Background: During the late 18th and 19th centuries, Great Britain established colonies and protectorates in the area of current Malaysia; these were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. In 1948, the British-ruled territories on the Malay Peninsula formed the Federation of Malaya, which became independent in 1957. Malaysia was formed in 1963 when the former British colonies of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak on the northern coast of Borneo joined the Federation. The first several years of the country's history were marred by Indonesian efforts to control Malaysia, Philippine claims to Sabah, and Singapore's secession from the Federation in 1965.

Took the morning bus (Konsortium SVIP) from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur Puduraya Station (s$30, was actually pretty centrally located). Although I wasn't too impressed by the city, I did get to enjoy what there was to offer. I went to the Batu Caves in the evening but the monkeys had all gone home for the day, leaving worshippers and a few roosters. There are a few shrines ppl can make a donation to and go up to/give an offering or pray to. Getting up to the caves was a daughting task, 271 steps I believe, from the top looking down, you [View Full Entry]

KL Tower
Inside Batu Caves
Their Times Square

We stayed at the Maytower Hotel for when we first arrived in KL and tried to find the Hard Rock Cafe for some civilized food. As most of our adventures go we went the wrong way but we did manage to find it after the hot, sweaty and argumentative journey. The KL tower which we could see out of our windows practically from the hotel sounded like the best bet for 1 days activity so we traced up the mountain along some rope bridges and a scary million steps to the tower. It was quite nice but was cloudy. Luckily once [View Full Entry]

This is just a quick post to say about our current situation on our journey into China. We set off from Bangkok at 2020 and arrived in Kuala Lumpur around two hours later, after eleven pm Malaysian time, after about 45 minutes sitting in the departure lounge bit before you check in we were told that everyone would have to leave the airport until 3am in order for them to carry out a pest control operation. This left us with a bit of a problem, luckily there was a food court situated about 5 minutes away which was still open so [View Full Entry]

Technophobe faces fear! For a dark ages technophobe like me, blogging is bloody difficult. But I will persevere and break through this major learning barrier and (finally!) force my way, kicking and screaming - not to mention with tufts of ill-afforded hair covering the keyboard - onto this damned beast the Intereffingnet. So please forgive the lack of content and understand that all my (already little) time has gone into taming the beast rather than honing my (very) long lost literary skills… So without further ado, hey ho cyber Silver! Getting from there to here. [View Full Entry]

Originally I thought I would be going to Jahore-Bahru for the day, then my collegue informed me that her husband has a conference in KL, and of course- how could I resist the offer to return to KL? After passing immigration, taking a bus to Jahore and then another bus in Jahore to the bus station we eventually boarded the Konsortium coach. I flew with Konsortium the last time I went, the seats are comfortable and it has air-con. Although I got a littled worried when entering Malaysia since the immigration officer was confused at my status- British national- working in [View Full Entry]

I'm a couple of weeks back from my Malaysian experience which was a well deserved rest. My school allowed me to come back to work without the quarentine period as long as I took Tamiflu while I was away. Blah blah. Malaysia was a beautiful place to visit, I'm so glad that I decided to go. I would have loved to stay longer in Kuala Lumpur especially, however, the island we stayed on was just divine. We flew out of Seoul on a 5.5 hour flight to KL and took another hour plane ride to Kota Bharu. From there we took [View Full Entry]

Malaysia, sun, tropical climate, Palms and friendly people. A country less to discover a new culture more discover calmless, find yourself in blue water like from the Bounty advertise and hang out in a hammock, explore the jungle by foot or by train, having an expensive Tiger Beer and some malaysian specialities. Malaysian people are very friendly, helpful and the have a lot of things in mind but not your money. We have been here a few days so decided just to do one blog to take us up today which is the 15th. 11/08/09 Our first proper day in Kuala Lumpur and we decided to visit a place just outside the city called Batu Caves, it’s a huge limestone cave that is used as a Hindu Shrine it has an absolutely giant gold statue outside and there are 270 steps up to the cave entrance. We arrived at the caves right in the hottest part of the day which made climbing the steps quite an effort! There are loads and loads [View Full Entry]

Monkey!
Petronas Towers
Petronas Towers

So we left Kuala Lumpur after 7 days of relaxation (and some may say laziness!) and headed off on the next stage of our journey to Gemas where we were to pick up the 'jungle train.' We were keen to get on with our travels after our recuperation period and so arrived at Puduraya Bus station with anticipation. The bus (as expected over this side of the world) was delayed- this set a tone for the rest of the journey! The driver of the nus was not the best either tailgating petrol tankers on the motorway or overtaking on blind bends [View Full Entry]
