Guiuan Fishery
Net-net, Janeth, Lilah at Guiuan Fishery, Eastern Samar I got an early flight to Tacloban this May and my friend Emie was also up early to meet me at DMZ airport in this city. We had a brunch before going to Duptours transportation office to catch the 1p.m. van to Guiuan (Eastern Samar). It was in 2002 (?) I last went for a visit to Homonhon Island (Emie's hometown). And I did not have a digital camera that time yet. Now as I come back for a visit, I'm looking forward to take pictures of this historical place once more. I'm glad that the road to Guiuan is well paved this time. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to reach Guiuan from Tacloban.
I did not know what to expect or how the town looks like now. I have kept in touch with the friends from Homonhon and they always tell me much have changed in Guiuan (the town where you stop before going to the island). I was looking forward to visit the island of Homonhon. We were not able to go to the island as my host and friend Emie got dizzy the day after we arrive here in Guiuan. The driver of the van
Calicoan Surf Camp
Calicoan Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar that we rode was fast even through a zigzag road. I barfed on the way here. Luckily, Net-net didn't barfed because she was the first one that got motion sickness. Emie has to take a rest.
Net-net and I visited friends (her relatives, actually). We planned to go on a day tour around Guiuan. On my third day, I had lunch with the Gaytos family. Their son, Emman is my godson. I have many "inaanak" (god daughters and godson from Homonhom Island). They are all growing up fast. After lunch, we (Net-net, Janet, Lilah, and I) hired a tricycle for the tour.
Our tour guide was Lilah. First on the list was the Guiuan Fishery. They culture crabs, oysters, abalone, tilapia, here. The Fishery Officer was very accommodating in touring us the place. Then on we go to Calicoan Island. I was able to go here before but I didn't know it was Calicoan. The Calicoan Surf Camp has been written about in the papers and magazines. It's a five star accommodation on this island. The architecture is Balinese type. They have an infinity pool. Spacious resort. Quiet.
We didn't go further to Sulangan as we started

Calicoan Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar late in our day tour. We stopped by Ngolos, where there is a flagpole that stands to commemorate the participation of Guiuanons/Waray during WorldWarII. Here, one can see the cemented patches of land that was used by the Americans for their tankers. As you take a look at the beachside, it is far and wide. One can also see the old asphalt road built by the Americans in the 40s. They had a huge airbase here in Guiuan. This town is historical. We can add to that the island of Homonhon where Magellan first landed here in the Philippines and the Balingasa town where the locals have shown their bravery against foreign oppressors. So much history in our islands.
As Guiuan faces the Pacific Ocean, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) have a radar station here. The low pressure brewing in the Pacific when it turns into tropical storm usually passes by this town. Thank you to the Pag-asa Officer who accommodated us as we visited this station. There is a good view of the town from up here.
After a day's tour, we stopped by Marcelo's (formerly Concordio's) by the waterfront anf have mango
Calicoan Surfers
Calicoan Island, guiaun, Eastern Samar shake and fries. At night, there are barbecue stalls by the plaza. Locals, hang around this place for chitchats, dinner, or just strolling. Or you can go to DJ disco by the waterfront too. It's a basic disco house in a small town, open air, at 35pesos entrance with free softdrink or beer. We were able to catch the first Guiuan Bikini Open held in a resort in Surok the E and L Oasis Resort.
We were not able to go swimming in Surok because they were preparing for the Bikini Open. So we went to Calicoan Island for a swim. We had picnic and it was low tide when we got there. Emie and Mark were looking for crabs and seashells (edible). After the beach we went for a dip in Calicoan Villas pool. It was a
It was my first time to stay this long in Guiuan, because my friends are from Homonhon island so when I arrive here, we usually go the same day to the island. Guiuan is still laidback, and I enjoyed it. Laidback in a sense that people are not in a rush unlike in the city; well, people rush because for
Ngolos Beach
Ngolos, Guiuan, Eastern Samar one it's the traffic they are avoiding. Traffic consumes our time in the city. Clean air. "Pot-pot" the local bicycles are good transportation within the town center.
We went to visit Mana Nelda in Inatunglan Island. An island that is self sustaining with food you can find in its surroundings. It was a hearty lunch Mana Nelda provided. The shells that I used to see made into souvenir items are actually edible. So much for a citygal, I had to take pictures of it to tell my "city friends" about it. I don't drink "tuba" (coconut wine) but the one Mana has was sweet, it tastes more like a juice because it is fresh from the coconut "flower" sap. I may have not the right term for this. Inatunglan Island is about ten minutes from the jetty port near Marcelo's. There is a good view of Tubabao island and one can have a glimpse of Victory Island and Pearl Island from here.
There is more to visit in Guiuan, I have not yet visited the other nearby beaches in Sapao and Dumpao. There is also a Yoga House on the way to Calicoan and Pearl Island.

Tricycle Tour
Guiuan, Eastern Samar is moving forward with new marketplace, terminal construction behind the old market in the town center. I also noticed a new hotel and there is a Mercury drugstore in town. And most of all, everyone is talking about the opening of the Guiuan Airport in October, in time for the town's fiesta.
