Early this morning, Stephen and I headed out to the Philippine domestic airport to fly to Caticlan. From Caticlan, we were shuttled to a boat which motored us to the island of Boracay. Boracay is an island of the Philippines located approximately 315 km (200 miles) south of Manila and 2 km off the northwest tip of Panay Island in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. According to many travel magazines, it was voted by the BMW Tropical Beach Handbook as one of the best beaches in the world and also as the world's number one tropical beach. It's famous for its white sanded beaches. The last time I visited Boracay Island was in 2000 and it has grown and modernized over the past decade. I first noted that the island has become more commercialized ... read more

Well, I don’t think this place still needs an introduction because it is the most popular Philippine destination in the World. Very well-known to Foreign Tourists that even Hollywood Stars visit this so-called Beach Capital of the Philippines and it is BORACAY. I’ve been to Boracay a lot of times during the lean months and I always try Parasailing, Nature Trekking, Jetski, Banana Boating, ATV, Aquanot and their famous Island Hopping. This place is seen by Filipinos as the “Las Vegas” version of the Philippines because it is a Beach filled with lots of Hotels, Restaurants and Bars. And it’s more alive at night than daytime. So people go here because of the all out nightlife party. But… For a Nature lover, Traveller and Adventurer like me? I wouldn’t prefer the nightlife version of BORACAY ... read more

Tricycle, plane, taxi, plane, minibus, boat, tricycle and 10 hours of our time. That sums up our journey from San Jose to Boracay! It's just as well we have six nights here, as we could both do with staying in the same place for a while. Boracay is the playground of the Philippines, and is completely geared towards tourism. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but when you're away for a while it's nice to mix it up a bit! Boracay is one of the few places we've come to that seems to have some kind of town planning and control over development. The long golden beach is pristine. There are steep fines for littering and even smoking on the beach is banned! Street vendors aren't allowed to hassle you on the beach ... read more

This postcard shot was taken on an early morning walk to the souveneir shops. While my wife was busy looking at necklaces and bracelets to bring home to friends, this view caught my attention. I know I've already seen something similar to this somewhere but it was worth a shot. Good thing I brought my brother's camera along with me. -- http://peckergreen.multiply.com/... read more

Arrived in Manila half past midnight on 11th of March. My parents and sisters were so happy to see us, they played with our kids for hours. There were no sleep in sight as we still have to unpack and repack for our flight to Boracay later that day. Though lacking sleep, my kids seemed more energized having so many playmates. So after the car-plane-van-boat-trycicle ride, we arrived at Sur Beach Resort, our home in Boracay, having stayed here 3 times in the last 3 years. We just love going to this resort, because you get to stay at the best, whitest, and widest part of the beach, which is Boat Station 1. The service is great and although a bit pricey, its still cheaper than most resorts in the area. We were so excited for ... read more

This morning around 11:15 I went back to the dive center to ask about their dives for the day and who would be the dive masters. I settle on a dive leaving at noon for Camia's Reef, a wreck dive nearby. This dive went much better and I went with Jade and a German girl doing her Advanced certification and they were both respectful and mindful of their surroundings. We saw a lot of cool things there but it was a short dive so I’d like to get my nitrox cert I think. This was about 29 meters so we could only stay 35 minutes without the nitrox. I talked with Jade about Oliver from yesterday because he’s the head of the diving center and he said he’d talk to him about it, but again didn’t ... read more

This morning I went a little early, filled out a form with my information, gave the lady my diving cards, and got some equipment for the day. We had our briefing and went out on the boat. It was a short ride to Laurel, our first diving site, and when we got there we quickly got in and went down. I was with four others, one a couple, and one man who was to be my buddy, and the dive master, Oliver. When we got in the water my buddy felt uncomfortable and decided not to dive, so my buddy switched to Oliver. Well, we went down and saw the sloping reef populated by many soft and hard corals as well as fish, obviously. I am surprised they still have anything though, as my dive master ... read more

This morning we woke up a little earlier than for our other flight because this time the maximum baggage allowed is only 10 kgs! I don't know how anyone can pack that lightly, but I think it’s because the planes they take to Caticlan are smaller than the others. Anyways, we needed to go to their cargo to send a bag full of our extra kilos, the cheaper option. We took a taxi, paid the 200, and weighed and reweighed our overweight bags until we had only 10 kilos each, sent the cargo, and walked to the terminal. The flight was very fast and didn’t even take an hour. They are in the process of building the airport building, so when we got off the tarmac we just waited by the side for our bags before ... read more

It's been a week since I came back to the US. It took awhile for me to get over jet lag. I posted 24 pictures up today on facebook (out of 240 altogether). Overall I had a great time there. It wasn't just a luxurious vacation, it was part adventure. The highlight was Boracay. White Beach, as of my visit, was beautiful and uspoiled. Manila was OK. The original plan was for us to come back to Manila and do a series of day trips. Easier said than done. Traffic in and around Manila was horrendous! It takes a hour of stop and go traffic just to get out of the city, then add to that the actual travel time it takes to get to your destination. But I did manage to get out with the ... read more

Had a late night last night. Went clubbing and didn't get back until around 3am. Today it's finally sunny. Since Friday it had been overcast. It was hot and humid. Mostly cloudy. The sun would come out 20 minutes at a time. It even rained a little bit. Today, knock on wood, has been hot and sunny. ISLAND HOPPING We went on a three hour island hopping tour yesterday. We went to Crystal Caves which was amazing. My friend had a chance to go snorkeling. ... read more
