Well I have now reached the last day. I have been back in Cape Town now for about a week and managed to see Robben Island, tour of cape point, go up table mountain and various other sights. Its all been such an amazing adventure can't quite believe it's nearly over, but all good things must come to an end or so they say, well my last day is a lovely sunny affair what a nice last day. It true to say that the Western Cape has definately got under my skin and I will be sorry to leave but also happy to be heading home to see everyone. Well whilst here I have done 2 weeks of an amazing shark diving project, 2 weeks of a wonderful whale and dolphin project, riding a ostrich, cage ... read more

Well I can't quite believe I only have a couple of weeks left now - literally 2 weeks today and I'll be back in the UK. It's been totally amazing with so many different adventures and loads of photos to bore everyone senseless with! Well I'm now in Plettenberg bay at the end of my second volunteer project - so very different from the first. This time it has been with an organisation called Orca - a whale and dolphin project, we have been out on the boats a number of time and spotted many humback and southern right whales, humpback and bottlenose dolphins, loads of seals, a solitary penguin that keeps appearing and also a sunfish! Been on beach cleans, fishing for various different things, helping at the local townships school, planting trees, visiting and ... read more

Well, only just arrived really but quick update. I flew into Cape Town after a flight taking in total around 18 hours! didnt get much sleep, not fun. So kinda caught up once I reached my base, well for the first night anyway, a hostel called Zebra Crossing, which seems pretty cool. Only there for 1 night as the next day bright and breezy I was picked up (4.30am) to be taken to The Great White Shark Project in Gansbaai, a few hours east of Cape Town. We arrived and straight away were given jackets and our uniform and allowed on board to go see us some sharks!!! this time as clients next few times would be working. We headed out and within a couple of minutes our first Great White shark appeared - absolutely amazing! ... read more

Well quick update on last few days in South East Asia. I spent around 5 days in Koh Tao, an island in south east Thailand, fitting in a few days diving before leaving. The island is mainly for diving and some nice dives are to be had there. I met some lovely people but unfortunately was not in time to befriend the whale shark that had been sighted there a few days previous. I flew straight to Koh Samui and got the boat from there to my destination where I again stayed in dorms run by the dive company. Pretty nice apart from the smell from the bathroom and the fact that the shower rarely worked, comfortable and nice location and lets face it the bed was free on the days I dived - result! Had ... read more

well hello everyone, I'm now in Kuala Lumpur, well actually I have been for about a week, not what was originally planned but such is the way sometimes. I arrived initially aiming to be on my way after about 3 days to the perhentian islands, (malaysia) for some diving, but due to the festivities of Hary Raya I ended up here longer than planned. I put the time to good use, up petronas tower and kl tower to see the views. Walked around KL taking in a few sights. Did a day trip down to Melacca and birthday celebrations yesterday at the local Reggae bar with a lot of friends gathered over the last few days here :) I now head tomorrow to Koh Tao for some more diving (and maybe even spot a whale shark ... read more

well I've done a bit of diving here now, still have a few days left but have a rest day today, and lets face it there's not a lot to do here in Sempourna when not diving apart from sleep and eat, so I'm doing both along with some travel updates :) I have now had a couple of dive days with scuba junkies (whom I am also staying with in a dorm room, the cheapest but also the best way to meet other people). The first dive day tipped down with rain and involved a boat trip out (around 1-1.5hours) through very choppy waters to a place called Bohayan, the diving itself though was pretty spectacular which kind of made up for the freezing, wet surface intervals between the dives (huddled in the boat trying ... read more

Only just arrived here, so will be a very short blog entry. After my wonderful adventures in Mulu I flew down to Tawau (Sabah, Malaysia) and was picked up at the airport - rather nice for a change. I then had the hours drive (along with a friend from Mulu that was on the same flight) past so very many palm oil plantations to Sempourna - all so very sad. Its such a profitable harvest I don't know how the huge destruction can be stopped as palm oil is in everything ranging from margarine to cosmetics and under huge demand. I certainly once I return will be trying my very best to only use things with no palm oil in (it also goes under other names on the ingredients so difficult to avoid but very possible) ... read more

Wow, what can I say!!! I spent a week in Mulu National National Park - in Malaysian Borneo (Sarawak) The lodge in which I had a dorm bed is in the middle of the rainforest and within walking distance of the most amazing cave system! It all started with a flight from Kota Kinabalu (where I had spent a few days resting up and recovering from a stomach bug) on a small plane to Miri, where we disembarked had the passport stamped and reboarded again immediately, then on to Mulu. The flight was over virgin rainforest which scarily suddenly gave way to burnt ground and miles of palm oil plantation on where had once stood rainforest. It was astounding and very sad to see the immense size of it all! The plane landed and it was ... read more
