Brunei Darussalam, which means Port of Peace (and apparently even though they have spotted great white sharks here, there is no recorded incident of anyone having been taken thus far which goes some way to supporting this notion) is ruled by, and let me try and get this straight…His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang-Di Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam. Oh, and besides being the Sultan, he is also the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence and the Minister of Finance. Which should simplify things considerably when dealing with matters of state. But apparently doesn’t. Due to considerable offshore oil reserves, Brunei is doing very well for itself, although what they’ll fall back on when these run out is a bit up ... read more

After visiting one of the most beautiful Taman Negaras in Asia like Bako, I headed to Sarawak’s largest national park which is found near three mountains: Mulu, Api and Benarat and surrounded by rainforest. The reason why I came was to see the largest cave on the planet, which was one of those places that I used to see on many documentaries about Borneo, and also the particular rock formations of limestone popping out from the vegetation. It is huge and I spent probably a couple of hours to visit just a small part of it but absolutely rewarding and, at some points, there is an opening where you can see a face shaped rock formation that seemed to be sculpted in the rock, really amazing. At dusk millions of bats were flying out of Deer ... read more

Less than an hour's walk from the head quarters, lies the immense Deer Cave: the largest Cave passage in the world... well... until April 2009, when they discovered a bigger one in Vietnam. Deer Cave is about 100m high and 90m wide: London's St Paul's Cathedral can fit in here. It's hard to give you an idea of the magnitude, if you haven't been here yourself; seeing is believing. Hopefully the video and photos give you some idea though. Did you notice the many black spots on the ceiling? Well, that's 2 million bats and they live there. I learned that bats are very useful animals and in no way are they some sort of vampires that many think they are. They eat a lot of insects and drop flower and plant seeds, so they can ... read more

Mulu Natinoal Park is situated in the middle of Malaysian Borneo, in the deep jungle. Access is limited to a 30-minute flight from Miri, or a very long boat ride. Flying it is, I concluded, and from Kuching I booked myself on a flight to Miri, and then onwards to Mulu. (There should be a video loading at the top of this post). Mulu is one of Sarawak's top attractions and home to one of the largest cave systems in the world. There are 4 so-called "showcaves" that can easily be visited and have walkways and lightings. It is possible to visit more caves by doing an adventure caving trip, but this is for experienced cavers only. The 4 caves are beautiful and I did them all in one day. The first 2 caves can be ... read more

After reaching double digit dive status in Sipadan with 14 dives under our belts, Sam and I headed to Mulu National Park in the Malaysian side of Borneo. It was another long travel day with by far the worst overnight bus I have ever been on and 9 hours in a freezing over-airconditioned airport. But in the end we both agreed it was all worth it. Mulu National Park has (arguably) the largest caves in the world. If you have ever seen the Caves episode of Planet Earth then you have seen where we were (and if you haven't seen it, then go rent it because it is awesome!) Within an hour or so of arrival we had already seen enough crazy jungle bugs to make my skin crawl. The first night in our homestay we ... read more

Wow, what can I say!!! I spent a week in Mulu National National Park - in Malaysian Borneo (Sarawak) The lodge in which I had a dorm bed is in the middle of the rainforest and within walking distance of the most amazing cave system! It all started with a flight from Kota Kinabalu (where I had spent a few days resting up and recovering from a stomach bug) on a small plane to Miri, where we disembarked had the passport stamped and reboarded again immediately, then on to Mulu. The flight was over virgin rainforest which scarily suddenly gave way to burnt ground and miles of palm oil plantation on where had once stood rainforest. It was astounding and very sad to see the immense size of it all! The plane landed and it was ... read more
