(Day 435 on the road)After our wonderful time in the lush jungle of the Kelabit Highlands, it was time for - some more jungle! To that end we made our way to the grand Mulu National Park. As with Bario, the park is only sensibly accessible by plane, so we had to take another two flights across the massive Borneo rainforest (one Twin Otter 21 seater, one Fokker 50) to reach there. Our plan of action was simple: Spend a few days in the park exploring the massive limestone caves, then hike up a steep mountain to see the pinnacles, and then trek and boat across the jungle almost all the way into Brunei on the northeastern border of the park. The first part of this plan was easy enough: A few of the most beautiful ... read more

Day 293: Saturday 18th April - Trekking to the wasp infested camp 5 I have high expectations about the coming four days. Mulu National Park has been described as the best national park in Borneo. That is high praise in an island full of national parks and abundant natural beauty. It is a half hour flight up to Mulu from Miri. There are four of us from the Highlands hostel on the flight, myself, Amy, an Australian girl who has a Swahili name I cannot hope to remember and an Irish girl. First of all, I am surprised to see the flight only half full. This is supposedly one of the premier tourist destinations in Borneo but you wouldn’t think so judging on the number of empty seats on the plane. When we arrive in Mulu, ... read more

The alarm sounded at 4.45am. This is very early for us unemployed. Nevertheless, Borneo wasn’t going to come to us so off we went and a taxi ride, bus journey and plane trip later arrived in the town of Bintulu. Advice for anyone going to Borneo: don’t go to Bintulu. The majority of people do not need this pointer, arriving at such a conclusion of their own accord. I know this because the sight of us two whities walking around the town was enough not only to make the locals stare, but actually tap their friends on the shoulders so they too could gawk at us. After a quick change to more conservative clothes in an attempt to curb the staring, we had lunch at the ‘Manchester United Café’ (the sole connection with the football club ... read more

UNCLE TANS, SABAH, BORNEO The legs had finally recovered from our ascent of Mount Kinabalu a few days previous and it was time to be off once again, so from Kota Kinabalu I headed for Sandankan where I had arranged to meet up with Zaid one final time and we were to head to "Uncle Tan's" jungle camp and spend a few days in search of all things wild. Uncle Tans is famed on the backpackers circuit as giving a real jungle experience in an area of Borneo that still has quite high numbers of wildlife inhabiting the areas around the camp. And its fair to say that it did not disappoint. But before setting off up the Kinabatangan river to the camp and away from civilisation I had one day to play around with before ... read more

It's been a while, but we've been busy indeed and surprisingly the Borneo Rainforest doesn't have much of an internet connection! Miri was our first stop after mainland Malaysia but if you can avoid spending longer than maybe 2 hours in the oil town then do it. Miri is awful. Not cheap either. The 'highland hostel' has bad reviews from everyone who goes there due to the 'crazy cat lady' who works there and is 25RM each for a dorm! We stayed in the fairland inn, which was a dive but 30RM for a double, beggers can't be choosers! Dom was chasing an enormous cockroach around the room, lifted up Laura's mattress to teach it a lesson, and found a bag full of little baggies with traces of some white powder and some custom made straws. ... read more

Three weeks off work. Two for holiday, one for study. Somewhere to hike, and somewhere to try out my new camera. Not too far away. A couple of Christmases ago, I bought Justin a book called 'Trek', which has beautiful photos of some of the world's best hikes and has proven a winner at selecting spectacular holiday destinations. So, it was to this we turned again to decide where next. Borneo definitely ticked all the boxes. We debated whether to climb Mt Kinabalu or hike the Headhunters' Trail, settling on the latter to spend some time in a jungle and decide for ourselves just how horrible leeches are. I'd just read 'Borneo and the Poet' by Redmond O'Hanlon, a naturalist and writer who joined an expedition of British special operations forces to explore the deep dark ... read more

Hey all cant really remember what i wrote in the last blog so this may not follow on. Been in Mulu national park for the last week. The only way to get to Mulu is by plane as it is completely surronded by jungle. Or you can trek and then get a boat but the boat will only leave when it has enough passengers to it is a bit unreliable!! We are staying in Diangs hoemstay because the park accomodation is full. It is quite a nice place to stay because we are a bit away from the park hq and right by a gorgeous clear river that you can swim in. The river water is also used for washing in - via a bucket in the bathroom!! And to flush the toilet another bucket is ... read more
