Headed gingerly back down the valley from the snowbound Macchapuchhere base camp, sliding down steep banks where thesnow had compacted into ice from other hikers (even the porters fell over a few times !). Fell over fairly spectacularly myself, luckily managing to break the fall by a combination of my rucksack and watch... Further down the mountain reached the Jhinu hot springs near Tikhedhunga, having an afternoon off hiking to soak and steam in the bath temperature mineral water, occasionally interrupted by freezing dips in the adjacent glacial stream. Later watched some Nepalese style music and dancing, briefly joining in at the raucous and sociable teahouse, with a mix of local villagers, guides, porters and trekkers from all over the world. A couple more days of hillly walking brought us back to Pokhara, passing an impressive ... read more

Continued hiking along the valley from Ghorepani on undulating scenic paths through colourful pink and red rhododendron forests. Passed green hillside terraces filled with spinach and potato crops greeting friendly locals along the path with calls of "Namaste", and playing competitive "Uno" card games into the evening with an international mix of fellow hikers. Gradually started climbing again, spotting buzzards circling overhead as the weather closed-in. Hiking through chilly rain and crossing the snowline at around 3400m, we slipped and slid our way in the snow towards Machhapuchhure (Fishtail) base camp, watching avalanches thunder down cliffs on both sides of the steep valley. Quickly warmed up in our first heated dining room over a hot chocolate, as we watched the snow gradually piling up all around. Waiting for the snow to ease the next day eventually ... read more

Met our friendly trekking group with 2 Canadians and 2 Australians in Pokhara (plus the guides and super-fit porters) and took a minibus up to the starting village. The first two days were spent climbing challenging stairways up into the mountains (around 2000m up in total), crossing wobbly suspension bridges over fast-flowing rivers and staying in basic (outside bathrooms - brrrr!) but characterful teahouses. Reaching Ghorepani (rewarded by tea and chocolate cake) had a pre-dawn start to join the slow queue of people ascending Poon Hill, the steep ascent and freezing temperatures easily justified by the gorgeous views as the sun rose over the high mountains, gradually illuminating the whole range including 8000+m Dhaulagiri. Next on to Annapurna base camp...... read more

After a brief stopover in Kuala Lumpur arrived to the crazy world of Kathmandhu, its manic, polluted streets full of motor-scooters and buzzing atmosphere providing a stark contrast to the orderliness of Singapore. Visited the central Durbar Square with its impressive former royal palace, intricately carved temples and home of the Kumari Devi living goddess - very young girl brought selected from a local village and periodically paraded through streets until puberty. Explored the palace with its (very) extensive and eclectic museum on the ex-monarchy including numerous hunting trophies and a random selection of personal effects, and climbed tower for some hazy city views. After a brief interlude to fix broken camera (braving more mad streets and enlisting a helpful policeman to cross traffic at one junction), caught a taxi to the atmospheric Swayambhunath Buddhist temple, ... read more

Landed late at Changi Airport to a hot evening in Singapore, chatting with a friendly taxi-driver en route to stay with friends in their 4-storey appartment, admiring the city skyline with its modern skyscapers and giant ferris wheel illuminated against the night sky. Explored the famous Botanic Gardens, following plant-life through time on the "Evolution Path", walking behind a waterfall and staying cool by eating ice-cream. Headed into the centre past huge shopping malls full of designer shops (and Marks and Spencers), eventually reaching the historic harbour area for a visit to the fascinating and ambitious Asian Civilisations museum, with its exhibits on history and religion ranging from the Indian subcontinent to across SE Asia. Next day headed out on a harbour boat-trip dwarfed by the surrounding buildings, which finished to the backdrop of an intense ... read more

Arrived in Brisbane to blazing hot sunshine and after a refreshing dip in my hostel pool visited an ex-Gatwick colleague, catching-up over a curry and a couple of beers. Headed north through the jagged Glass House mountains, surreally jutting out from the otherwise flat, green landscape. Bravely (?) saw off a large green snake on one of the hikes (disappointingly non-venomous), and encountered a docile kangaroo before climbing to a hilltop lookout. Next day went to the popular Australia Zoo - fed a carrot to an elephant (!), saw a couple of intimidating tigers and watched some "Steve Irwin" style crocodile entertainment. Drove up to Fraser Island and joined a "Cool Dingo" tour - speedily bumping over sandy forest tracks to some fun music and learning lots about the local ecology from our insouciant guide. Played ... read more

Spent a couple of days exploring Sydney while staying with hospitable relatives, its bustling, expensive, big-city feel contrasting sharply with laid-back Tasmania. Watched an enjoyable performance of La Boheme at the stunning Opera House for a high-brow interlude, the impressive singers and orchestra supported by perfect acoustics. Later caught a ferry out to Manly for a storm-interrupted swim in the wavy ocean and a walk across the headland with its second world-war gun emplacements and pretty water dragon lizards (legally protected after being stolen for pets !). Took first train-ride of the trip up into the Blue Mountains, staying in the little town of Katoomba. Saw striking "grand canyon-esque" views from Echo Point before a steep hike down and back from valley floor through dense forest, helping guide several confused tourists en route. Visited Wentworth Falls ... read more

Picked up a tough but gas-guzzling 4x4 from Hobart, driving through fire-scarred forests and homes to world-heritage Port Arthur, a 19C penal colony for deported British convicts by a beautiful natural harbour. A fascinating tour to the "Isle of the Dead" graveyard and interactive museum provided brief vignettes of the deportees lives and treatment. Next stop was the wildlife haven of Maria Island, climbed "Bishop & Clerk" mountain for fine views from the vertiginous, rocky summit before racing back to the tree-line ahead of a big storm breaking; found shelter and a very bedraggled Wombat at Darlington penitentiary, and then had a wave-tossed crossing back to the mainland. Headed up the coast to Freycinet National Park for a circular hike to the perfect arc of Wineglass Bay, hiding amongst the rocks from a persistent lunch-snaffling wallaby. ... read more

Arrived in Australia to a blazing hot Melbourne heatwave during the annual Moomba watersports festival. Enjoyed the relaxed cafe culture listening to buskers in the sun, then watched some speedy wakeboarding and waterski competitors on the river, followed by a loud fireworks display and lively Mexican band playing late into the night. Met up with a friend from home and visited the iconic MCG for an excellent tour and museum visit (sport taken pretty seriously over here !), and ascended the Eureka Tower sky deck for highest viewing in the southern hemisphere, dwarfing the other skyscrapers with 360 views across the city. Hopped on a tram to St Kilda for some tasty seafood including chilli crab and walked along breakwater to watch little blue penguins swim ashore, and water-rats paddle in the harbour as dusk fell. ... read more

Arrived at Fiji airport to a wave of tropical heat and a cheery welcoming band. Quickly adjusted to relaxed "Fiji-time" by lazing and swimming at the resort pool with a brief trip to Nadi to see the colourful Hindu temple, stopping for a freshly-cut coconut en-route. Next day hopped on a 5 to-a-row local bus across Viti-Levu to Suva the chaotic capital, staying at the aptly named Raintree lodge on the edge of the jungle. Took a very hot and muggy guided trek through the Colo-i-Suva forest park, slipping and sliding over rocks and muddy paths to waterfalls before visiting the national museum with its giant ocean-going canoes and tales of cannibalism (and dodging the heavy tropical thunderstorms that started to flood the museum !). Travelled up to the Navua valley in the highlands for a ... read more
