Background: In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power.

Hi everyone. Well after a break of about two weeks we have returned from our trek in Nepal. Our much awaited train tickets spirited us up to Gorakhpur, a biggish city acting as a transport hub and popular jumping off point for the Nepalese boarder. A pretty slow bus trundled us up to Nepal, and an even slower creakier bus took us on to Pokhara our main base in Nepal. After a busy day rushing around town we found ourselves a guide/porter to carry most of our gear and make sure we didn't get lost, as well as sourcing some hire [View Full Entry]

Thrill Seeking

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
Am still here, in Pokhara, and am finding it quite hard to leave really. Since I returned from the trek, I have settled into the place - well to Lakeside, which is unsurprisingly the section of town that lines the side of the lake, and home of touristland, and stayed within that 2 mile square. The trek seems like a distant memory now, I just reread my blog to remind myself. The first few days when I returned I amused myself by one day hiring a bike and cycling out of town to the International Mountain Museum which is excellent - [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! Well, we've done so much since the last entry that we've almost forgotten what we've been doing! We made it to Butwal okay (this time!!) as the strike luckily wasn't affecting the road from Pokhara. We went to Butwal to visit Phil's aunt and uncle who work at the Butwal Technical Institute (BTI), but unfortunately when we got off the bus we were surrounded by rickshaw drivers who apparently had never heard of BTI!!!! (Even though it was about 2 minutes away from where we were standing and Sa had noticed us passing it from the bus!!) They also [View Full Entry]

Real quick...

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
A lot to say, but no time to say it. Nothing bad, all good. But we're now in Pokhara and about to leave on our trek (the taxi is waiting). Just wanted to get an message out real quick in case we can't get online in the next week (we expect to be gone for about 7 days). We may indeed have internet up there, but just in case... you now know where we are. I guess that wouldn't hurt: we're going to Annapurna Base Camp, so that's where we will be... come find us?? ;) Anyway, we have a guide, [View Full Entry]

Namaste!

First week in Nepal

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
Today is Sunday, and I am in Pokahra - Nepal's second city - sizewise, and touristwise I think.. It is a lovely lakeside city, and is pretty much known and the start and end of point of several trekking routes as far as I can make out. Except Everest ones - which I am wisely decided to opt out of - it's till pretty cold up there, and I am more a walk from one side of the pub to the toilet person, so am staying within realistic boundaries. Coming to Nepal has been really strange. I flew in from Delhi [View Full Entry]

Sheltered under the snowy peaks of the great Annapurna range, Pokhara provides a most welcome relief from the intoxicating, overwhealming enormity of Varanasi and our rapid ascent through the backbone of India. A tourist town to be sure, but what a tourist town. Relaxed atmosphere with cafes scattered along the shore of a (fairly) pristine lake. Bakeries, restaurants and more nick-nack shops than you could shake a stick at. After the mania of India, this place is heaven. Add to this the fact that 10 minutes walk and you're on a wooded hillside or in rice paddies or looking out over [View Full Entry]

I love Nepal! Im already sad about the prospect of leaving and we have only just arrived! We are now in Pokhara, a large touristy town set on one of Nepal's largest lakes. It is so busy as it is one of the best places to view the Himalayas. On a good day you can see Mount Machhapuchhare refected in the lake. Apparently anyway as it has been over cast and cloudy ever since we got here!!! Im so annoyed but having said that the scenery here is still amazing. We arrived by local bus, which does still make us slightly [View Full Entry]

Love at first sight - NEPAL!!!

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
I LOVE THIS POLACE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!! After leaving Varanasi, we tool a the 12.30am ( late as always) to Gorakpur, Varanasi station was no where near enough scary as the one at Agra!! Maybe we are getting used to it. We boarded the AC2 carriage and fell alseep straight away on the comfy beds. At 7pm we arrived as Gorakpur where we needed to take a 3 hour bus or jeep to the boarder town called Sunali and cross the border into Nepal. Border Crossing into Nepal From the many stories from familty and friends in India, I was expecting a [View Full Entry]
