Vonku oproti ubytku uz v plnom prude miestny trh. Podla domaceho byva kazdy utorok tak mam stastie. Klasika zelenina, oblecenie a neake tie snacky. Este kupujem dva koblizky potrete maslom a omocene v niecom sladkom. Aby sladkeho nebolo dost, davam si nabalit ryzu (vadzik) v tvare kolaca omocenu tiez v niecom sladkom. Zbalenie a smer koniec dediny. ... read more

Budicek 0.30, no veru sa mi ani moc vstavat nechcelo. Opustam dedinku a tmavou dzunglo napredujem. So, My Lucky Streak Ended... I left off my last entry with a sense of foreboding that my streak of positive travel experiences was about to end. Well, it did. As you may recall, I decided to plan out the remainder of my time in Flores after hearing negative stories about accommodation from westbound travelers. My intended next stop from Bajawa was Moni, where I had planned to stay two nights - the plan was arrive and stay the night, to go to Keli Mutu for sunrise, hike back down, and stay another night. After that, I had booked a beach resort in Maumere as a special treat to myself after staying in budget places and traveling rough(ish). I also booked a ticket out of Maumere to Bali on August 9. I was wary about planning ... read more

I got up early in time for the bus at eight to Moni three hours away (ish), after having breakfast I asked the guy at the hotel about an Ojek and he told me the guy across the road would be able to take me, he spoke with him presuming he told him where I was going and with him not asking I was surprised when I arrived at the airport. But after a bit of confusion he understood where I wanted to go and took me to where the minibuses depart for Moni. I was happily greeted by half a dozen men trying to get me to take their minibus after choosing one I sat in the bus about an hour until it had just a few more people then a few more. Than ... read more

01 December 2009 - 03 December 2009 TRANSPORT: Ende to Eastern bus terminal by ojek--Rp10,000 Bus terminal to Moni by bus--Rp 30,000 (2 hours) Moni to Kelimutu by ojek--Rp35,000 (one-way) HOTEL: Bintang Bungalows Double, mandi, western toilet--Rp85,000 (inc. breakfast) In the centre of the village, this is a decent place to stay with a very welcoming owner. It's pretty noisy at night when their three dogs start harrassing people, and every now and then there seemed to be a mothers meeting of guys making a fair degree of noise at stupid o' clock! So our journey to Moni was not the most eventful. We left for the bus station in good time, wanting to arrive early to get a 'good seat.' We had an hour wait on the bus at the terminal where we were entertained ... read more

Ende to Moni

After the 4 day/4 night boat trip from Lombok to Flores, I took a couple days to relax in Labuanbajo, the town on the western end of Flores and do a couple of dives a few hours from shore. The diving, officially in Komodo National Park, is world class, stunning, colorful, with lots of macro (that's the tiny stuff) and big palegics. Dived with sharks, turtles, massive Napolene Wrasse (maybe 2 meters in length -- and they're just fishies) and enjoyed the most amazing, diverse soft and hard coral I have ever seen. At $30 a pop, the diving was not too expensive, but because I am on a strict budget (well, I do deviate at times....), I could only afford two dives and then had to move eastward. Beautiful Flores awaited. Nearly the entire length ... read more

Day 251: Saturday 7th March - The start of an adventure to Flores Today is the start of an adventure. I don’t quite know what will be involved, all I do know is that I need to be in Labuanbajo, in western Flores at 6pm in two days from now. I have a flight to Maumere in eastern Flores at lunchtime today, but with Merpati’s track record anything could happen. Then quite how I get from Maumere to Labuanbajo is anybody’s guess but I do know that I want to see Kelimutu, a trio of different coloured volcanic crater lakes which is the main purpose of my visit to Flores. Well that and linking up with seeing Komodo dragons in Komodo National Park on the islands immediately to the west of Flores. Let the fun begin! ... read more

Moni is near the centre of Flores and we needed to get to Labuanbajo over 400 km on the west coast. The Island of Flores is one huge range of mountains and volcanoes with just one major road crossing the island which, in parts, is in a terrible condition as it constantly twists and turns up and down and around hairpin bends. The complete journey is estimated to take 19 hours if driven non-stop. We had planned to break it up over 2 or 3 days. For much of the time the road is lined with houses precariously built out on stilts over the slopes. There is virtually no flat land anywhere. As we drove along we got a complete insight into the way of life out here, women washing in the river (clothes and themselves), ... read more

We took a small plane from Bali to Ende, a city in the center of Flores island. The views of the Indonesian archipelago from the air were stunning: impossibly blue water, countless tiny lush green islands rimmed with perfect white sand. We were the only foreigners on the flight, a fact that would set the tone for the rest of our time in Flores. We chose Flores as a destination mainly because of Keli Mutu, a famous volcano with three crater lakes of different colors, and because it was well off the usual tourist track. This latter reason was confirmed as we descended, landing on a tiny runway with goats grazing beside it. At least fifty people were gathered along the runway to watch the landing, waving excitedly as the plane pulled to a stop. We ... read more
