Golden Week is a collection of 4 national holidays in a seven day period, starting around the last week of April and ending on the first week of May. April 29 is the Showa emperor's birthday and May 3,4 and 5 are the other 3 national holidays. So for this year, there were 2 consecutive long weekends, 3 and 4 days respectively. Most Japanese people choose to travel this time of the year, us joining the pack too, sometimes to visit Rinka's folks down south, but this year we wanted a nearer destination. April is my golden month. It spring holiay, thus my work days are pretty scarce. But I still feel the urge to do something special and travel with the rest of country come Golden Week. Its just too hard to stay at home, ... read more

We have always wanted to have a wedding, since our unceremonious civil one in New York nearly 6 years ago. But life as it is, always had funny way of distracting your efforts, and gear it toward more important things, such as having a child... and then another one. We always think of ourselves as very parctical people, thus we wanted to hold off our wedding a little bit longer, to enable us to save a little money for a very simple wedding. A simple wedding for practical people, sounds just right. So come wedding prepearations. First was the wedding gown. Cue word is simple, Rinka had browse so many website and simple and cheap doesnt go well for her. Then finally we came across this famous Filipina designer who made gorgeous, simple, yet elegant wedding ... read more

All the while Osaka plays second fiddle to New York City, the place we loved so dearly but left it for practical reasons. We can't help it,New York City was the backdrop of our love story. Me and my wife in a romantic and fun city, while being young and without parental responsibility, thats New York. While Osaka is a place where we toil and raised our children all on our own apart from our families. Sadly, our perception of Osaka falls victim to our new circumstances. But this time this change a bit. We have been constantly checking the weather, days ahead our prenuptial photo shoot. The forecast changes slightly on a daily basis, but never on the good side. It was either cloudy, rainy, or partly sunny At this point, we are not counting ... read more

We all have places we knew by heart, and like a charmed lover, makes us keep coming back for more. And everytime we revisit that place, we fall in love over and over again. Sometimes we even get lucky that every visit enriches us and make us connect more with ourselves as an outcome. San Francisco is that place for me. Every visit is a memorable one, the recent ones always more fulfilling than the last one, and more self enrching and memorable, 6 visits in 4 years, damn right, I kept leaving my heart in San Francisco. Our blog has been in hiatus since August of last year. You need to travel to maintain a travelblog and sadly we haven't been doing that. This year marked our 6th year as a married couple. Our memories ... read more

Its been a busy summer for us. We didn't get a chance to see any big matsuri (festivals) or hanabi (fireworks display) which define summer in Japan. These festivals are really nice to see as most highlight the beautiful Japanese culture, but it also atttracts big crowds and as such being held in summer, attendees should bear with heat and humidity. But we can't let this summer pass by without at least attending less popular matsuri, so we thought. We chose to attend the light/ candle festival held at the Osaka castle. Although less popular, it still does attracts the crowd and the oh so present humidity lingers quite annoyingly. A lot of shrines, temples and castles around Japan usually had these events, where they lit up thousands of candles, bearing symbols or just simply spreading ... read more

Seeing ferries docked at the waterfront restaurant, as we dined with friends three months ago, our turned on how fun would it be to take a cruise to Busan. So the next day, my wife went to research about this not so popular casual cruise among non-Koreans living in Japan. I swore never to take a cruise in the past. I always had this crazy fear of being trapped in the open water and counting hours of hunger and thirst before you get eaten by sharks piece by piece. An airplane crash in most cases would kill you instantly, so flying always offers a great relief. However, this so called "casual cruise" to Busan cost a little less than a plane, plus kids 6 years below are free. That means we will be saving a lot ... read more

Arrived in Manila half past midnight on 11th of March. My parents and sisters were so happy to see us, they played with our kids for hours. There were no sleep in sight as we still have to unpack and repack for our flight to Boracay later that day. Though lacking sleep, my kids seemed more energized having so many playmates. So after the car-plane-van-boat-trycicle ride, we arrived at Sur Beach Resort, our home in Boracay, having stayed here 3 times in the last 3 years. We just love going to this resort, because you get to stay at the best, whitest, and widest part of the beach, which is Boat Station 1. The service is great and although a bit pricey, its still cheaper than most resorts in the area. We were so excited for ... read more

Kyoto and Nara are 2 of Japan's ancient capitals both located in the Kansai region. And like sisters, one is more popular and considered prettier than the other. The prettier one to most people would be Kyoto, which most of the time, top the must see places in a travelers list. While Nara may always be on the places to go to list, it will never beat Kyoto on the top spot and sometimes travelers will only consider going there, if they still have spare time. Kyoto for me is a very beautiful place, but Nara too has its charm that one can never see in Kyoto. I for one tend to ignore this Nara charm, when I visited it 3 years ago with a friend of mine from the States. It was spring then, so ... read more

A friend of mine arrived for a 12 day visit here in Osaka from the Philippines. She couldn't come at a worst day of the year. In my 4 years living in the city, snow is very rare, thus it's kind of strange that there was heavy snow on the day after the night of her arrival. The whole tour schedule I prepared for her visit had to be changed. We were supposed to go to Kyoto on the first day but ended up having to spend the day at the mall. We then braved the chilly cold weather the next day at Universal Studios Japan. For her trip to Japan, I was really looking forward to bring her to Kyoto. The prefecture is Japan's ancient capital, and it's know for its numerous ancient historic monuments, ... read more

Just came back from Fukuoka, and headed straight to Koyasan the next day. Still on my New year holiday, and luckily kiddie daycare is already back and running. So we sent our kids to the daycare for the day, and finally made the journey to the famous Mt. Koya. The place is 860 meters above sea level and dotted with quite a number of World Heritage Sites pertaining to Esoteric practice of Shingo Buddhism, which has a large following all over Japan. I always thought of visiting this place, but always had a change of plans at the last minute. I was thinking that maybe I wouldn't experience its beauty at the same level as those who are practicing the faith. But, I was so wrong. The place is completely a world on its own. The ... read more
