The scenery to Bontoc from Sagada is spectacular but I was so tired I fell asleep. In Bontoc we asked around where buses leave for Banaue, we got pointed to this dilapidated ugly bus, sign say Santiago but we were assured it goes through Banaue. It was full and some people standing, three people in my aisle, so uncomfortable, and it started raining they did not cover the roof where our packs are so i prepare for soggy clothes later. The ride was rough, dirt roads and hairpin turns but somehow we made it to Banaue before noontime. We decided to head to People's GH, very cheap for only 200 pesos a night, Jonas and I dropped our stuff in my room and had a quick lunch and we took a hired trike to Batad, about one ... read more

Mt. Pulag Ever since I saw pictures of Mt. Pulag on the net, I promised myself that one day I to shall have my picture taken with a backdrop of a sea of clouds. Last Dec. I finally convinced my friends to climb this mountain with me. Mt. Pulag is the 2nd highest mountain in the Philippines (second only to Mt. Apo by 110ft or so). Take note as of the climb I have had no real physical exercise for the past year or two! I was able to arrange the climb with a travel group that fixed everything for us. They provide the transportation, tents, food and guide. If you’re interested in climbing Mt. Pulag, here’s our itinerary and cost breakdown. Ill also include some useful contact info. You can climb Pulag on a ... read more

On our return to the Philippines we spent just one night and day in Manila before catching our night bus all the way up the Banaue in the Cordillera region, famed for it's rice terraces and beautiful mountain views. The bus was far from the best we've been on but like most transport in the Philippines it was stupidly cheap for a 9 hour journey at P450 (£5.92) so we didn't complain. We arrived in Banaue at around 7am and after only a few hours sleep on the bus we decided we'd have a relaxing day to catch up on sleep and take in the tiny town. In retrospect we could really have fitted in a trip to the famous viewing area overlooking the town but hindsight is a wonderful thing that lives only in the ... read more

The reason for choosing to come to the Philippines at this time is so that we could spend Easter with our Friends, Carl & Cheryl Rich and their15-year old son David. This and our Exodus tour starting in late February were really the two anchor dates for our whole trip. Fortunately, the rest of the people we were to visit were flexible enough to accommodate a couple of aging Americans with a thirst for adventure. Our time leading up to Good Friday services found us exploring the SIL compound and surrounding towns with Carl and Cheryl. We visited classrooms, school activities, Bible studies and pray times. We became familiar with some of the local Ifugao (the regional people group) customs and even visited an American expatriate living in a nearby town. We ate breakfasts by ourselves ... read more

1. Leave the unforeseen free wine and food night in your Manila guesthouse to catch a night bus to Banaue. 2. Do stay awake throouh the whole ride and experience the amazing impact of road bumps and the cry of brakes when the bus hits the Cordillera mountain region (and possibly somebody on the road). Make a complaint to a bunch of Philippinos who start blazing Bonnie Tylerish music from their radio 4 o'clock in the morning. 3. Arrive in Banaue at seven in the morning and instead of a glorious view see only grey. Wonder if the impenetrable fog will clear out. 4. Check into a guesthouse, then 15 minutes later decide to leave as you can't see a bloody thing because of the fog. And hey, Banaue is touristy anyway! 5. Hire Jordan the ... read more

Soooooooooooo yup. When writing a blog on a monthly (or more) basis, it becomes pretty difficult to edit the stories down to a manageable load, but here goes... After a very reluctant goodbye to both Siargao and my Agnes (yes she's mine now) I ventured off again alone to explore the most amazing country I have visited yet (which can't be hard seeing as its only country no.3!). I had heard about the mountains and rice terraces up North and decided that a cool contrast to the heat would be a welcome break. Turns out that Sagada wasnt just cool, it was bloody freezing! In true Lizzie style, as I arrived, a Typhoon signal no.2 was making its way through the little mountain town. SO, I spent a pretty uncomfortable night or two struggling to sleep ... read more

Sleep wouldn't come even in this semi-luxury, AC'ed bus. Maybe it had to do with still being on a natural high from swimming with the whale sharks. Or maybe it was because of the frequent stops for bathroom breaks and midnight dinners. Or maybe, just maybe, it had to do with the heart-breaking, never-ending screams of a baby one row back. Whatever the cause, sleep just wouldn't come. All night we drove, half-conscious but fully annoyed, from Legaspi in Luzon's deep southeast to Manila arriving at about 5:45 am. The intention was to breeze thru the capital and head up north. As it turned out, the station with buses to Banaue was on the other side of town. A kind bus driver offered us a free ride and we stretched out in recliners watching Manila come ... read more

UNESCO called it part of world heritage in 1995. All over the world, it is known as the eight wonder of the world. I am referring to the Banaue Rice Terraces which I visited in the third week of April, 2008. The rice terraces are still in its moment of grandeur. They are more awesome and majestic when they are viewed in actuality. It is as if the Filipino forefathers who built this ancient engineering marvel were finding a way to be closer to their gods in heaven. But no, these terraces were actually fashioned from the side of the mountain using their bare hands and with the help of stone tools in their attempt to become self-sufficient in rice and other sources of food. The rice terraces that I visited are located in Batad, Banaue. ... read more
