These past few days have been especially packed, so forgive me if I skim the minutiae like what we had for breakfast. Actually as it turns out, we couldn't even have breakfast our final morning in Sagada because we only had enough Pesos left to get to Banaue, our jump-off point for the rice terrace town of Batad. Sagada doesn't have an ATM and no currency converter places were open on a Sunday, so we just hopped the next jeepney out of town. We had to change jeepneys in a town called Bontoc. It's customary for the young local males to hop onto the roof of the jeepneys and sit among the strapped down bags, and for that leg, I had to join them. The benches in the back of the jeepney filled up quickly and ... read more

We have spent the last several days exploring the north of The Philippines. I have lost count of the sheer number of times we shook our heads in wonderment and exclaimed, "Wow! Gorgeous!" Probably at least 58 at last count! We began by visiting the town of Banaue in the north of the Philippines, self proclaimed to be one of the 8th wonders of the world. Well, I am pleased to say that this is one place that earned it! After two days of travel to get here, much of which was along spectacular mountainous roads, we arrived surprisingly on time at 4:30pm in Banaue town. We quickly checked into a basic but nice room and went to explore town while we still had some light. Everywhere you looked was a spectacular view of mountains and ... read more

Originally my next stop was the far North of the Philippines, to visit the former headhunter tribes of the Kaylinga province. But after speaking with several locals, I changed my mind. I had heard this area was a true wilderness, a remote mountain region which is rarely visited by tourists. A place where the tribes still live by traditional means, and you would see livestock running around everywhere and women wearing bones in their hair. But the first person I asked about the area said to me "don't go there". I enquired why, and he just shook his head and said again "just don't go there". He would not speak further on the matter. I spoke to several more local people. Some said that the tribes were friendly people, and I would not have a problem. ... read more

I was planning to check out Sagarda this morning but there was a time issue, the bus to Banawe was supposed to leave at 2pm, but apparently they are having mechanical problems so I wont know for a while whether or when it will leave, I am keen to get there today as I want to see the rice terraces at Banawe before heading to Manilla tomorrow. An American woman travelling alone was murdered near Banawe a while ago so I will need to be careful even though everyone says it was an unusual incident. Still better safe than sorry. Two little boys just ran in and yelled 'Hello Americano' cute but a little insulting LOL. My leg from ankle to thigh is a sickly yellow today, and at times gives me some discomfort still ... read more

Banaue to Batad English/ tips for travelers: really worthwile to do a two day hike in this region. the rice terraces are beautifully located! nice view from the hotels on the fields. You can do it by yourself but we met people that got lost during the part of walking through the terraces. If you take the night bus from manilla, take your sleeping bag, it's really cold!

I have been -- and continue to be--rather delinquent in my email blasts as of late. I duly apologize and hope you understand with all the demanding work and long hours at the Santo Domingo project in the Philippines, it really was quite difficult to get any information out, no matter how short. The project wrapped up last weekend, I skipped up north with a friend for a few days of R&R in the mountainous regions of northern Luzon (in the way north of the Philippines) and just a day or so I arrived in Hong Kong, visiting another friend who lives here part of the year. More details to follow but I wanted to let you all know, Marc Young, Hands On Operations Manager, has posted a new 120 day director's report on the website ... read more

Hola a todos! HAAAMMMMEEEERRRRR!!!!!!!!

The Philippines has, so far, been nothing I had expected. Somehow I'd imagined it was a country full of nurses and smiles. It appears, however, that the nurses have all gone abroad and I've been worried at times that they've taken the smiles with them. I met up with Bindal in Manila. Since then we have had a succession of sleepless nights on buses and stressful days organizing buses. Over that time we have been given an incredible amount of misinformation, which I would like to believe has at least been well intentioned. One guide book states that the Philippines is one of the Asia's largest English speaking countries, yet somehow we have struggled to understand and to be understood. For this reason, this blog is dedicated to what we have discovered to be a language ... read more

Sorting through my collections of digital photos dating way back, I came across those of a trip long forgotten. Our little trek to the Cordillera Mountains to see the infamous Banuae Rice Terraces. Of course, it was Rob who I dragged along for the trip… as always. It all started with just wanting to spend the weekend together. I don't quite remember why we went for such a rigorous trip but from the photos I have, the travel was worth the effort and time. Banaue is located in the Cordillera Mountains and is about 9 hours away from Manila. Since it is situated high up in the mountains, there is no other way to get there except by land. It's either you get there at the projected 9-hour travel or you'll arrive a few more hours ... read more
