Dalupiri Island, Samar
Published: March 28th 2013Asia » Philippines » Samar » Calbayog » Dalupiri IslandA tough day of travelling from Gubat. Tried to catch a Jeepney going back to Sorsogon, but impossible as too many people going home for Holy Week. As soon as a Jeepney arrived it filled up with 20 passengers in a few seconds! So we headed South on an empty Jeepney to Bulusan, which passed through some great scenery. Then another Jeepney to Irosin then another to Matnog for the ferry to Samar. Ferry trip was crazy, wuth hundreds of passengers on board. Arriving in Samar we stayed overnight just outside the Port of Allen in a place called Paradise Inn then up early next day at 5:30am and Jeepney to small town of Victoria and caught a banca to the Island of Dalupiri. All the effort was worth it, as lovely little Island with lots ... read more
Where to go after traveling the usual suspects? Here are some new ideas I came up with surfing the net while recovering from a Monday night drinking binge today. 1. Samar and Leyte in the Eastern Visayas, Philippines. Why: I could use a Red Horse* beer. The general idea: Buy a motorbike, tricycle or a Filipino style used jeepney that says "Jesus is with me" on the sides and "Guns'n'Roses" on the front and tour these relatively little known islands. 2. Bangladesh. Why: A detox in muslim country might be welcome. The general idea: See the Sundarbans sanctuary for tigers, well known for the fact that a person (usually a honey collector) is eaten alive by a tiger every third day. The tourists still claim of course that it's hard to catch a glimpse of one. ... read more
I got an early flight to Tacloban this May and my friend Emie was also up early to meet me at DMZ airport in this city. We had a brunch before going to Duptours transportation office to catch the 1p.m. van to Guiuan (Eastern Samar). It was in 2002 (?) I last went for a visit to Homonhon Island (Emie's hometown). And I did not have a digital camera that time yet. Now as I come back for a visit, I'm looking forward to take pictures of this historical place once more. I'm glad that the road to Guiuan is well paved this time. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to reach Guiuan from Tacloban. I did not know what to expect or how the town looks like now. I have kept in touch with ... read more
Ana, survived Siquijor...traversed Bohol and just barely made it through Southern Leyte and Limasawa. Despite a roadblock on the way to Tacloban, she made it in one piece and enjoyed a night on the town. Her relaxing night on the town was short lived however, the race continued the next day into the eastern province of Samar. Ana received instructions in the morning they were as follows: ~~~ ** Welcome to the eastren province of Samar, catch a bus to Basey a quiet town outside of the Sohoton National Park. Once there you will have to choose between a number of guides and bancas to lead you up the Cadacan River's estuary. Your final destination is the natural limestone caverns that lead underground below the park. Once you find this natural wonder, and journey to the ... read more

I'm back in Homonhon Island. I took the land trip again with Lina and her daughter this time. Emie's niece is getting married after the town fiesta. I'm glad to be back. My first stop is Habag town in Homonhon and afterward I'm going to Bitaugan to stay with Emie and her family. I walk around town with Lynie (Lina's daughter) and Liza, her cousin who lives there. I was able to visit Little Habag, a few minutes walk from the plaza (my point of reference; it's where the basketball court is located). We visited Mana Naning and her family. I didin't know there was another "baranggay" in Habag. I was not able to go there before. There are fewer houses here. I was able to talk with Mana Naning and she told me about the ... read more
May is the time of most festivities in the Philippines. "Fiesta". Many people from the cities would usually take time off to attend their town fiestas in the provinces. I went to visit a friend (whose only daughter is also my godchild). My friend Emie's cousin, Lina was also going home to Homonhon Island for the May fiesta. I took the land trip with her, with her son Nathan, and nephew Rigel. We took the Eagle Bus Transport. I almost backed out of the trip because the bus was "fully loaded" on the aisle. Passengers had a lot of things, boxes they put within their seats and on the aisle. And some passenger were arguing with Lina that our seat were theirs. It looked confusing inside the bus. But I thought of my friend and wanting ... read more
