I took a sleeper train from Bangkok to Vientiane, the capitol of Laos, on my birthday, March 21st. I awoke in the morning and left my second-class car, where the seats are converted into beds during the night, in search of the food car for some coffee. Walking thru the third-class cabin where the common Thai people sit on hard wooden benches and try to sleep sitting up, Red Shirts took up the majority of the seats as they were returning to the countryside after protesting all weekend— they were all drunk, grabbing me, smiling and laughing as they asked where I was from and how I liked their country. I guess they’d have to be drunk to sit on a train for 15 hours without room to lie down. Even the train security, who were ... read more

I met Paul and his friend Damian at a hotel in Chiang Mai, checked in, and headed out for a couple of long necks. In a dirty dive bar we watched a young punk rock band playing some Rage Against the Machine— reminded me of the show I never saw in high school with my buddy Parrish because the band broke up before the concert date. With my back to the bar as I watched the band, a large Thai guy stood right in front of me with his afro an inch from my face. I asked him to move; instead, he leaned in closer to me, holding his ear as if he couldn’t understand what I was saying, pushing his afro right in my face. He was an odd-looking Thai—as tall as me, fat, jean ... read more

Stepping off the plane onto the palm tree-lined tarmac and into the moist, warm air of tropical Bali, the hypnotizing chimes of Asian music dance into my ears, and I realize I have stepped into another world⎯ and I like. Motorbikes buzz around the narrow, winding island roads, beeping as they go⎯ a friendly warning to say, “hey, I’m passing you, don’t freak out and run off the road.” My taxi passes thru trash-lined streets cluttered with Hindu temples standing next to Circle K’s and roadside food carts. Not 100 meters further and we pass five star resorts like the Four Seasons with it’s guarded entrance and meticulously maintained, green landscaping. Finally we enter the Uluwatu area in the southwest corner of the Bukit Peninsula⎯ clean, uncrowded streets with a few scattered home stays and warungs. ... read more

I was “sick as” on the trip across the Tasman Sea to Auckland. I think it was a combination of seasickness and a virus….felt like dying. We were docked right where it’s all happening in Auckland - Viaduct Harbor. Lots of bars, namely an Irish Pub the crew frequented called Danny Doolan’s. Our first weekend in town kicked off with a boozy night of beers, burritos, and shots of Cuervo and Jager. Tried to shake out the cobwebs in the morning and got on it again with a trip to Waiheke Island for a winery crawl. Started off at the Stonyridge Winery⎯ a charming, ivy-covered brick cottage with creaking wood floors and arched doorways. We sat down for lunch on a covered patio with a Spanish villa feel and an incredible view of rolling green hills ... read more

Arrived in Auckland around 9pm not knowing if the Surfing Samurai would have given up on me due to the fact that I was supposed to arrive 6 hours earlier. As I push open the door exiting customs into the free world, I immediately hear “Tim!” and look up to see Tomo nearly fall on the ground with the happiness of relief. We slap hands and laugh as I explain the events that led to my late arrival. Then we load my bags in the tiny silver 2-door Toyota hatchback, strap my board on the roof with Tomo’s, and off we go into the cool New Zealand night. I’m navigating with the road map as Tomo drives us southwest to New Zealand’s most famous surfing town, Raglan. A couple of hours later we pull into the ... read more

A 14-hour flight departing the evening of November 3rd from Los Angles would put me in Sydney, Australia the morning of November 5th. Sitting with me in aisle 19 were Itzy, a German woman who lives in a beach suburb of Sydney, and Gai, a lady from Minnesota who was born in Australia and going down under to visit family. They were both really excited for me to visit Oz and gave me some great tips for my journey. Gai later put me in touch with a couple of her family members who have been so kind as to offer me help in obtaining a job when and if I decide to work in the Sydney area. Itzy and I had an interesting conversation about traveling, religion, philosophy, etc. before she drifted into a Valium induced ... read more

Cruising slowly through a maze of icebergs dotting the dark emerald, frigid, but flat, calm water. Sheer cliffs raise straight up out of the water, 3000 ft , on both our port and starboard, to the touch the grey clouds above. Waterfalls plummet down the granite faces into the water below. When we returned to Seattle after our trip to BC with the owners of the yacht, we each had four days off. I took off to see Candace in Tampa on an overnight flight . Tampa was experiencing typical south Florida summer weather, with on and off thunder showers, so we didn’t make it to the beach until my last day. Even then, the clouds rolled in at warp speed and sent us running for the car after just a couple hours of sunshine. It ... read more

The last week in Costa Rica….. Took the bus to the ferry and the bus again to San Jose to meet Candace at the airport. When she arrived, we went straight back to the bus, to the ferry, to the bus, and finally arrived back in Santa Teresa around 9pm. I had already booked and paid for a room attached to a nice house right on the beach. We met the owner and he gave us the key to enter our room, which had a separate door to the outside. I booked the room for us because of its location and because at first glance it looked like something Candace would be impressed with. However, upon moving into our room we discovered huge red ants crawling all over the floor, walls, and in the BED!!! I ... read more

Time for an update. Let me see if I can remember the last week and a half...when I go more than a week without adding an entry, the memories get fuzzy. The dogs in Central America are loco, but also really cool. They are not like American, pampered, wimpy dogs. They usually belong to a pack of 3 or 4 dogs. The pack has a terriorty consisting of a small distance, length wise, but their territory runs from the beach to the main street of town and to whereever their owners live. When dogs from outside of the pack enter the territory of another pack, the foreign dogs are immediately approached and run off by the barking and sometimes biting. If the intruders do not leave, its time for a brawl. Dogs have no problem with ... read more

I came to Central America to surf, but during the last 10 days I have been traveling around, seeing other places, meeting up with friends, and partying a little too much. Our last night in San Juan Del Sur was much like the night before... we drank a lot. Went to the music festival that was set up in the middle of the main street of town. The bands that played must be pretty popular in Latin America because they sounded good and there was a pretty large crowd. I especially enjoyed one of the bands that sounded like a mix between Sublime and the Chili Peppers...not a bad combination if you ask me. I ran into a guy from Vancouver Island named Rob who I have randomly met in four different places. Its funny to ... read more
