It’s cruel how quickly the seasons change. One week I was sitting in my boxers, sweating profusely while drinking ice water (which promptly turned to hot water in my hands). The next, the sky has turned an even hazier gray, and the mornings are less than tepid. So I suppose that the weather has not changed too much, except that the difference is excrutiating without hot water. Thus, my mornings have become a painful foray into Antarctic chills. I wake up, having covered up from the fan above me, which is used to keep the air moving and, my roommate claims, [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Delhi on October 13th, at about 4 in the morning, I wasn't able to sleep so I hit streets and took some pictures. The first few days in Delhi we're so overwhelming, all the horns, people, animals, and smells left me needing to get the hell out of Delhi. So after 3 days in Delhi, I took a flight to Srinagar, in Jammu and Kashmir, where it was much calmer. In Srinagar I was staying on a houseboat on a lake, very beautiful and very relaxing, Once I had some time to reflect on what was happening I [View Full Entry]

Well, it’s not quite the gauntlet. More like a self-inflicted time crunch that will span the next month. That’s how long I have left in India. A month. It seems odd to say. I’m saving my travel funds until the program ends, and my lengthy end-of-the-term papers are growling at me. Plus, I have a whole language to re-learn, thanks to the long break in Hindi class and my sloth in studying on my own. It’s easy to not know Hindi in Delhi. So I have a month in Delhi, for better or worse. A month to savor all the tantalizing [View Full Entry]

Little Hannah, Big WWF
Little Hannah, Big WWF
WWF has its own building in Delhi which includes the TRAFFIC office and a lovely roof top view over the streets and trees
The destination for my latest venture is India, primarily Delhi, the city where anything and everything can happen in an instant. I have once again tied up the laces on my travelling boots and set off for unknown territory leaving behind the comforts of English living, clean water and safe food. The motivation behind this latest expedition is the opportunity to volunteer for three month with WWF in their wildlife TRAFFIC department. I did not know much about the trafficking of animals before I left but WWF seems to me an idol in the conservation world and so I was happy [View Full Entry]

So many gods
Diwali Lights

Another tour, another overnight train ride, this time to Jaisalmer in Rajathstan. If you are going to take a seventeen hour train ride in India in 3rd class, I highly recommend that you do it on Diwali. It is like travelling on Christmas Day; pretty much everybody is already at home and so the roads and trains are empty except for a few tourists (ans some Indian guy who started rubbing Mark's feet in the night, thinking it was one of the girls). The other thing that I would suggest is leaving at around 5pm, which gives you an hour of [View Full Entry]

Sorry everyone. I have been home for about 6 weeks now and have been meaning to update my blog but have been sick. Irony that's for sure! I travel all around India and don't get sick and once back in Australia get bronchitis and am at present on my fourth course of antibiotics. Bugger!!! Leaving Dharamsala. It was very sad leaving Dharamsala and all the wonderful friends that I had made but it was also wonderful getting to the Ashram. Such a beautiful and for me luxurious place. I am sure that I was a guru in a past life as [View Full Entry]

AMAZING CAVES. Asia » India » Maharashtra » Ajanta Caves
Ajunta Caves, Khuldabad, Daultabad fort and Ellora caves. Trains, trains and more trains. When I travel alone I always play it safe and travel what we would call first class, but Pete and Debu like to go native! Interesting for me. The hawkers that come on at each stop are amazing. You can buy all sorts of food and drinks, books and magazines, newspapers, cigarettes, chains and locks for your suitcase, children’s toys, handkerchiefs, shoes, key rings and more. Then there are the maimed beggars who crawl on and beg and little boys who scurry around the floor sweeping a patch [View Full Entry]

2.Lots of walking, but it was well worth it.
3.The caves at Ajunta are all Buddhist monasteries and temples.
4.Everything is carved out of the cliff face with no individual pieces of stone.

Goa  Asia » India » Goa » Anjuna Beach
Our stay at Goa was rather overshadowed by lots and lots of monsoonal rain. At one time we couldn't leave the place where we were staying (with friends of Pete) to go out and get food. We did brave it a couple of times and got wet right through to every last bit of clothing. Not that bad really as it still wasn't cold. I would like to go back to Goa out of the monsoon season as I believe the place really comes alive. There are some lovely palm fringed beaches and lots of interesting old buildings in the old [View Full Entry]

The Matrimandir, Auroville.
I went inside this place and do not have words to describe it. It is essentially a meditation hall and I think there would be few people who wouldn't be moved by it.
I LOVE PONDI! Yes, I probably could live here for quite a while. The French quarter has the most beautiful coloured buildings with wide tree lined streets and many choices of food too. It gets really hot at times though, which could be a problem. But I shan't ramble on here, just know that I love it and will be back there in the not too distant future, especially as I feel that I have made some lovely friends. Thank you for everything Hari, Petra and Marion. See you all in 2010. [View Full Entry]

Bangalore Botanical Gardens when Dev heard he had his visa....

By the time we arrived at the train station for our four hour ride to Delhi, the combination of dehydration from my upset stomach and the fierce sun (it was 95 in the shade) had gotten to me. Boarding the train I climbed straight into one of the upstairs bunks and just lay under a fan for the entire trip and tried to sleep. Bob tells me that I didn't miss much on the ride in, but I should have ample chances to see it as I have one more train into Delhi and two out coming up over the [View Full Entry]
