Right at the outset, I’d like to say that I ripped off a line from The Who for the title of this blog not because I was without my wife for the Annapurna Circuit. The fact is I thought about her the entire way and wished she’d been able to see what I was seeing; I was also immensely grateful to her for allowing me to indulge myself while she waited around for me for about 10 days in Pokhara because she was having some knee issues after our trek to EBC. But the fact is that I was all by my lonesome, free to move as I wished - just me, the mountains, the yaks and the donkeys. Only that as I left Besisahar, where the bus from Pokhara dropped me off, I soon realized ... read more

Yesterday, while waiting for our guide, we were met in the lobby of our hotel by an Asian looking man, named Ashok who said he was our guide. We were expecting a guide named Krishna, so this proved confusing. Turns our Ashok was our guide from the trekking company for the following two days. He was coming by to brief us and deliver what we needed for our adventure. He began explaining, what to pack, and what to leave, where we were meeting, going, etc. Then he said the words, “mud” and “leeches”. After that, I heard nothing! Actually, I didn’t remember much of what he said before ‘leeches’ as well. Although I slept well, I was now anxious about this portion of our trip. I couldn’t get leeches out of my head. We were met ... read more

My 40th blog entry from my 14th country! My month in Nepal is reaching an end and this is the first chance I've had to write a proper blog. I have managed to cram quite a lot into such a short period of time, though not as much as I wanted to (sorry guys, no Everest pics). Coming from Phuket, Kathmandu was a culture shock. Yes, even after living in a third world country, there are still places in the world that can surprise me. I will get to that, but I think I should begin with what was my favorite experience here, and an impressive accomplishment in general: my Annapurna Base Camp trek. Nepal is a trekkers' heaven, with dozens of routes to pick from, and 8 of the world's top 10 tallest mountains to ... read more

The last part of our trek was generally pretty awesome. We spent a couple of rest days in Manang at about 3,500m from there it was 3 days up and over the Thorung La pass at 5,400m or just short of 18,000 feet. The scenery was stunning, environment steadily got drier the further we went, near the top was effectively a rocky desert but with glaciers all around. It was pretty Baltic at nights, getting down to around zero, but the sun was very strong during the day. I got sunburnt through the top of my hair/head, and no, I'm not going bald there!!! We expected to feel pretty awful with altitude but remarkably it wasn't too bad, think we were well acclimatised with 9 nights over 3,500m by the time we went over the top. ... read more

Day 16 Muktinath to Jomsom: The landscape changed dramatically and it became very arid. The villages looked very green though, like oasis in the middle of the desert. Instead of walking this part of the trail, many people opt to take jeeps, but it's worth doing it, especially if one has the time. A lot of times guides will tell their customers that the road is full of traffic, dust everywhere and too much wind. The part about the wind is true, but just for a few days. The part about the traffic and the dust, it's not bad at all. It took me 4 hours at a rather fast pace to get to Jomsom. I went past Kaghbeni, but didn't go to the village. Apparently it was a mistake, because a few trekkers told me ... read more

Day 10 I set off to Tilicho Lake. I walked the 2 hours from Manang to Khangsar and I thought I would be staying there, but when I got to the place, I didn't like it at all. I had seen in a rough map outside the village that there were other places to stay in, past the village, so I decided to keep on going. I was feeling very tired that day and did not feel like walking at all. The next place I got to was Siri Kharka. I was dead tired after the walk uphill and had something to eat and took a 2 hour rest there. I seriously considered staying there, but then resolved to keep going until I reached the Tilicho Base Camp (TBC). From Siri Kharka to the TBC, it's ... read more

I did the Annapruna circuit in just over 3 weeks. I took my time and did a few side treks as well. So it wouldn't be too long and tedious I broke it up in 3 posts: 1.- Besishahar - Manang. 2.- Manang - Thorong La (including Tilicho Lake). 3.- Muktinath - Pokhara. I wrote about the trek on a daily basis, including some general information, but also personal experiences. At the end of the third post I wrote general information that I thought would be useful; questions I myself had at the beginning of the trek and the same questions I was asked after completing the circuit by other people. If you don't want to read the 3 posts, but are in the same situation I was before doing this, then I suggest you skip ... read more

Hi all, First of all many thanks for all the kind congratulation messages on here and on facebook, email etc. It's been a bit surreal being in the middle of nowhere and not celebrating as we would if we where at home - so it's been nice to get all the messages from friends and family. We're now in Manang and enjoying a couple of rest days. We'd been trekking for 9 days straight so it's good to stick the feet up. Our tea house is relatively luxurious, we have an en-suite lang drop with shower, which is warm between 2 and 3 in the afternoon!! There's even a tiny wee cinema in the town, it's only got 4 different DVDs to watch but it feels like the height of civilisation compared to the last couple ... read more
