Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il. To be updated

Camp Mu Juk, South Korea Asia » South Korea
Camp Mu Juk, South Korea Work has taken me to Camp Mu Juk located in Pohang, South Korea. There isn't much to do on this base except browse the small PX and grab some food in the ROK Hard Cafe. Last night it was exceptionally cold (36 degrees) and I was actually sleeping on a beach. Thankfully I had my down sleeping bag with me. Some other folks in my group didn't bother to bring cold weather gear ashore with them and they sure were miserable. Right before going to bed, a huge bonfire was made and the group I was [View Full Entry]

So there is a saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." The saying for SoKo needs to be revised a bit, "It takes a village to get a student into university." It turns out my on-line applications to university were a piece of cake compared to the shinanigans that my students are expriencing. Absolute insanity. My students have had to compile endless amount of documents, take tests, travel to the universities for interviews and tests, fork up obscene amounts of money, and enlist the help of parents and teachers. Many of the teachers have been busy going over applications [View Full Entry]

One more thing... Asia » South Korea » Busan
From Mom and Dad: Just a couple things that I didn’t mention on our take on Korea. Firstly, on our visit to the worlds largest department store . I’m not sure about all you other guys, but when I go to a mall, all of a sudden my knees start to hurt, which they normally don’t. Maybe it’s a sign. Picture this place the size of a Sears, but each floor is dedicated to a specific department. There are 14 floors. Granted the top 3 are a golf driving range. Still this place was huge. My knees were really acting up. [View Full Entry]

This is not appropriate for many... so I'm sorry but it was an experience and I was told that I must document every experience.... I however did not know the story before I went just that we were going on an adventure and an adventure it was....When we got there and started walking I quickly learned this was NOT a NORMAL PARK! Boys and girls, gather around. I want to share the story of the young Sinnam virgin. A long time ago, in a fishing village far, far away, a young virgin set out to collect seaweed. Her beloved fiance took [View Full Entry]

My school yard is full of falling Autumn. A lot of leaves of trees turned greenery to colorful-yellow, brown, red-. I shot yellowed leaves and beautiful flowers in my school back yard and caught my some pupils with living in playground. You can enjoy these shoots. Leaves are falling, falling like falling snows, This fall is falling, falling with colored falling leaves. 同李十一醉 憶元九 白樂天 花時同醉破春愁 醉折花枝作 [View Full Entry]

Hello everybody! I know that it’s been a while, but here I am. So, these last few weeks have been pretty busy. Two weeks ago was mom week, meaning that moms had the option to sit in on our classes. This made me more than a little nervous, but I think it went pretty well. The same week as mom week was when Matt and Mark came to visit. It was really nice seeing some familiar faces out here. I guess you can say that them being here helped energize my batteries, and I think that I did a pretty good [View Full Entry]

Wow! What a week. To tell the truth I really don’t know where to start. I might start with my apartment. I’m really lucky as my apartment is quite big compared to what a lot of the different English schools provide their teachers. You see the schools generally supply the apartment as part of the contract so it is generally a small studio apartment that you are given. However, we are very lucky at our school as all of the teachers have a decent sized apartment. My apartment has three rooms that could be used as bedrooms. The one I uses [View Full Entry]

The wine train is something Jess' mom told her about right after she arrived. Unfortunately in the madness that is jetlag she completely forgot about it until a friend reminded her, mentioning it would be a fun trip. That was in August. It took a while to get everything together, and it took some doing to make it work, but on Halloween, a group of 9 of us got together and finally made the journey. It meant having to start very early in the morning (catching a bus from our town at 7am!) as the train left Seoul station at 9, [View Full Entry]

Week 9 and 10 Asia » South Korea » Gwangju
So... week 9 and 10 were kind of eventful! week 9 we headed to the Kimchi festival. Kimchi is a huge part of Korean culture.. They eat Kimchi at every meal... Fomented cabbage which is super spicy.. not a fan but I decided I might as well try it while in Korea. Friends came down from another city in Korea and we all went out to party that night. It was a great night! My children were getting better until they threw me a curve ball and added 4 new students into my 5 year old class who don't speak English [View Full Entry]

After Chusok weekend ended life switched from a nice even 80km/h pace to 250km/h on an autobahn in a country that didn’t seem like South Korea, it was a chaotic whirlwind but unforgettable none the less. The remaining four weeks that I had were filled with exam writing stress, mad school stress coupled with the need and desire to attend every Hash and every party that was on the cards. It really is true that it takes a year to settle into a place and from then on things get really awesome, this was most certainly the case for me! Coupled [View Full Entry]
