There was an almighty rainstorm in the night, with two of the loudest and longest peals of thunder that I've ever heard. It's our last day in Maylasia and this afternoon we travel to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We expect there will be a stark contrast between the two countries and are looking forward to the change. Over breakfast we practiced please, thank you and hello in Khmer. The rest of the morning was spent cooling off and relaxing around the 6th floor pool, so that we're not too tired when we land at the other end. The Malaysians have really gone to town with their skyscrapers and the amount of buildings in progress is staggering.... read more

It was the hottest night we've had so far and the kids struggled to get to sleep. We found a much faster bus company to take us back to Kuala Lumpur, with the catching name of Nice. The bus station in Penang was very hot, in fact, today was also the hottest day we've encountered and I'm sure we could have fried an egg on the bonnet of a black car. We were back in the Ramada Hotel in Kuala Lumpur by 3.15pm, almost twice as fast as the journey going to Penang. Maylasia is a very big contrast to Java; the former is modern and quite western in many ways and it makes Java look very poor and lagging a long way behind in terms of standards of living for the local population.... read more

We said goodbye to Melaka, a fascinating place with a great vibe, good food, interesting gifts and those whacky tricycles covered with very bright decorations and a very loud beat box. We took a taxi to Melaka bus station which was very hot, however, we managed to find some relief under a cool blower. We waited about half an hour before our bus began to load and a very nice older lady kept us on the right track. Back in Kuala Lumpur again, we took the obligitory taxi to the Ramada hotel.... read more

We rose late after getting to bed just after midnight. The walk to brunch was about 15 minutes and we immediately recognised that Kuala Lumpur is much wealthier than Jakarta. Lucy in the Sky was the name of the coffee shop and the staff were very accommodating as Ed's rounds of toast kept rolling in. Hat knocked a glass off a shelf and was mortified, however, they were very laid back and even made her a hot chocolate with a teddy bear shaped into the milk and chocolate writhing on the saucer which said no worries. We caught a taxi to the Petronas Twin Towers to visit the science museum on the 4th floor. It had been created by the Malaysian petrochemical company Petronas and therefore there was quite a bit about how oil was extracted ... read more

It was a morning of sorting and packing, so we could jettison stuff that was no longer needed and reduce the weight of our bags which have gotten heavier. A late lunch and then we took a taxi to the airport. I'd forgotten to check our flight status to see if the times has moved and was relieve that they hadn't. Ed, Hat and I played games whilst Cas did a bit of shopping. The flight was only 2 hours and Cas' mis-spent twenties came in very handy as she managed to snaffle a collection of mini wine bottles from the hostesses. We arrived fairly late and the kids were brilliant again, dealing with the tiredness with much more fortitude than pre-travelling. That said, we were all greatly relieved to get into our room in the ... read more

March 20-22, 2016 Because I decided to stay a bit longer in Penang, I was only able to stay in Kuala Lumpur for two nights and just one full day. However, I had a wonderful time and thought that the city was amazing with lots of things to do. I arrived late into the city on Saturday. That evening I just walked around the neighborhood of my hotel and ate some delicious food. I decided to go to bed early and head out early the next morning to see as much as I could of Kuala Lumpur. After a small breakfast at the hotel (1000 Miles, which I recommend), I headed to the Petronas Towers. I got there around 8:30a and got tickets with the first group up to the 86th floor. The towers are beautiful. ... read more

Kool and Krazy Kuala Lumpur For a change of direction, this next trip will transport me across the vast Pacific and via Seoul, South Korea. Haven’t been in that exotic city in a few years, but I do recall the airport being a delight. But first things first and that includes a red-eye flight to Detroit. I tried to sleep during the day in preparation for this red-eye but alas, no joy. So by the time I settled my butt into an aisle seat, I was more than ready to close my eyes and doze for the next 4 hours until landing in Michigan. It also happens to be daylight savings weekend, which even further screws with my internal clock! But apparently the airline gods were not feeling friendly towards yours truly and my seatmate had ... read more

So May 2015 was my beautiful fiancé's first experience of Asia. Our plan was Kuala Lumpur for a couple of days followed by Cambodia and Thailand. We arrived in Kuala Lumpur after a long trip from Mount Gambier to Melbourne by car then a 9 hour flight. We caught a train from the airport into Sahabat Guesthouse at Bukit Bintang and spent our first day exploring despite being exhausted. It was Todds first train ride in almost 30 years! LolWe freshened up at the Guesthouse before heading off for lunch at my all time favourite Dragon-i in Pavillion Shopping centre. With our eyes bigger than our stomach we overordered and ate until we almost burst. Afterwards we went shopping. I stopped in at Sephora and started shopping up a storm. Being overtired I completely stuffed up ... read more

While we were in the Kuala Lumpur area we had planned to go and visit the fireflies at Selangor an hour's drive away. We had planned to get the local bus ( local as in ' hot and uncomfy') to Selangor and stay one night as it would be difficult to get back the same day as the trip involved a boat trip along river after dark. By chance we were invited to a B B Q at a backpacker hostel, Travel Hub, one night in China Town. While we were there we discovered they had a trip organised the next day to see the fireflies and also visit an elephant sanctuary. Noor, the organiser insisted it would be very difficult to arrange it ourselves and we should join them. At a reasonable price too. We ... read more

This is just a quick selection of photos for my friends and family who don't do Facebook. Sorry to those who have already seen these photos for boring you. We visited the orchid gardens and butterfly park in Kuala Lumpur today. That's one good thing about this city. There are plenty of places to escape the traffic and general city noise. There were also exibits of the insects and spiders that live in this part of the world. We've experienced some but it was scary to see others even bigger, hope I never see them in the wild!! From the gardens we then visited the National Mosque of Malaysia. I now know what it's like to wear a headdress like the local ladies! It's hot! ... read more
