Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il. To be updated

My school yard is full of falling Autumn. A lot of leaves of trees turned greenery to colorful-yellow, brown, red-. I shot yellowed leaves and beautiful flowers in my school back yard and caught my some pupils with living in playground. You can enjoy these shoots. Leaves are falling, falling like falling snows, This fall is falling, falling with colored falling leaves. 同李十一醉 憶元九 白樂天 花時同醉破春愁 醉折花枝作 [View Full Entry]

Hello everybody! I know that it’s been a while, but here I am. So, these last few weeks have been pretty busy. Two weeks ago was mom week, meaning that moms had the option to sit in on our classes. This made me more than a little nervous, but I think it went pretty well. The same week as mom week was when Matt and Mark came to visit. It was really nice seeing some familiar faces out here. I guess you can say that them being here helped energize my batteries, and I think that I did a pretty good [View Full Entry]

Wow! What a week. To tell the truth I really don’t know where to start. I might start with my apartment. I’m really lucky as my apartment is quite big compared to what a lot of the different English schools provide their teachers. You see the schools generally supply the apartment as part of the contract so it is generally a small studio apartment that you are given. However, we are very lucky at our school as all of the teachers have a decent sized apartment. My apartment has three rooms that could be used as bedrooms. The one I uses [View Full Entry]

The wine train is something Jess' mom told her about right after she arrived. Unfortunately in the madness that is jetlag she completely forgot about it until a friend reminded her, mentioning it would be a fun trip. That was in August. It took a while to get everything together, and it took some doing to make it work, but on Halloween, a group of 9 of us got together and finally made the journey. It meant having to start very early in the morning (catching a bus from our town at 7am!) as the train left Seoul station at 9, [View Full Entry]

Week 9 and 10 Asia » South Korea » Gwangju
So... week 9 and 10 were kind of eventful! week 9 we headed to the Kimchi festival. Kimchi is a huge part of Korean culture.. They eat Kimchi at every meal... Fomented cabbage which is super spicy.. not a fan but I decided I might as well try it while in Korea. Friends came down from another city in Korea and we all went out to party that night. It was a great night! My children were getting better until they threw me a curve ball and added 4 new students into my 5 year old class who don't speak English [View Full Entry]

After Chusok weekend ended life switched from a nice even 80km/h pace to 250km/h on an autobahn in a country that didn’t seem like South Korea, it was a chaotic whirlwind but unforgettable none the less. The remaining four weeks that I had were filled with exam writing stress, mad school stress coupled with the need and desire to attend every Hash and every party that was on the cards. It really is true that it takes a year to settle into a place and from then on things get really awesome, this was most certainly the case for me! Coupled [View Full Entry]

My crazy-packed end-of-October weekend started off with an early trip to the Dongbu Intercity Bus Terminal in Daejeon Saturday morning. Since our first tour (Chungju) with Adventure Korea left from Seoul, it didn't make sense to meet them in Seoul first thing Saturday as the city of Chungju was closer to Daejeon. It took 1.5hrs to get to Chungju from Daejeon. Chungju is a city in North Chungcheong province, South Korea. Its flower is the Chrysanthemum, its bird is the Mandarin Duck, and its tree is the Apple Tree. Did you know? Chungju is famous for its production of apples. The [View Full Entry]

Halloween off the eastern coast of South Korea This turned out to be a Halloween I will never forget. Because I was currently living aboard a ship, my roommate and I tried to have some fun with the other people who were there as well. Since we had lots of candy, a pot of freshly brewed coffee, and several grilled cheese sandwiches (these are delicacies on ship) we told our guys to come up to our stateroom and neither dress up in a Halloween costume or provide us with some sort of entertainment. In doing so, we would allow them access [View Full Entry]

It's windy out!

October has been an exciting month for us here, and it only got better when we found out my parents were coming for a visit!! They arrived in Yangsan on Wed. Oct. 21 and left the following Monday, and in that short time, we let them experience as much of the Korean culture as possible. They had a great trip and loved Korea :) Love Motels Yangsan is a small city by Korean standards (about 400,000 maybe?) and so there are no hotels in the city, only motels and we were lucky because a new one had recently opened down the [View Full Entry]
