More farewell tours than Frank Sinatra . . . In 2003 I was chatting with Neil after our trek and we agreed that over the previous fourteen years, and seven visits, we'd probably seen the best of Nepal, and that it was unlikely we'd be back . . . . . . . Garth should have been with us in 2003, but ended up in hosptital instead. He demanded that another trip should happen, so in 2007 there we were again. After the trek I phoned home. I commented that it was an odd feeling to be saying 'Good bye' to Nepalese friends. Mavis, obviously psychic, said 'Why 'Good bye' ? You'll be going back won't you ?' . . . . . . . . so in 2008 as we reached Chaurikharka I asked Terry, ... read more

Our arrival in Kathmandu was a shock to the senses! Swarms of people, cars blearing their horns with no regard to the road rules, minivan 'buses' with people squeezed in like sardines in a can and livestock wandering the busy streets. Luckily, our hostel for 2 nights was a lovely oasis from the hustle and bustle of the streets, which gave us a bit of time to acclimatise to all the noise and movement. There was a gorgeous garden and lots of balconies from which to view the craziness on the streets from a comfortable distance! After a night recovering from our sleepless flight from Europe, we braved the streets in search of some cheap trekking gear. Our 21-day Annapurna Circuit trek started in a few days and we would be climbing to an altitude of ... read more

Maar eerste ... read more

Day 4 5 am alarm to get us up for our 6:30 flight to Jomsom. We had coffee on the roof of the airport as the sun rose over the Himalayas. Spectacular. The runway in Jomson is short so landing is dramatic. As I write this, we are sitting in Jomsom waiting for our bikes that were coming overland. This is a hurry up and wait day…with the bikes always being a ‘’little bit” late…all day. We did a short hike through a local village. The landscape here is very dramatic or maybe severe or barren or some other similar descriptor. But strangely, the major local crop is apples. I have a huge bag of dried apples sitting beside me that I paid about $1 for and that I may demolish before I finish writing this. ... read more

Hello all! So we have just returned from our 12days in the mountains and quite frankly we're pooped! We are now back in Pokhara for a few days rest but it's already only a week before we leave for Australia! I'll summarise our trek as best as possible to save reading an extensive essay.... SO, we started on the wednesday 26th sept by getting a tourist bus to Besi Sahar which is the first stop on the Annapurna circut. The "express tourist bus" failed both to be express and tourist which Resulted in Dan and Paul giving up their seats on a crammed local bus to allow some old ladies who were easily over 100 to sit down! Even though this was a pain, it was also a godsend as we met a great Deutch couple ... read more

I completed most of the circuit in a 12-day, 200 KM trek counter-clockwise (the way most everyone goes, since the other direction would be much more difficult at the pass) trek from Besishahar (started walking in Bulbhele) to Beni. I moved at a fast pace because of limited time, and the only part of the circuit that I didn't complete is from Tatopani to Nayapul via Ghorepani / the Annapurna Sanctuary (see map). It would be better to plan for at least 14 days, especially if you go to Nayapul, but it's possible to go even faster if you are fit and have time constraints. Most recommend close to three weeks to do it properly and to see some sights off the main trail, including high-altitude lakes (like Tilicho) and religious sites. The amount of walking ... read more
