Another few days of uncertainty and obstacles have brought us to Delhi today, en route back to Montreal. It was time...to make the decision and take the first opportunity that came my way. So we’re coming home. No thanks to the Canadian government who “tried” sending 10 planes for the estimated 20,000 citizens waiting in various parts of the country. Some are choosing to stay, given the uncertainty of what their coming home to, others didn’t have the means to fly their families home at $3,000 a ticket. By some stroke of luck I was offered last minute seats on a flight taking French citizens home and jumped on it...despite having only a few hours to pack and secure a “curfew pass” to allow the private taxi I had to hire, to get through each of ... read more

Brihadeeswarar temple – also known as “Dakshina Meru” (Meru of the South) was built between 1003 and 1010 AD by the king Raja Raja Chola I. Brihat means “big, great” and Eswara means “Lord, Shiva, Supreme” – thus the name “Great Lord Shiva”. The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built in Dravidian architecture and is located on the South bank of river Cauvery in Tanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. The main Vimana tower above the sanctum is made of granite and is one of tallest in South India. The temple also has one of the largest Shiva lingas in India. Over the last 1000 years the temple has had several additions, destruction by the invading Mughals, renovations and repairs. The shrines of Goddess Parvati, Lord Murugan and Nandi are from the 16th century. The temple complex ... read more

Tungnath temple (12,073 feet) - world's highest Shiva temple According to our Puranas, Rishi Vyasa told the Pandavas to pray to Lord Shiva and beg for forgiveness as they were going to kill their cousins – the Kauravas in the unavoidable war. The Pandavas went in search of Lord Shiva, but Shiva was not willing to forgive them and hence went into hiding underground at Guptakashi (which came from the name - Gupt meaning secret and Kashi – abode of Shiva). The Pandavas still managed to find him but Shiva then rematerialized himself in the form of the bull’s body parts at 5 different locations – namely Panch Kedar – the places being Tungnath (bull’s hands), Kedarnath (hump), Rudranath (head), MadhyaMaheshwar (navel) and Kalpeshwar (hair).... read more

Hiking is becoming very popular in recent times and trekking/hiking in the Himalayan ranges in unparalleled. The beauty of the snow-capped ranges, quietness, peace, serene surroundings, peaceful villages and villagers in those areas is addictive for most trekkers. If one is looking for a good beginners’ trek with incredible spiritual significance as well – one of my favourite one is the Chopta-Chandrashila 5-day trek. The trekking path is easy for reasonably fit people and has absolutely gorgeous beauty – where you get to camp beside lakes and on lush green meadows overlooking the mighty Himalayan ranges. How do you get there? Day1 You can start your trek at Rishikesh (which is my all-time favourite location for a trek start due to its spiritual + modern atmosphere – Yoga and Aarthi by the Ganga and at the ... read more

When the Pandavas were in exile, they were once very thirsty. The youngest of them Nakul set out to get some water for all. He saw this beautiful lake and walked towards it to drink some water. Just then he heard the voice of a Yaksha who told him that he is the owner of this lake and hence Nakul can have the water only after he answers the questions asked by Yaksha. Nakul ignored Yaksha and began drinking the water, however dropped dead after a few drops. His brothers started looking for him and one by one reached the lake and in thirst drank the water – all ignoring Yaksha’s command. Sahadev, Arjun and Bheema dropped one after the other. Finally, Yudhisthira landed there and was in shock seeing all his brothers lying beside the ... read more

ishikesh HotelsMap This holy town got its name from the Sanskrit name Hrishikesha – which means “Lord of the senses”. Several rishis and saints have lived here due to its aura and spiritual significance. The holy Ganga flows through the entire town purifying the entire town. There are temples which are hundreds of years old and yoga centers throughout the town. Apart from being a spiritual town it is also the “International Yoga capital of the world”. Being the Yoga capital, the town is filled with multinational people and yogis, and thus wonderful international food joints. ... read more

Mission Ranthambore - Day 1 Our plan was to reach Jaipur by early morning flight from Bengaluru (6 AM) and rush to Sawai Madhopur directly, to attend the Afternoon jeep safari at Ranthambore National Park, same day. Reporting time for safari was 2 PM, very tight schedule. Any delay in between would jeopardize our program. There were repeated news of early morning flight delays during immediately preceding days due to fog and technical issues. It was a risk but re-arrangement of our booking would have been costlier. Both (Myself and my wife) of us could not sleep the previous night in excitement. Keeping our fingers crossed we reached the Bengaluru Airport departure gate. Flight departed in time. A sigh of relief. Fortunately flight landed at Jaipur on time also (around 8.45 AM). First encounter with early ... read more

Gaumukh glacier is the source of river Bhagirathi – which ultimately merges with river Alakananda at Dev Prayag to form the holy river Ganga. The Gaumukh Tapovan trek is a Must-do for every trekker due to its unpredictable challenging conditions and stunning beauty. To top it, for spiritual people, it is of incredible significance as it is the source of River Ganga; and Tapovan is the abode for several yogis and rishis till date. Being a Yogini myself, these were huge reasons enough to get me excited for this trek, but as every moment during the trek passed, I realised I was in a place with astonishing history and could just feel it. It starts with a 10-hour drive from Dehradun to Dharali – a small town close to Gangotri. Dharali is one of the places ... read more

Kerela Wow, what a shock! It’s as if we’ve been put in a time machine and fast forwarded about 60years. Apart from the heat that greeted us at 10pm. our taxi driver was the only one waiting for passengers! The drive to Fort Kochi was on good roads, hardly any tooting, passed numerous large car showrooms, plenty of neon lights, not a single cow and from what we could see in the dark, no obvious piles of rubbish. Usually Fort Kochi is a very popular tourist visit, however all the attractions have been closed due to the Corona virus. There are a few White people around, very few! Consequently plenty of tuk tuk drivers trying to get a job. One guy we were talking to, asked if we could do him a favour, he didn’t want ... read more

Come to think of it, I and my friends were glad that we made a decision to visit Ladakh last year in August. It had been a long awaited trip and on my to-go-list of destination for quite some time. Excited, we flew from Jakarta to Delhi via Singapore and took connecting flight to Leh from Delhi. Landed safely in Leh in the morning, we immediately bought oxygen cans at the airport. We were greeted by our driver, Sonam, and also by the blue sky. What a perfect weather! At 3,524 meter above sea level, Leh is the joint capital city of Ladakh, formerly part of the union territory along with Jammu and Kashmir. Our accommodation, Sangaylay Palace, a full-board two-star hotel, was clean and homey. In the afternoon, we could sit at the courtyard sipping ... read more
