This was the most sporadic trip of all. There were 6 of us in total. 4 from NUS, and 2 from NTU. We were all quite busy with finishing projects the past week and were looking for some outlet to relax. We were also all quite exhausted and worried about whether a trip to Taman Negara Rainforest would be re-energizing or even more draining. After all, there was about 10 hours of bus transit and a 3 hours boat ride involved in just getting there. In addition, with the long weekend, it was bound to be busy as trains were booked solid and accomodations might even be limited. Up to the Thursday afternoon, we were all in limbo with a few people who seemed adament that they wanted to go. So at lunch that day, ... read more

It’s nearing the end of my time here in SE Asia and although there are still hundreds of places I would like to see, I only have time for a few short trips. One of the places left to visit is Taman Negara, the world’s oldest rainforest located in the Malaysian province of Pahang. This area of the world has never been affected by an ice age nor does it have any active volcanoes. This has allowed Taman Negara to survive and continue to be one of the most pristine primary rainforest still standing (at an age of 130 million years old). I have been planning a trip to Taman Negara for quite some time and when I finally found a time to do it, no one else from my school could come. Never the ... read more

Hello everybody! Today ill be writing in english, with the hope of making some of you more happy! I did it, i survived the jungle!! Yees! But i have to say the truth...i was scared to go deep inside the jungle by myself... So as i did not find any company for a long trekk or to stay overnight in the jungle, i just took some trekking routes that were next to the entrance of the park. It was awsome anyway! I got to see a big iguana ( i got very scared but i think the iguana was also scared!), several different ant species (from very tiny ones to some about 2 cm long ones), different butterflies and i saw an animal, which i could not identify...i think it was a big squirrel...but there ... read more

Hiya guys, I know, another blog already but somehow we've managed to fit in another country in the last few weeks so thought you'd just love to be updated, trust me the more frequently I do it the shorter they are and unltimately the better it is for you!! Anyways..... Last time I ws sitting waiting for a bus to the Taman Negara rainforest after spending a couple of days in Kuala Lumpur. KL was good, though didn't really do much apart from the obligatory trip to the Petronas Towers, which they seem to love over there, you have to watch a whole video explaining how wonderful they are, and there's a whole load of stuff going on, even a worship room which we think they use to force their employees to worship the towers! We arrived at the main village people stay in called Kuala Tahan in Taman Negara National Park at 6.30pm. The forest here is supposed to be the oldest in the world, the area was never affected by assorted ice ages or volcanic eruptions so besides people there has been little interference with the virgin jungle in the last 130 million years, (or so my little book says!) We found accommodation which turned out to be a bit of an effort after travelling for so long but was also quite entertaining. Whilst Rich was trying to barter the price of a room down with a Malaysian man the man thought he was asking where the internet was so Rich was saying 50 Ringitt a night & the man would say it's round the corner & to the ... read more

On Saturday we spent the entire day on a bus, which had the worst air conditioning you could imagine. We arrived in Taman Negara about 6.30pm feeling hot and tired. We had a bit of trouble finding somewhere to stay as it is the school holidays here and everywhere was fully booked. Eventually we found a room for two people but the owner put a mattress on the floor for Rich. We met Gorlo and Ingrid from Germany on the bus and happened to be eating at the same place as them in the evening. We arranged to hire a boat the following day to visit a cave with them. Erica, Rich and I then walked to the Woodland resort where they sold expensive beer and had a really bad Internet connection. Rich left before us ... read more

Hey Guys, Sorry it's been so long since our last blog entry, but unfortunately we've been without internet for some time, so we've got a lot to catch up on. We left Kuala Lumpur on the 20th and travelled up to Taman Negara Ntional Park by a very swanky bus with A/C and fully reclining seats! The journey took about 4 hour, followed by a 3 hour boat ride up stream to our accomodation at Nusa Camp, right in the heart of the jungle. The boat ride was really pleasant and relaxing, with loads to take in. There was jungle as far as the eye could see and many different birds, boar, water buffalo and even a monitor lizard. At Nusa Camp we stayed in a small chalet, with fan, bathroom and our own personal giant ... read more

Friday 18th August So after leaving the relative safety of the cave it was time for the final leg of our treck. Unfortunately it had rained in the night and that meant one thing plenty of leeches for everyone. After walking for about 5 minutes Amean our guide pointed out something to me on the floor, i had no idea what it was until he told me it was a leech, and it truly was disgusting, i had only ever seen one fat and full of blood never skinny and hairy and when u get close to it it rears up and senses where your feet are and tries to suck on to you. So to keep the little blighters away from me i doused my feet and legs in 90% deet and headed off, probably ... read more

Friday 18th August Anyway after a long hard slog we finally made it to the cave which was absolutely massive. First thing first was a jungle shower which amean had been telling us about. I was imagining a beautiful waterfall where we could swim, unfortunately he took us to a small stream, which due to the lack of rain over the last few weeks there was nearly non existent and then he got out the potts and pans which we were soon to be using for making our dinner and started cleaning them and told me and Paul to keep an eye out for any danger whilst he was doing this. Then he handed us the potts and pans and told us to fill them with water and strip down to our pants and pour the ... read more

Monday 14th August Well we left Khota Baru at another rediculously early time of something like 4:30 to catch the jungle train which i was looking forward to as it sounded exotic and like something out of a victorian novel where they travel the congo. Unfortunately it wasnt so and my only recolection of the train was talking to a english girl who was originally from Sri Lanka and two old smelly Malaysian ladies throwing cigurettte butts out of the window into the jungle, obviously no one told them about fire safety. Also some of the food they were eating looked and smelt extremely bad. The train journey lasted aroud about 12 hours and was rather uncomfortable and hot. We finally arrived in a place called jerantut and checked into a hostel. Paul decided to go ... read more
