.(Read on and you’ll find out what it was!) Hopefully our understanding of the USA has moved along as well. There are many different currents ... read more

We’ve been travelling around a lot in the last couple of weeks so just got the time to update y’all on what we have been up to. Apart from Boston (where the people are really up themselves) we have had a really positive experience of the US - like totally yeah! We are both thinking in American. So much has been happening that we’ll just give you a flavour of what is happening out here. (By the way Live free or Die is the motto of New Hampshire) The big issues are the same as in the UK - petrol costs (up past $4 a gallon but today we paid $3.65 say £1.90 a gallon), house prices (down by up to 24%), and the Obama/McCain contest. On petrol - cars out here are advertised boasting that ... read more

Yi Haa!! Currently sat out west near the Grand Canyon having just gone through really fantastic Wild West scenery which takes me back to being a little boy playing Cowboys and Indians. Tonight we are staying in a western heritage hotel where lots of film stars stayed when making westerns - John Wayne, Burl Ives, Tom Mix and his horse Tony. The sceney here is just fantastic and every crest we drive over there is yet another great vista and we look out to see if we can see smoke signals and the Indians. It is particularly odd as we have just ha four days in Las Vegas - not a place we would normally visit - I suppose that is one of the differences betwen travelling and going on holiday. Usually we would only go ... read more

So, we continued along the eastern coast of Australia back to Sydney - calling in to the Hunter Valley for more wine tasting on the way. We didn’t call back to Fredos Pie Shop for more pies. Blue skies, sunny deserted beaches and chilly at night in the campervan. Its a good job we got the larger van - even so it is still a squeeze - just to give a feel of the size, the living space would fit into our kitchen 6 times!!! Australia continued to serve up a surprise everyday - whether Little Bay which is the perfect beach so far - Newcastle NSW which was so beautiful and clean with road directions to Wickham, Hexham, Lambton and even Wallsend - the day we got lost and ended up with a panoramic ... read more

Flew Bali - Singapore and spent nearly 24 hours stopover ( we watched 3 films in the private lounge and slept on the spa treatment rooms - but v boring to the extent that Carol was induced to buy a bottle of mango flavoured vodka!!) - then flew Singapore Brisbane (heavy rain) then connecting flight to Cairns - a weird way to go and taking 2 days but arrived safe and well in Australia at last. We then went straight to a campervan hire place and drove off up the coast to Far North Queensland within an hour of landing. All of our preconceptions have been blown away - Aussies polite and have a great and justifiable pride in their country and a desire to keep it clean and organised. Everyone is really helpful. The only ... read more

Well we left you as we were about to set off for the Gili Islands (actually Gili in Balinese means little island) and we were a bit apprehensive. However we had an early start with a taxi, then bus, then a ship that looked as though it was from the Flying Dutchman and finally donkey cart arriving about 9pm having travelled for 13 hours. The journey into Gili was magical with the boat puttering along and an almost full moon shining on the water with dolphins and fish glittering in the balmy breeze. A much smaller boat came alongside to take us off and we landed on the beach itself. A donkey cart took us along sandy lanes which were shining in the moonlight (no street lights). We stayed at the cheapest place so far- no ... read more

Well we made it out of Borneo and to Singapore and then onto beautiful Bali which is the highlight for us so far. (Pics will follow - the connection we have isn't fast enough to load them up) Singapore was another surprise - intensely modern, really a western city and if the future is a completely consumer society then this is that future. The taxi driver that took us from Kota Johor airport in Malaysia (cheaper to use than Singapore’s Changi Airport) told us that if you don’t have money in Singapore no one will speak to you. Whilst a bit blunt it is pretty true. Yet Singapore is super clean, organised, works very well, is expensive but compared to Asia is streets ahead. The museums there are great as well particularly the Museum of South ... read more
