Malaysia & Singapore: Just a Taste After diving in the Similan Islands we were hooked, and we hoped for another opportunity to dip our fins in this part of the world. Our plan for the rest of the trip included visiting Malaysia and Singapore, then jetting to Bali to indulge in resort living sponsored by Aaron’s parents, a gift for our honeymoon. Throughout our travels, Aaron had been in touch with a friend from university who, with his girlfriend, had been working as a dive master in Indonesia. We told them we were coming with hopes to connect. Scotty and Val who had been working on a remote island an hour’s flight from Bali were about to embark on their final live aboard of the season. They encouraged us to join them and said that it ... read more

Hello all, I left Chaing Mai on Sunday morning and took the train to Bangkok, this was a 12 hour journey but went quite quickly. I stayed in Bangkok on Sunday night then went to get my flight to Singapore on the Monday. It was almost dark when I arrived so I didn't see much of the city. Yesterday I walked around for a while then decided to get a tour bus to see the city, I stopped off at the botanical gardens on the way round. The hostel I'm staying at is really nice it's called pillows and toast and is in a great location. It's so much more expensive here compared to Thailand which is taking a bit of getting used to. It's as bad as home!!! Today I spent the whole day shopping ... read more

Seasons Greetings to one and all!! So, the last 10 days have been spent in Malaysia and we've loved every second! We spent a week on the island of Langkawi (off the west coast of Malaysia) and then headed down to Kuala Lumpur. As some of you will know I haven't been very well, it's probably easier to say what wasn't wrong with me rather than what was, but I've put my symptoms down to exhaustion and poor diet (Mat and I are very much over the whole rice and noodle thing!) We've travelled for over three months and the longest we've stayed in one place is four days. It's my own doing because I want to do everything, meet everyone and go everywhere and my body just needed to stop for a while! So Mat ... read more

We left the UK on 6th November - Manchester to Heathrow, Heathrow to Singapore with Qantas 747 ! Business Class is like a top restaurant in the air, unlimited champagne, exquisite food with real cutlery and a great service. What a way to fly....however by the evening things had taken a sinister twist and it was more like an asylum in the air with passengers (inmates ?) shuffling about in Qantas pyjama's and flight socks (oh, the glamour !), staring at silent screens, laughing to themselves and waiting for their next meal ! By morning normal service resumed and we landed in Singapore after a 12 hour flight feeling refreshed and relaxed. Checked into our hotel, the Hotel Miramar is very convenient for the local bars and restaurants at Robinson Quay and Clarke Quay. Decided to ... read more

TRISHAW AND SPITTY BUM Okay so the evening started with Siobhan and not feeling so well. The poor little things had bad gastro, which had started on the plane.( No vomiting just the other end.) plus the heat made her feel like crap. But the little trooper wanted to keep going. We went to a traditional chinese Tea in little china town, in which Siobhan then vomited and proceded to nearly passout on us. But would not go home we gave her chicken and corn soup and she told us she felt much better after been sick. We then went on the Trishaw ride through Singapore and it was great worth the wait and then a bum boat ride. (love the harbour). We have worked out Singapore is much hotter and humid at night. Last I checked, I was still a native Floridian. If yesterday was any indication, however, I might possibly be mistaken. It's amazing what a year of living in an alpine town with no heating in your house will do to thicken your blood. Just stepping off the plane in Singapore and feeling the blast of 95-degree 100%-humidity filled air was a jolt to the senses. Walking around in it was like being microwaved alive. Seriously, we drank more water and juice yesterday than in the past month combined, and I still felt like I was going to pass out for most of the day. We've each taken four showers since we've been here. Jeremy is handling the heat better than me, but he's fairly melting himself. As you all know, I went to Chinatown today. It was really amazing! I actually prefered it to Little India, but it's a close one. They have just had their Mid-Autumn Moon festival (or something along those lines...) Anyway the whole street was decorated - much like Little India - but my cab driver said it is always decorated for the different festivals and celebrations which is pretty cool! So when I got there I found a street off the main road, with loads of shops and market stalls selling everything you could imagine really, souveniers, gifts, chinese dresses, (not sure what they're called) cameras, jewellery, all that stuff... and at the end of the street was a temple - it was incredible! Almost like a work of art (I got loads of pictures) and inside ... read more

Introduction to Singapore Even though I was complete exhausted I only got about 4 hours of sleep. The time change definitely messes with your head. I woke up at 6am and there was no hope of returning to my much needed slumber. Instead I got ready for the day and left for work. My apartment is in China Town near the downtown area of Singapore on Club Street. This area is full of bars and nightlife and I'm excited to see what it has to offer in the next two weeks. The MRT is their very cool and seemingly efficient public transit system. It is easy to figure out and everything is, of course, in English. I've been told that Singapore is the softest introduction you can have to Asia. Now I know why. For lunch ... read more

After a 12 hour flight, lots of movies, 3 meals, 2 beers each and very little sleep we arrive in Singapore airport (in Jim‘s case one year older!). We then went in search of our hostel. We successfully negotiated the MRT (tube) and after a 30 minute walk in the scorching Singapore sun we arrive at our hostel, Fernloft Chinatown. But it isn’t our hostel and we aren’t in Chinatown. We’ve arrived at the wrong branch, there are 3 Fernloft hostels and we arrived at the wrong one! They took pity on our sleep deprived and dishevelled state and allowed us to spend the night, even buying Jim a birthday cake, which we didn‘t realise was made with ice-cream until we had been walking around with it for about an hour, but it was still delicious. ... read more

We made it and all well if not a little jet lagged. The flight was very good and service was excellent which made the 12 hours fly by. We arrived at 7.30am Friday morning. The hotel is clean but dated and the staff are very friendly, can't do enough for you. In fact they have already upgraded our rooms to two deluxe adjoining rooms. All the important things like Internet, Big bed, Tv, hudge walk in shower and the most important Air con. We have had time to get a kip and then jump on a bus tour round the city to find our bearings. The best way to describe it is like an ants nest, hundreds of thousands of people on an island not much bigger than the Isle of Wight. Its now 6pm and ... read more
