Hello everyone again. Well it’s time for another update this time it is for the little place called Taman Negara which is Malaysia’s oldest rainforest to be precise it is 130 million years old. This is now a National Park. We got to the national park after a very long bus journey and a very long boat trip down the river 2 hrs and 45 minutes on the boat to be precise we were court in a massive down pour and all of us got soaked. When we got on the boat we met an Australian guy called Brad. Who we have now been traveling with for a week. He’s a great laugh and can drink more then Owen anyway. So he’s a good drinking partner for Charlie after Owen has passed out after 2. Once ... read more

Kuala Lumpar was interesting but I felt Id had enough city mayhem, it was time to get immersed in the worlds oldest rainforest (Taman negara). We found ourselves sat in long boat, speeding up the Tembling River (great name) surrounded by beautiful lush tropical forest as we cruised into the depths of the jungle. We stayed on the river in a disgusting dorm where in order to shower you had to stand over the hole in the floor/ toilet, how pleasant! But the views overlooking the national park, the floating restaurants and sounds of the jungle made up for it. On our first night we went on an organised night jungle treck. With our torches we stumbled around spotting creatures of the night. When I looked down at my feet I realised large turmites were heading ... read more

After leaving Cameron Highlands at 9am, we arrived in Kuala Tahan, Taman Negara National Park at 5pm. It was a long mini bus ride but worth it to see the scenery. We arrived at Kuala Tahan and saw that it was nothing more than a street with some hostels/guesthouses overlooking floating restaurants on the Tembeling river. It was low season and hardly anyone around. It was hard to find people to do activities and is why we were only able to do a 4hour hike and the canopy walkway. Halfway through our tour, our guide finds a leech and shows everyone what it looks like and goes on to explain about the foot long leech in Malaysia. But not to worry it only feeds on the metre long earthworm in Borneo he reassures us. Everything's bigger ... read more

Well we set off at about 9.30 and it was just as hard as yesterday but with less water to drink! We kept getting attacked by leeches too. They are incredible, they are just soooooo hard to get off. Luckily i dindt get any on my skin this time (did on last trek). Just loads on my socks and shoes. Some of the others kept getting attacked and bleed for ages. we got back at about 3.30 and luckily it was by the river so could go in. Every time i go on trek i reach new levels of 'mingingness' but i truly couldnt get any more minging than today. Yesterdays sweat, last nights dirt from cave and then a 2nd days sweat!!! Ive never felt so disgusting. Graeme squeezed his t shirt out nd could ... read more

Well we decided to do yet another jungle trek. This one was a lot harder. I think its more to do with the humidity and a lot more walking on rough terrain. We were in a group of 11 this time with 2 tour guides. We stopped off at a cave half way and went in it was full of bats pretty amazing and VERY smelly. On the way we saw a tiger print which was from the day before but didnt see any tigers! WE got to the camp at about 5ish. Well i say camp it was another cave. Lit a fire and 3 hours later had tea! WE had a roll mat to sllep on. I actually slept quite well considering i was on the end and there were apparently rats and bats ... read more

WEll we left Jerantut and got to national park. I took a while as we got a bus and then a boat. ON the boat we met a couple (irish and spaninsh) who studied in Plmyouth!! We went for a walk and saw snake, massive lizard thing, and a cool pheasant thing. Sorry not exactly sure what they were. Went over on the canopy walk which was fun a very rickety. It was soooooo humid in the jungle. We went to find a pool sign posted and found a nice spot by the river which was so cool juct what we needed. In the evening we went for a jungle walk and saw some stange insects, scorpian but not much else.... read more

Well it was a bit of a mision today. Tried to make our own way to National Park. We went to 3 bus stations in KL before we manged to get bus to Jerantut. When we did find one it didnt leave for 3 hours! So we went to find an art museum which was close by to find that was closed! Got the bus which took about 3 hours to Jerantut where we planned to sort out a trek toTaman Negara. Found a nice hostel but the town was abit like a ghost town. Sorted the bus and boat to National Park and will book rest tomorrow as we need to find more people to do trek as it will be very expensive otherwise. ... read more

So... Malaysia was interesting. But now I'm safe and sound in my little plot of land in Singapore, and I'm liking it a lot better than I have in the past. I don't by any means ever plan on moving here, but it'll do for the next couple months. My classes are turning out to be pretty interesting- well some of them- well one of them. I'm taking a Gender and Sexuality in Japan class which I actually really like. I'm pretty excited to stop in Tokyo for two or three days after the semester is over. What is Singapore like? Right now it has been hazy and grey for about two weeks because Indonesia is burning rainforests over in Java. I have absolutely no idea why they are doing that, but it sounds like a ... read more

Well......little did we realise that the transfer onto mainland would be quite so torturous!!! First up, after much deliberation, and thanks largely to a brewing tropical storm....we decided to leave paradise on the 7.30am ferry! BIG mistake...the storm a-brewing meant that it was somewhat choppy on the open seas and ERROR of all errors we managed to sit ourselves directly beneath the AC outlet...bbbrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! We arrived on the mainland basically as blocks of ice and for once it was a huge relief to go outside into the humidity...... to a place called Kuantan, where we would have an overnight stop before heading into deepest darkest Jungle territory! Kuantan was good, not a great deal to see but enough for an overnight stop........ The morning dawned to a city full of closed shops.......Simon you know you mentioned ... read more

Taman Negara is one of the oldest (the oldest?) natural rainforest in some sub-segment of the world...or maybe the whole world...any way you look at it, they tell you it's really really really old. It's also pretty close to Singapore and a great hiking opportunity for those of us who want more than an urban jungle from time to time. It's on the east side of Malaysia's "hinterland" and it's easiest to get to from Singapore by train, then take a boat and/or bus. I have to thank Thomas from Germany who did most of the organising and planning for this trip...I just followed which made life much less stressful than one of my usual "get up and go and figure it out on the road" trips. Anyhoo, on with the show. The Group: Thomas, Stefan ... read more
