Varanasi After our exciting journey from the train journey, we unfortunately had to wait rather s long time to check into our hotel as they were full and nobody was checking out until 11am. But they did give us an upgrade with our room, which was very nice. We also had a guide for the afternoon, which we didn’t realize and he took us around . We visited the University. One of the biggest in the Area especially for the medical department. A couple of Temples...a weaving village..and shop of course! Having never had a guide before we’ve missed out on the hard sell of these types of places. We then walked along the riverbank and watched all the goings on. He explained the ritual of the cremation . It did seem very odd sitting on ... read more

About 2 weeks ago, I began writing about our time in Goa and the odd transition to the nunnery, as India began it’s decent into Corona Hell. I imaged I could provide a short escape for you from the daily stress of getting sick, running out of supplies or losing your job/money during this horrific time. I’ll leave those initial thoughts here before I join the rest of you in grief and worry… Upon arriving in India, I realized it turns out taylor is a completely normal, average person…when we left the airport in Mumbai and jumped into a taxi (driven by a woman…both inspiring in India and terrifying, she was a horrible driver!) he said “whats that smell?” Has there ever been a person, ever, to react differently?!!! Social Distancing is easy in a Nunnery ... read more

I started the dog rescue story with hope. A happy ending uncertain. But there was hope. So the following is the final chapter I will write while still in India. Hope is still alive. I rescued Buddy from death by tick fever, but found he has a chronic condition called mega esophagus. I could not return him to the streets as I had planned. I cared for him and sang to him and walked him and loved him, ever since he got back from the pet clinic and a temporary caretaker on January 24. Buddy was my companion and best friend. During that time I just knew there would be lots of Indian homes wanting this loving boy. But my knowing turned to despair the closer I got to my exit date with no permanent home ... read more

This holy town is located a few kilometres from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. The Suchindram temple has a Thrimoorthy linga idol – with Lord Brahma at the base, Lord Vishnu in the middle and Lord Shiva at the top. The temple is also famous for the 22-feet Hanuman statue. The history of the linga dates back several thousand years. Atri Maharishi’s wife, Anasuya, was an immaculate woman who attained great powers due to her devotion to her husband. She could perform several miracles with the water she used to wash her husband’s feet. She was the mother of the great Sages Dattreya and Durvasa. One day, Goddess Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati heard about Anasuya from Sage Narada and were eager to test her devotion. They asked their husbands’ - Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma to visit her ashram ... read more

Our drive back to Jodhpur for our overnight train to Agra was such a contrast to the drive three days previously as it was Holi, and there were hardly any vehicles on the road... still plenty of cows and goats though. Our driver stopped at a beer shop saying that as it was Holi he should buy us a drink. He came out of the shop with a big bottle of Kingfisher beer, which is the local fizzy beer but this one was 7.5% proof and a little bottle for himself....I didn’t think we’d be drinking it during our drive....at 10 am..... Apparently the police are all on holiday so no rules apply and we had all day so didn’t have to gun it along the road. Back in Jodhpur to while away a few hours ... read more

Jaisalmer Another 4 Hr drive to our next stop, Jaisalmer in the Thar Desert. Once a flourishing trade centre on the busy caravan trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, the early traders grew very rich and competed with each other to beautify their austere desert surroundings with splendid palaces and havelis (houses) Made in the local golden sandstone. The fort is unlike any other that we have seen so far and it is very like a sand castle ! There are plenty of roof top bars and cafes to sit and watch..... It's Holi festival time and people are getting ready by buying the colourful powders to smear people with or just throw it about....our driver said that we'd miss this as we'd be in the car driving to our next destination, a Desert Camp ... read more

Blogs of Rajasthan are plenty in the net, covering almost all well known places. I will add one more with a different perspective. I searched elaborately thru internet for appropriate inputs, to finalize the logistics of a weeklong tour program covering important historical places, wildlife of Ranthambore and of course the desert of Jaisalmer. But I did not get it in a nutshell and had to pick and choose from various sources. In this blog I attempted to summarize our overall experience, program, means of transport, accommodation arrangements etc. sharing our feelings, advantages and pitfalls as felt by us, to facilitate planning of an overall tour schedule by future travelers of Rajasthan. I also narrated detailed description of my location wise experience in detail, thru separate blogs. OUR PROGRAM Rajasthan is one of the most popular ... read more

Udaipur to Jodhpur We had about a 2 hour drive through interesting countryside this morning, through small villages, and busy people about their daily lives. Lots going on with animals and harvesting. Also plenty of marble cutting factories and lorries piled high with all shapes and sizes of marble.A bit further was the sand stone cutting factories and mines, this is were all the Indian patio slabs come from. Stone is used for everything, even fence posts around animals. Wood is very scarce. Set in the lush green valley of the Aravalli mountain is the Ranakpur Jain Temple, which is one of the biggest and most important Jain Temple complexes with 28 halls, 80 domes supported by the 1444 marble columns, no two alike. The carvings were beautiful. Unfortunately I didn’t pay for a camera permit ... read more

Tiruchendur is the place where Lord Muruga is said to have killed Tarakasura. As per the Puranas, Tarakasura was creating havoc as he had a boon that only Lord Shiva’s son can kill him. As Shiva was in deep meditation always and unmarried then, Tarakasura had asked for this boon from Shiva assuming that it would be impossible for Shiva to have a child in this situation. However, due to Parvati devis’s deep penance and with Kama deva’s help, Shiva’s meditation was broken, and he agreed to marry Parvati and their son Kartikeya (known as Muruga in the South) was born. He killed Tarakasura in the place where the Tiruchendur temple now exists.... read more

River Cauvery – the Goddess who wished to provide her services to mankind forever! River Cauvery (or Kaveri) originates in the Brahmagiri hills near Bhagamandala in the Coorg district. A small pond where she first bubbles up is worshiped and devotees can take a dip at the source pond there. The idol of sage Agastya is also present in the temple, along with Lord Ganesha. What is the story behind Goddess Cauvery and Agastya muni? Here is the history… There was once a King called Kavera who prayed to Lord Brahma for a child. Brahma was pleased with his prayers and a daughter Lopamudra was born to Kavera. Lopamudra always craved to serve the humanity since a child. After a few years, sage Agastya saw Lopamudra and asked her if she could marry him. She agreed ... read more
