We arrived in Mulu National Park by plane, it was amazing flying over and seeing nothing but a continuous tree line for miles, welcome to the jungle. We were staying in the National Park itself which was lovely. That night we took a bit of a wander to see one of the local caves (one had the largest cave entrance in the world!) Part of the alure to this place is the bats that live in the naturally formed holes in the ceiling and at around 6pm the bat hour begins as they leave their home in search of food. They consume 30 tonnes of mosquitos per night in the area. They leave in their millions but as the weather was a bit pooh there were only a few thousand when we were there but still ... read more

Gunung Mulu National park, a UNESCO heritage site, is the largest national park in Malaysian Borneo and is famous for it's enormous cave network and variety of animal, insect and plant life. It's also very difficult to get to and from Sabah it's nearly impossible overland. So one very short prop plane journey later and we were arriving into the tiny air strip that serves the park and were checking into the hostel that would be home for the next few days. It was a really beautiful big room with huge windows and with an abundance of exotic insects hiding where you would most expect them! The National Park is mainly primary rainforest and, because it gets so much rain, the forest floor is very swampy. There is an extensive network of boardwalks and cement trails ... read more

Well we are now in Kota Kinabalu, sabah where we will be organising our trip up the mountain! However we should first catch up on what we have been up to in Sarawak. We spent a couple of days relaxing and catching up on some sleep after the somewhat sleepless night in J.B airport in Kuching the capital of Sarawak. A nice laid back city with lots of souvenier shops, a pleasant water front and plenty of pleasant people. On valentines day we headed from the comforts of the city to Bako National park, the boat ride that we had to take to get there was somewhat exciting and deffinately go tthe adrenaline going. Our boat man was doing as best he could to find a path through the cresting wave but one wave broke into ... read more

After all of the negativity of Bali, our trip has returned something of a large dose of excitement in the last few days, with a trip that was quite simply out of this world. Not, however, until the evil claws of Indonesian bus travel hit us again, and it nearly ruined our trip for good. We set off from Bali at 6.30pm on the 11th and it was ample enough time , give or take four hours, to to get to the airport in Java. However, at 9.30pm, we were still in Kuta - about 3 miles from where we set off. A lack of speed by the driver (something which I'd usually love) and lack of ability to direct himself meant that we set off an amazing three hours after we entered the car. But ... read more

Our next two nights were spent in Mulu National Park. This place has been described as being "indescribable", but that's just a cop out. It's a gorgeous region of rivers, mountains and jungle, plus some of the most spectacular caves in the world. The highlight was the Bat Cave, and I don't mean the subterranean lair of the caped crusader. It's actually called Deer Cave, and is home to two million bats (not deer). It's gets the name from the huge numbers of deer who came to feed on the bat guano. No accounting for taste. And two million bats can produce a lot of guano! I used to have a very simplistic view of bats. Bat sends signal at wall. Wall bounces signal back. Bat realises wall is there, and doesn't fly into it. I ... read more

Our next journey was into the wilderness of Sarawak, another jungle-clad region of Borneo. A bus ride and three separate boat journeys took us to our destination, deep within the territory of the Iban people. Until as recently as the 1960's, the Iban were fierce headhunters. This wasn't a part time hobby for these people. They didn't just lop off the occasional head. They were dedicated to headhunting, and it was an integral part of their culture which was vital to their survival and prosperity. I will explain more shortly. The Iban live, and still do live, in community buildings called "Longhouses". As the name suggests, a longhouse is a very long house, in which the whole community lives together. Each family unit has it's own section, but everyone in the longhouse is related, and are ... read more

Gunung Mulu National Park, (52,000 Ha) in Sarawak encompasses incredible caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. I arrived in Mulu at a small airport in the middle of the jungle and safely made it to the park where I was informed to put my bags in my room and get ready for our first cave visit. It all felt a bit rushed but I am glad I did it on arrival at Mulu because otherwise I would have missed the seeing the Bat Exodus from the caves at dusk - subsequent days the rains meant the bats stayed cozy in there cave homes. So after a quick change me and a Malaysian guy named Low headed for a tour of Deer and Lang caves. Both caves are really beautiful and spectacularly large ... read more

04/04/07 - We flew from Miri to Mulu. Arrived at the Park HQ about 2pm and headed straight out for the 2 cave guided tours. Very well set up National Park with well maintained pathways. We had met an Italian couple (Stefano & Elisa) in Miri at the Guesthouse who were also going to Mulu at the same time as us. We did a couple of Caves one of them being Deer Cave which has the largest Cave entrance in the world apparently.. this was the home of millions of bats (im not kidding!), so around 6pm we all waited for the main attraction of the day - which was the bats flying out of the cave to feed at night (see pictures) - we waited and waited and waited - finally they made an ... read more
