Thursday 17th August So the next day we got up early and prepared ourselves for the trek of a lifetime through the oldest rain forest in the world. We had arranged a guide the day before and what a good bloke he was, his name was ameal and he agreed to just take me, Paul and Laura on the treck compared to the 12 he had taken a few days earlier, this really was going to be just us against the elements. Ameal armed witha machete and me with my swiss army knife bring on the tigers. Ameal got his friend to take us to the base camp, not before i bought a very sexy pair of rubber football boots to do the treck in, they really were rather fetching! Anyway after about an hour in ... read more

We were picked up at the respectable hour of 10.30am to begin our journey to the world's oldest rainforest. We were the only two in the minibus so we had the added luxury of being able to stretch out. All luxurious until we pulled up to get our rainforest passes, and the heavens opened - Rob got wet! We arrived at about 5.30pm and found a guesthouse to check-in. The place is very small, and it didn't take very long to explore at all. There are a number of floating restaurants and we went and had a drink (non-alcoholic as this place is dry!), and bumped into the two drowned rats from day 1 in the Cameron Highlands - It would be difficult to miss people in a place so small. We had one of our ... read more

Taman Negara is a National Park protecting one of the most ancient rainforests in the world. It was aptly named as it rained on and off all three days we were there. Still, it was an amazing experience. We had to take a 3 hour boat ride to get there in these narrow, long wooden boats. We had most of our meals at little open air restaurants that were floating on the water. It really felt like you were far from civilization. Our first day we went on two tours. The first one was to a cave system called Gua Tellinga. It was really narrow in parts and full of water, but really neat. The best part was when we got to the center and there were hundreds of fruit bats sleeping from the roof and ... read more

i spent a few days in the jungle called 'taman negara'. here i was reminded of the confucian adage "only a fool learns from his own mistakes, a wiseman learns from the mistakes of others". i wonder what the sage would say about someone who refuses to learn? it was near dusk, i was trekking solo and without a compass, while having told no one that i was headed across the river on a borrowed bamboo raft. all was fine until i was heading back and came to a Y. it was 'marked' by a downed sign. i still hoped that it would lead me to a shorter route home. i was tired of pulling the leeches off of my feet as they are quite strong and worse, gooey. by the way i only have flip ... read more

Tanam Negara After our few days in the laid back Malaysian capital we decided we were in need of some action and thought a 3 day jungle trek through the oldest rainforest in the world was a good choice. So after a fairly arduous round about trip we landed in a tiny town, where we met a few other travellers who were planning the same trip the following day, an Aussie named Trent and a Spaniard called Xabi. We all checked out the local market for some weather proof gear as we were really not prepared for one of the wettest places in the world! Alan was in luck finding a decent set of waterproofs but unfortunately all I could find to fit was a flashers mack and matching hat! The following day we were up ... read more

The travel party left downtown Malaysia early in the morning on a sequence of bus rides into the ancient forested region of Malaysia called Tamma Negara National Park. The trip began with a small trot to the rapid transit station about 5 blocks from our Hostel that took us to the bus station, where a bus took us to Temerloh for a brief pause. While I don’t exactly have kind words for the Temerloh bus station, the shopping mart there offered us all kinds of road snacks we tucked away for our next ride to Jerantut. Finally, from Jerantut a final minivan took us first to the local grocery store and second to the town which resides on a large sloth of a river that runs gently through the park. The floating restaurants and other amenities ... read more

After four days in the deep depths of the Taman-Negara national park, located in central Malaysia, the five us of emerged alive, and pretty healthy. We took two bus connections from Kuala Lumpur north to the gateway city of the national park, and were ready for an adventure. After deciding that we hadn’t done too many exciting adventures thus far, we were all pretty excited about this jungle idea. Stopping at a local supermarket, we picked up enough food for the 3 nights we would be spending in the wilderness. While paying, the cashier wondered where we would be going for week or so that she thought the food should last us. We laughed and explained that we eat lots - probably more than she’s even seen anyone eat in her life. The food wasn’t diverse; ... read more

Guest Blog: Abi Knight (Rider) Tommy and Laura have entrusted me with the care of the almighty blog for this installment. I'm deeply proud. Our next pit stop was in Taman Negara National Park, the main jungle area in peninsula Malaysia, where we bedded down in Nusa Camp - the lodging located furthest down the river and thus furthest into the jungle. Though there have been tiger, leopard and elephant sightings here, we would have needed to trek for several days into the jungle for a glimpse so instead we contented ourselves with the staples of the Nusa Camp experience. It's rare that I find myself paying good money to walk into a pitch-black jungle actively searching for poisonous insects, but that's precisely what we did on our first night at Nusa. Decked out like a ... read more
