Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 8-11 March 2016 On the way to northern coast of Borneo, we decided to visit KL after 41 years. Wow, has it changed. The CBD and the suburb of Golden Triangle was unrecognisable to us. We couldn’t even recognise where we stayed when we were here last. This time we stayed in a serviced apartment a couple of minutes away from the Petronas Twin Towers in Golden Triangle. This area is well serviced by monorail, metro and busses to the Old Town (Chinatown) and the Merdeka Square (where all the Imperial buildings are. Kuala Lumpur has grown from a small sleepy Chinese tin-mining village to a bustling metropolis of around 6.5 million (city-proper population of 1.8 million) in just 150 years. We arrived at night and after an hour in the taxi we ... read more

The flight to Kuala Lumpur was easy and on time. It was my first flight in a few months, and I was in a middle seat, but I slept for most of it. We landed, walked forever through the airport, went through immigration really easily, and I got my bag and walked through a mall to find the shuttle. I put my bag on the bus before I had my ticket. Woops. Thankfully I got my ticket in time. I took the bus and monorail to my hostel in KL. After getting myself sorted, I bought a Hop On Hop Off bus ticket for 24 hours because I was flying out of KL the next day. Before getting on the bus, I got myself a fancy coffee and fancy passion fruit scone because Kuala Lumpur is ... read more

This blog is mainly for friends and family who don't see photos and messages on facebook. We are in Kuala Lumpur for just a day. We arrived quite late last night and head off again in the morning for our flight to Indonesia. We spent the day escaping the city at the beautiful botanical gardens here. It was very hot but now at almost 6pm it's thundering and lightening. It tends to happen most days around this time here. Off to meet some friends later that we met on the first Thai Island . hope the rain clears up. May not have internet in Indonesia, who knows these days? But if not we'll be back in KL on 16 th March.... read more

Saturday 13th February 2016 Today we were leaving Melaka to head north only 1.5 hours to the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. We flagged down a taxi, who turned out to be an old man of possibly 207 years of age and in the short 2 mile distance to the bus station managed to drive through 2 red lights and was getting annoyed and honking his horn at someone ahead of him who was doing absolutely nothing wrong. We're just glad to make it to the bus station in one peice. We grabbed some brekkie and located our bus and after a very smooth journey we arrived in Kuala Lumpur (KL) less than 2 hours later. KL is a bustling capital city and like most is in a constant traffic jam, thankfully they have quite ... read more

Tina Writes It was time to move on. We had only planned on quick stops in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur but decided to see a wee bit more of Malaysia as we went. We headed to Malacca, a wee town in between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur for one night to break up the journey. We booked a bus online for £15 each and headed out of Singapore. We had to go through border control and without a hitch we had another stamp in our passports. We arrived in Malacca and walked for a few minutes to our hotel. I believe Rob has illustrated my dislike of being too hot. A few minutes walking with my pack on is not my idea of fun so I was relieved to get to the hotel. I had forgotten I ... read more

Les ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684This morning Rach and I got up quietly and packed our bags. We had to leave their apartment by about 10am. It was a pretty late night in the end, but I had a great time celebrating my birthday which is actually today. Luckily our heads were feeling okay. I took a last photo of the city before we left. Lisa and Tama were still asleep, so we quietly left. It didn't take long to hail a cab on the street and an hour later we were at the airport. The first thing we did was drop our bags off, luckily this didn't take too long. We then went in search of breakfast and McDonald's seemed the perfect choice. Now we felt much better and went through immigration and found the gate. This flight ... read more

The cold rainy days in England have got the better of us and were in search of warmer weather again! We left Manchester on a dry but cold morning and arrived here in Kuala Lumpur to a stifling 30 degrees. Luckily, despite being in the middle of a city, our condominium where we are staying has a pool. Welcome relief! Today we visited the Batu Caves where there was an Indian Festival going on. The caves are high up in the limekarsts and many pilgrims were climbing the numerous steps carrying offerings on their heads. Some were crawling up - not sure why Tomorrow we take a short flight up the Thailand for some laid back island life.... read more

Friday 22 January Our journey from KL to the Cameron Highlands, started out without a hitch, travelled by Taxi against the manic flow of traffic and reached the Bus Station early, to find that our Coach was a grand Old Lady, with rusched, scooped satin curtains, heavy carpeting and seats to put Business Class Aeroplanes to shame. We had seats 1 & 2 behind the driver, which had footrests and reclined, if one wished. The Motorway Journey was slow at first, circumnavigating Kl with the famous towers always in view, but after that plain sailing, we did think the front suspension was a bit creaky but basically fine. However, that was until we left the Motorway and started to ascend into the Highlands. Our Driver Malay; started Giggling, talking in Tongues and generally acting as if ... read more
