Hey Laura, is my bindi on straight? Can you make it straight? Laura, I just blew my nose and I can't believe what came out! I can't find my deodorant, can I use yours? These are examples of what Laura is subject to on a daily basis while rooming with me. She's a good sport. Did I tell you yet that I adore this girl!! I'm still having troubles attaching pictures and it's making me crazy. I need pictures on this blog!! I'm a much better photographer then writter, and I have some super pics!! I've taken to doing yoga in the morning with my Indian father. EVERYBODY here does yoga in the morning. In the parks, on the roof, in their yards, it's neat to see. I'd always thought of yoga as just stretching but ... read more

Did you ever see that movie Dickie Roberts Fomer Child Star with David Spade? In that movie people are always trying to get him to say "nuckin futs" because it was his tag line when he was a child actor. The family I'm staying with taught me how to say "Chock te fatay" which means "You can do it!" They beg me to say it at least 20 times a day. They seriously think it's the funniest thing in the world. I'm getting pretty tired of it but I give it my best seeing as it just cracks them up. We are staying with Balbirs family and they have shown us the meanig of hospitality. They treat us like family, better then family! We have our own flat on the 2nd floor of their home. They ... read more

I'm in Punjab with Balbirs family. They have taken us in and made us their own. This is the India that I'd imagined for myself. It's wonderful!! I've got some CRAZY stories but no time tonight. This week though, I promise. Lets just say I'm in deep now ha ha ha. I'm wearing a bindi as I write. Oh and by the way, it's saree not sari. I am having some serious technical difficulties with attaching pictures and it's very frustating. If I had a gun I'd shoot this computer to death. Hopefully I can get it worked out. Love Adrienne PS- Mom & Dad I've decided to stay an extra month, tentative plan is to fly to Texas May 10th. Gwen! I'll tell you when to start selling my possessions and sending me $$. We awoke at 5.20am (not your typical holiday time) and made a quick dash for the train. We decided to start from the bottom as it is easier to work your way up than down, so second class was how we travelled. We boarded a rather empty wagon and settled into an early morning Chai (tea). A local fellow passenger was outraged that we were charged triple the going rate for our cuppa. But at 5p a cup we assured him that it was okay. The tea man was very happy! Our journey then began and we decided second class was not that bad. The train was half empty and plenty of room to stretch your legs BUT that soon changed when we reached our first stop and what seemed like a large portion of the ... read more

Now this entry comes with a warning as many of you may find this boring as all hell, as its specifically for the Architects. I’m standing here in Chandigarh surrounded by Le Corbusier, literally there are examples of his work everywhere, there can’t be any place in the world that has so many masterpieces from a single architect. Chandigarh is an experimental city designed in1952, and is the single biggest and most significant example of urban planning, executed by Le Corbusier. It demonstrates Corbusier’s modern idiom of architecture, his radical and visionary plan of low density terrace housing, monumental government buildings, tree lined streets and green belts penetrating the orthogonal plan. Some will like his work others may not, but undeniably ‘Chandigarh is the biggest example in India of experimental architecture. It hits you on the ... read more

The last stop on our trip was Chandigarh, said to be _the_ cool city in northern India. Also said to be the cleanest and greenest. The city was planned out by some French architect. Normally, the thought of planned cities sends shivers down my spine and brings to mind memories of Irvine, California, where I just could not stand to live despite their excellent graduate school program. However, it might be that India could use a little bit of planning. For example, I was not quite as afraid for my life in the car because there are a whole bunch regularly placed of roundabouts, as opposed to the few sparsely placed traffic lights which are largely ignored that I've noticed in other India cities. As far as being posh, well, I did stop by a few ... read more

Gone were the winding mountain passes that have characterized our trip thus far… No more of the friendly roadside dhabbas our road trip became hideous, irrepressible heat, dust storms, motorway services, blaring horns, drunken guest house owners, more heat and an abundance of traffic… to say that initially we missed the mountains would be an understatement… It is just more peaceful up there… Chandigarh was our first stop… As soon as we were out of the mountains the heat was intense, the Grand Trunk road became a three lane motorway and the trucks, buses and thousands of other vehicles all vying for the best position… swerving round sleeping oxen and kamikaze motor cyclists coming the wrong way only served to exacerbated the heat… Getting to Chandigarh we were struck with the uncanny similarities between Milton Keynes ... read more

At least not all Indians are trying to screw you over, I went on a wonder to find a guest house in the morning after we spent a night at a hotel and got a taxi bike back but the guy was cluless and didn't know where he was going, plus neither did I and we both couldn't understand each other. Anyway some indian fella who spoke english approached me and said that he would take me back to my hotel which was 1 mile out of his way, thats what I call a nice guy, so not all indians are tryin to screw tourists over. Couldn't get a room so it was straight to Shimila on the next bus out!!... read more

Blog by Dave Hello again everyone, We arrived in Chandigargh after a thoroughly entertaining and also surprisingly comfortable jeep ride with the guys we met on our last night in Dharamsala/McLeod Ganj. There was Jon (Geordie journalist who has the most entertaining life ever and kept us enraptured on our jeep ride giving annecdotes of the famous people he's interviewed - mostly music stars from Dolly Parton to Liam Gallagher), his partner Lisa (who works in a London city bank) in India for 2 weeks and Jamie (a would-be film director from Cardiff) with his mate John (a scouser* newly qualified in Law) travelling round Asia for about 6-7 months. This motley crew of six arrived at about 20:00 in Chandigarh at the first of our booked hotels, Hotel Alankar which came straight from the Lonely ... read more
