Sunday, 22nd April 2018 We woke up to an excellent buffet breakfast spread at the hotel this morning. What was really unforgettable were the local selections corner that was interesting, colourful and well-presented. Coupled with great coffee and hospitable service from the crew members, this was an unforgettable breakfast experience for us. After our excellent meal, we hailed a grab service to bring us right to the door step of the Bratiwaya Military Museum along the leafy Ijen Boulevard. There were some street vendors lining outside the museum on a Sunday morning which I happily parted some rupiahs for a Coke souvenir. The museum is divided into two galleries with military artefacts dating back from WWII. There was even a large section devoted to the ruling Japanese during the war. From the museum, we made our ... read more

Saturday, 21st April 2018 We took a Singapore Airlines flight to the city of Surabaya to kick start our East Java journey. Flight time was slightly more than 2 hours where I had Mavis Hee's greatest hits for company throughout the flight. Coupled with SIA's great food and service, this was an easy and comfortable journey for us. Surabaya Juanda Airport that greeted us is not huge by international standards. The arrivals is a short walk from where we landed and after clearing the formalities, we were soon on the road to the city of Malang, about 95km away. Arrival at the Hotel Santika Premiere Malang was a refreshing experience. The resort-like lobby and the welcoming pool was a stark contrast to the traffic mayhem outside the property. After lunch at the hotel, we decided not ... read more

Ahoy!

From Yogyakarta we took a bus to Pacitan. Pacitan is a fairly small city near the coast of the Java Sea. Our original plan was to stay at a place called Happy Bay Beach Bungalows. From what we had read it was a great little guesthouse that had bungalows you could stay in on the beach. When we got there, it turned out it was closed down. Our bus driver was nice enough to take us to another place he knew nearby. It looked nice enough but was full (of surfers). The owner of the surfshop guesthouse suggested a couple of other places to our bus driver and he was able to find one of them not too far away and even made sure they had a room available before he left. Hotel Rajiwali was our ... read more

The many meanings of honking your horn on the streets of Indonesia. With the many different modes of transportation and lack of road rules, there is a whole lot of horn blowing that goes on around here. There are usually two sides to the street (keep left) with a doted line down the middle indicating a separation. That apparently doesn't mean you actually have to stay on your side though. You can pass another vehicle whenever and wherever. Going uphill on a highway, no big deal! Obvious traffic coming at you from the other direction, no probs - they will go around you! The majority of people get around on motorcycles or scooters. However, there are a lot of minibuses, trucks and a few cars. I'm getting the impression that the bigger you are the more ... read more

So we went back to Krabi (a while ago now) and did a few more island trips then travelled to Phuket to see yet more beautiful islands including the set for James bond 'The man with the golden gun' We only had a couple of days there as we had to leave the country as we had only 15days on the visa. After we got kicked out of Thailand we got a flight to Singapore. Singapore is really nice but quite pricey. We did manage to find a few cheap things to do such as shopping in China town or Little India. On the last two days we went to Sentosa and spent some pretty pennies. The first day we visited the underwater world and the second day we visited Universal Studio. We really want to ... read more

If Bandung in West Java is known as Parijs van Java, then Malang is the Parijs van Oost-Java. I don't exactly know why the Dutch granted the name, but from the stories, Malang was the most favorite city in East Java for the Dutch to build their settlements. For you guys who aren't maybe that familiar with history in South East Asia, the Dutch colonized Indonesia for 350 years (yes, 3 centuries and a half) since the beginning of the 18th century. Somehow, the natural beauty and the cool climate that the city provide brought the Dutch to Malang to settle. The leftover still could be seen nowadays, the old Dutch houses, government buildings, tea-tree, sugar cane, and coffee plantations, and the existing infrastructures such as roads, railways, and water tunnels. This city is the second ... read more

My arrival in Malang was not pretty. This was my first crowded bus and I wanted to get out. But the bus driver won't just stop along the road to let you off so I have to wait till we reach some preappointed spot before I can alight. Next I must jump on a microlet to make the journey back down the same road I have just travelled. Perhaps I have not had enough sugar today because I am fuming!! We sit in the microlet whilst the driver packs it to the rafters, plus a couple more, before we head off. I am travelling blind with little idea where we are going and at some point decide it's time for some fresh air and escape! Now I am beside the road in a busy city, no ... read more
