Saturday, July 2nd, After a wonderful two weeks, abrigado (thank you) and tchau (goodbye) Portugal. We spent the day on a long scenic journey from Porto on the western coast of Portugal to Ribadesella on the northern coast of Spain. We fell in love with, Ribadesella, a little coastal town cradled by the lush green peaks of the Picos de Europa National Park. Restaurants and popular ciderias wrap around the bustling waterfront of the small bay and wind out to a beautiful stretch of coastline. We arrived just before dark lucky to snag a spot and local cider at the popular weekend campground. Sunday, July 3rd, after a good sleep we were ready to explore. We drove through lush countryside to the dramatic peaks of the Picos de Europa (like a small scale Alps). We stopped ... read more

Friday, June 24th, we took a train from Caiscais to Lisbon. We had heard it was easier than driving into the city plus we had free transport with the Lisboa Card (and we were on a mission to get our monies worth). Lisbon is a beautiful city on the coast with a beautiful historic district and contrasting ultra modern district. As we approached we were reminded of our own city by the sea, San Francisco. Especially when we crossed a nearly identical Golden Gate Bridge. The 25 de Abril Bridge built in 1966 (30 years after the GG) is irritatingly similar, painted the same color as the famous San Francisco landmark and built by the American company that built the Bay Bridge (not the GG). Not only did they rip off one of our favorite American ... read more

Friday, June 17th, marked our first day in Portugal. We were filled with anticipation to discover a new country. Our only plan was to drive up the coast and stop at places that seemed interesting. Sometimes we would just stop in a town or at a beach have a quick look and jump back in and carry on our way. This day our first stop was the small village of Tavira. We jumped on a ferryboat for a 10-minute jaunt to Tarvia Isla. The tiny island was much more developed than we expected with a half dozen high priced seafood restaurant and crowded beaches. You can also camp on the island if you want to stay overnight. We opted to have lunch and a quick stroll to the beach before heading back to the mainland and ... read more

Monday, Jun 13th - Tuesday, June 14th. After a weekend being transported to the 18 century on the dusty roads of tiny El Rocio we were ready for the beaches of nearby Costa de Luz. It was so refreshing to feel the sea air as we reached the coast. We stopped off in Cadiz for lunch on the way. Cadiz is a small peninsula where high rises link old world buildings and beautiful beaches. We ate at a busy seaside spot called, La Merea. I had some delicious Pulpo Gallego and John had Bacalao Dorado. After lunch we had a brief siesta on the warm beach. That afternoon we settled into a little bungalow in the seaside village of Los Canos de Meca. When searching for the bungalow we found an ideal little place called Pura ... read more

Friday, June 10th, we drove 12 hours from France to the Andalusia region of Southern Spain. We arrived at 9pm in the tiny town of El Rocio. We hit traffic coming into town from the pilgrimage of thousands coming into town for the Romeria del Rocio festival. The pilgrimage is said to be the largest Europe. People (Romeros) travel from all over Spain in middle aged clothing and horse drawn wagons to the Guadalquivir River by the village of Almonte to see the virgin Mary statue in the cathedral and partake in a huge Spanish fiesta which carries on for three straight days. Cars aren't allowed at this Spanish festival so everyone rides around the dirt road town on horseback or by horse drawn carriage. The women dress in brightly colored flamenco dresses and the men ... read more

June 6th, we left bustling Barcelona for the beaches of Biarritz, France. The turned from urban buildings to lush mountainous landscapes as we rove though the border of the Pyrenes mountains. We arrived late evening to warm greeting from our friends who had prepared a meal for us. We caught up over a glass of French wine before retreating our cozy bedroom in the lovely flat that we spent the next four days enjoying. June 7th, we got up early to visit the local market. It was just a few blocks from the flat. We entered the indoor market to find rows and rows of delicious cheeses, meats, fresh fruit, vegetables and wine (of course). We were spoilt for choice, which made planning dinner our biggest challenge of the day (I know you don’t feel any ... read more

May 31st, we were experiencing major culture shock traveling to four very different countries within the day. We left Tanzania at 2:15am. 5 hours later we were flying over one of the wonders of the world, the Egyptian Pyramids, arriving in Cairo, Egypt. From the air, Cairo looks like it was built on another planet. The expansive dessert city with buildings set in carved out sand plots was like an ant colony. The airport was busy with groups of men in cloaks and women in headscarves with some in head to tow black cloaks only revealing their eyes through tiny slits. I noticed that interestingly many of the women did have colorful shoes. People were sitting in groups on beautiful prayer rugs on the airport floor. They had us check in again in Egypt where ... read more

Johnny wrote most of the blog for this week - we hope you enjoy. Day 83, Sunday, May 22- Day 92, Tuesday May 31st. Watching as the thick layers of dirt are being washed off the truck, I’m recalling the adventures of the past week. Each layer represents an amazing destination we visited in Tanzania. Five of us from with different homelands across the globe came together for this adventure. We had all met earlier in Pemba, Mozambique where we planned our 8 days together. Our journey across the country started when we met up in the big city of Dar Es Salaam. We set out that day for Moshi, a charming village at the foot of'Mt. Kilimajaro. 10 hours later we arrived late at the Honey Badger. It’s a pleasant clean place run by some ... read more

Day 76, “Domingo”, May 15th, thankfully our LAM flight was on schedule to fly to Tanzania. We arrived in Dar es Salam just in time to catch a small plane and arrive in Zanzibar at sunset. We got settled at the Africa House Hotel on the beachfront in historic Stone town. We loved the charm of the hotel that was restored from ruins in an eclectic African and Arabic style that reflects the diversity of Zanzibar. We enjoyed an intimate dinner in the hotel bar before turning in. Day 77, Monday, May 16th, we came to understand why May is low season in Zanzibar. It poured rain most of the day. We dodged the downpour as we explored the narrow streets and museums giving into being soaked but kept warm by the tropical humidity. Zanzibar has ... read more

Day 68, Wednesday, May 4th, we left Tofino by taxi to Inhambane. We took a 20-minute ferry ride across the bay to Maxixe. We had to extend our visas since we planned to head north and explore more of Mozambique. After two hours in the busy immigration office they told us it would take a week minimum (John had been to the office a week earlier and they had said they could do it same day for a fee). Discouraged we walk to the bus station to figure out transport to Vilanculos (250 miles North). It was a hot dusty afternoon and the ground was muddy from rain the night before. We walked from bus to bus asking questions in broken Portuguese finally finding a Chapa going our way. We had to pay extra for our ... read more
