Hello So, from Kuta we got a taxi to Ulu Watu. We were glad to leave Kuta having been there for 4 days. It is so busy that we wanted somewhere much more chilled to hang out. Ulu Watu is in the South of Bali. It is a surfers paradise with big waves and we managed to fall into a group of really great people while we were there. We stayed at a place called Thomas Homestay which we read about in the LP. The taxi driver didn't know where it was at first but we finally found a sign and he drove us down a very long, winding gravel path towards the sea. Feeling rather dubious about what we were going to find we came to a few shabby looking buildings at the end of ... read more

Let me preface by reassuring my self-respecting heterosexual male friends out there: I HAVE NEVER READ THE BOOK NOR SEEN THE MOVIE “EAT PRAY LOVE” (well, at least not all the way through - I promise - though I admit to enjoying a good “rom. com” every once in a while!) I simply chose to tweak the popular title as I thought it seemed somewhat relevant in light of the movie’s culmination (“love”) taking place in Bali. As far as I’m concerned, this divine destination could very well be grounds for all three (eat, pray, love … and much more!) No offense to Julia Roberts, whom I’m sure delivered a stellar performance as she surmounted the perils of her middle age urban boredom by setting off on a existential discovery around the globe, I think the ... read more

Day one, October 13th, we arrived in Bali in the afternoon. We started of trip heading to Uluwatu, a small village at the tip of southern Bali. Unfortunately, there was a major traffic jam caused by a bad accident. We arrived at our destination, The Gecko, but they were out of rooms. Well almost out of rooms they did have the luxury suite available at the top of the hotel. We decided to spoil ourselves and splurge. We rented a motorbike less than five minutes later and headed to the cliffs of Uluwatu. The cliffs overlook the spectacular Uluwatu Beach. To get to the beach we started making our way down the hundred or so steps which are linked by a maze of warungs (little family owned Balinese restaurants/shops). Once at the bottom we went through ... read more

Ok, I've to move back a lil bit. On one lazy Sunday afternoon, Ms. Diane McFadzien and her cousin Penny Newton called me to accompany them to Rock Bar in Jimbaran for a drink. I was shocked when I arrive. They didn’t give name Rock Bar for nothing. It’s a BAR on the ROCK. It’s located inside Ayana Resort. Only 45 mins from downtown Denpasar and about 20 mins from airport. Back to Rock Bar again, I ordered a bottle of beer while Diane and Penny ordered Mojito and Whiskey Cola. And we started to have a light conversation. Before sun set, I add another one. But this time, it’s Margarita. Lycee Margarita (Damn, this is one of the best I’ve ever have). Shipping margarita with the spectacular sunset view is amazing. It’s quiet cost me ... read more

We took a trip for the day north to Lovina a coastal town well away from the mayhem. We crossed the mountains in the center of Bali to get there. On the opposite side to Bali in the south we visited the Pura Ulun Temple at sunset, where we watched an amazing chant and dance called a Kecak. I will try to download video next time! In between we saw an unusual coffee farm. Lewak coffee which is coffee that has been digested and poohed back by a Lewak which is a type of mongoose/marten! Lynn got to grips with a Lemar and a Fruit Bat.----- This trip was organised by Brandon of "The Transporter"----- a great guide.... read more

This posting is the sequel of my previous writing on Kuta (entitled Kuta: The beach of the gods), which is part of Kiki's and my summer trip to Indonesia in 2010. As described before that we stayed by the Kuta beach, we then decided to rent a small car for getting around other places. The rent price for the gas was very fair, around 20 euros per 24 hours. Kiki gave up the driving thing to me, which I understand fully, considering the traffic mess and crowd in Bali. Not to mention that in Indonesia we drive on different side than non-UK-European countries. We drive on the left side of the road, which actually the right side by the way. One morning after having breakfast at the hotel, we left for Uluwatu Temple. On the way, ... read more

We finally have something interesting to write in our blog!! We went on a 3-day trip to Uluwatu leaving Wed (27/4/2010). Uluwatu is one of the most famous surfing destinations around the world. We hired a car and driver (Pendro), and left Canggu early with Min and James( couple from Melbourne we met at Echo beach Canggu). We stopped off at Dreamland to have a look and find accommodation but it had changed so much over the years it was a bit disappointing. Pendro recommended we go to Blue point which is right in front of Uluwatu surf break. Blue Point is a resort on top of the cliff and is the only accommodation close to the beach so we decided to stay there. It was "a little" more than what we wanted to pay but ... read more

Stepping off the plane onto the palm tree-lined tarmac and into the moist, warm air of tropical Bali, the hypnotizing chimes of Asian music dance into my ears, and I realize I have stepped into another world⎯ and I like. Motorbikes buzz around the narrow, winding island roads, beeping as they go⎯ a friendly warning to say, “hey, I’m passing you, don’t freak out and run off the road.” My taxi passes thru trash-lined streets cluttered with Hindu temples standing next to Circle K’s and roadside food carts. Not 100 meters further and we pass five star resorts like the Four Seasons with it’s guarded entrance and meticulously maintained, green landscaping. Finally we enter the Uluwatu area in the southwest corner of the Bukit Peninsula⎯ clean, uncrowded streets with a few scattered home stays and warungs. ... read more
