Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il. To be updated

This weekend was much more relaxing then the past weekend. Saturday Jessica and I decided to hike up Mt Gubongsan. The mountain was out in a suburb area of Daejeon. This meant that we had to venture on to the bus for the first time ever. We were very unsure of what to do or how to pay but thankfully it was very easy. The bus driver also helped us with where we had to get off in order to get to the mountain. It is a gorgeous hike. You are right in the trees and it is not as commercialized [View Full Entry]

This is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada so it wouldn be right not to acknowledge it! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at home. I would do bad, bad things for some roast turkey and moms stuffing right about now :) Some things that I am thankful for include but of course are not limited to: - family that loves me and friends that miss me (i am surprised, too!) - my healthy, wonderful body - tom pettys "free fallin\" - I was always grateful for this but now I will be even MORE grateful upon my return to Canada: drinkable tap water - [View Full Entry]

Beachy Busan Asia » South Korea » Busan
Busan. Beautiful beachy bustling-with-activity Busan. Or, as it has previously been called, Pusan. Our Chuseok Busan adventure began with an early 3.5hr Mugunghwa train ride. As we were chugging along towards the southeast coast of South Korea at 6:20am Friday morning, Chantelle and I were pretty much out of it. Since we both only got a couple hours of sleep the night before, we attempted to catch some shut-eye on the train despite the rising bright sun, stuffiness, and yes, a freakin lady standing RIGHT in front of us, creating an unsightly view of her derriere. Chantelle dared me to take [View Full Entry]

Hello folks! First off, we would like to wish a big Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends and family celebrating back home this weekend! We will certainly be thinking of you this weekend and the delicious turkey we will be missing! Now, here in Korea, last weekend was their version of Thanksgiving, better known as Chuseok, or Harvest festival (it occurs on the full moon of the 8th lunar cycle). We decided to take advantage of a 4-day weekend and boarded the Soul train for a few days of exploration in the booming metropolis boasting [View Full Entry]

"Good bye!! We love you, Korea!" I’m going to interrupt just before the last of the Blog-abrations to let you know what we’ve been up to lately. Lots have been going on, plus a week in Japan, so for the last installments of Blog-abration, I know you’re all on the edge of your seats, please stay tuned… One last going away party, if you can call it that, was two days spent in Suwon, with a couple of our favorite ‘peeps’ (as Reagan would say) Reagan and Leandra. With the hanus traffic during the Korean Chusok (Korean Thanksgiving) holiday, it works [View Full Entry]

"Teacher, it's go to the home time."
Our Gangnam Apt. friends after driving us and all our stuff to the bus terminal

That's right, after six weeks in Korea we're finally making some money!! Its been a bit tight around here lately since we had to wait so long before our first pay check, but we've made do with plenty of budget adventures and meals (and one not so budget adventure... more to come on that). We're celebrating our first payday tonight by going to the make-it-yourself spring roll restaurant, our favorite place to eat so far in South Korea. Everyone says the first month is the hardest and we hope that's true. We're feeling more settled into the teaching life here and [View Full Entry]

Yesterday was a blur. I have been awake, but asleep or like a robot. It has been a mad rush to get information. Information about India, information about Gyeongju, Samcheok, and Palgong Mountain… On Tuesday I rocked it at school and then around lunch time my friends came. We walked around and saw some of the students. We told them that we were going to have a free talk time. A group of about 15 students came to talk… 3 first years and about 12 second years. It was awesome. I was so impressed with the students. Then we took a [View Full Entry]

The alarm went off at 4:30am as we decided on our last day we would take the hour drive out to Sunrise Peak and watch the sun come up. We went down the the lobby to check out the weather before we made the drive and it said Windy each hour so we decided to go since no rain or clouds were in the hour by hour forecast. As we got on the scooter the forecast was correct it was WINDY!!! We made it out to Sunrise Peak in record time of 50 minutes and got there around 5:50am. The sun [View Full Entry]

We woke up around 9:15am Tuesday morning and met Emma at 10am in the lobby of the hotel to get some breakfast, since she works 12:30-8pm on Tuesday, where did we go??? Dunkin Donuts... we loved the bagel breakfast sandwich with cheese, egg and bacon and some donuts of course. The Asian breakfast of noodles or rice is not our thing. After breakfast we got on the road around 11:30 and headed west to see the other half of the island today. We drove for about an hour to the other side and took the scenic shore road through the small [View Full Entry]

Jeju Trip...  Asia » South Korea » Jeju
I want to blog as much of this as I can before it jumbles up in my mind and becomes some huge blobby memory that is only made slightly clearer when I look at the pictures that were taken… This weekend, a magical four day weekend, ushered us off to the island of Jeju. I did as much prep work as I could muster. This was Chuseok weekend, which meant that businesses would be closed, at least, on Saturday. Also, the days preceding and following were mass travel days, so tickets were scarce. On Tuesday, with the help of my co-teacher [View Full Entry]
