Background: In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power.

(Matt) The bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara was supposed to take 6 hours, the journey took us over 13 hours because coming in the other direction, about ten cars ahead of us, a truck hit a minibus which in turn crashed into a wall hitting a school girl and damaging her legs (she went to hospital and was ok). Perhaps the strangest thing from a western point of view was the reaction of the villagers where the girl lived. They chased after the truck and threw stones at it smashing all of the windows, this was very exciting as I'd just [View Full Entry]

Gambay the Sherpa Dog!
. at my host family's home meeting Gambay for the first time! He's officially from the Himalayan Mountains! .
The Adventure Begins … The first night I arrived here, Amrit and I bought enough clothes to last for a few days since my luggage didn’t arrive with me, and then we headed back to his family’s house. I got some thick Nepali and Tibetan style sweaters all for like $5 bucks each… nice. (Side note: I met my first real-live Sherpa dog ever! Gambay, a totally cool mountain dog, was officially born and raised in the Himalayas - I thought it was so cool! ) Anyway, my Nepali language instructor’s family (to include Amrit, his brother Bikrant, Bikrant’s wi [View Full Entry]

tales over tea

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
i had an interesting day, as one often does when lost in the middle of the mountains, meeting interesting people. i spent the afternoon walking along the lake with my big camera out, which often is an asset because people ask me to take their picture (like a little girl sitting in front of a guest house), or it serves as a conversation starter. i was in pokhara joe's this afternoon, a little coffee shop, looking through my photos from the morning. a british guy asked me if i was a photographer. we ended up having an hour long conversation about [View Full Entry]

lakeside introspection

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
i was ready to raise the white flag again this morning. then i got myself together, took another antibiotic, and bought a new book--Eat, Love, Pray--that was recommended to me by 2 friends who thought i would love it. i cannot put it down, except to look at the mountains. we arrived in pokhara late yesterday afternoon after a jarring ride on the luxury "tourist" bus. it wasn't all that bad, really, considering what you could get in Nepal. but 6 hours on a bus that feels almost as bad as the taxi rides in kathmandu with seats that are just [View Full Entry]

Killing Time Between Treks After hiking the Annapurna circuit, Team HAC spent some well needed time relaxing in the small (and indcredibly laidback) city of Pokhara. Compared to Kathmandu it was a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the better things in life: mainly food. We also got around to doing a couple of small activities. Ben tried out paragliding, and four of us went on a three day rafting adventure down the Kala Gandaki river. For brevity's sake I'll skip a written description and will instead let the photos tell the tale. Team HAC Goes Separate Ways We [View Full Entry]

Begnas Tal
Begnas Tal

First I'm gonna try and catch up Bandipur, Tihar, Chitwan any other random stuff then you can see my digs. Ok so Bandipur. Himalyan Encounters have a hotel there called the old inn. It's about 25 dollars a night so needless to say we did not use it! We stayed in this families spare room opposite the inn for 150 rupees a piece, 125 rupees is about a quid, its usually 126 or 127 bvut goes down [View Full Entry]

Happy Tihar!! ok its a bit belated but better late than never. Tihar is the second biggest festival in Nepal after dasian, but I like Tihar loads better. Tihar has 4 main days of celbration. Day 1 thursday is Kuhkur tihar, day of the dog. On day 1 all the gos get tika'd and a garlong round their necks, special food and generally made a fuss of. I dont think i have aq pic of Jungli, our dog at HE and the prettiest dog in Nepal, she is also the laziest spending every daylight hour fast asleep then barking all night [View Full Entry]
