We found ourselves in Chandigarh for a few days and this is a modern town built in the 60's based on a grid system. It really is like Milton Keynes. Lots of islands, green areas, two parks and laid out gardens, flower beds etc. The roads have service lanes and cycle lanes. All the suburbs are self contained with their own shops, schools, medical centres etc. It is quite revoultianary and a pleasant change. The first morning saw me decamping to have my hair done. All the works in one of the most expensive hotels saw me paying a grand total of fifteen pounds! Hey ho! However, I have established why everyone thinks I'm Spanish. Yes it's because of my dark hair (would like to think it was my looks too but ah well!). My stylist ... read more

A short entry this time. Chandigarh is the Indian equivalent to Milton Keynes - Roundabouts, grid system "Boulevards" (although nothing near to the french meaning!) parks and a man made lake!....made us quite homesick!....actually, have been feeling quite emotional and missing everyone lots recently :( Dan - Yeah Milton Keynes it was, as I was walking down the street I suddenly thought I had woken up from a dream and was walking back to work from Tesco's at lunchtime, then all of a sudden a little Indian fellow jumped out of the bush and said "Hello my friend, come see my shop, I have many things" "Mujey cuchi nahin shar he yai baba" I grumbled.......(I don't want anything brother) Nic - So as you may be telling from our introduction to this place, we weren't particularly ... read more

I've only ever been in one other purpose-built city, and I have to say, it was equally as odd. Or rather, Chandigarh seemed to me to be as equally as odd as the first purpose-built city, Canberra. Originally designed by two American architects, and finished (after one of the original architects died in a plane crash) by a Swiss architect, the city has wide open roads, lined, no less, by trees, situated on a grid which intersects at roundabout after roundabout. The separate areas of the city are labeled as "sectors", numbered in a logical and coherent order, with corresponding road signs. We even found a supermarket! It's not an India Jason or I were (or are, for that matter) familiar with, and it was ever so slightly unnerving. Even the people in Chandigarh don't behave ... read more

It had to come sometime, but by anyone's estimation this is too soon. Returning from Mcleod Ganj on a long but good bus ride, we pulled into Chandigarh to find ourselves in a great room. Nauseous and unimpressed by Indian night life, we turned in to get up early for the next day. All was well, but with storm clouds on the horizon. It came out during the night that Lucy had had enough; the only choice was whether I'd join her right away on the return to England. The Nek Chand rock garden the next morning was odd in all ways. Mcleod Ganj has such a heavy Tibetan refugee population that we'd gotten unfamiliar with the staring ways of India's youth; at the Nek, the long, smouldering looks returned. Unfortunately, they were given entirely by ... read more

The Chandigarh Trip - May 2008 May is considered to be one of the hottest months in the northern part of India. During this period people typically remain indoors or migrate to colder places in Himachal. However this summer it was going to be different, else who would have predicted rains that would cool down the area radically? One of these cold days in May I was driving down to office on a Thursday morning with the windows of my SUV rolled down, which I typically do not because of the heat and the pollution. This day was different I could feel the cold breeze kissing my face, the rain last night had washed all the trees green. The road was pitch black and clean. I felt as if I was on some hills. But ... read more

I was just reading my previous entries and laughing my head off. I hope you all enjoy this blog as much as I do. Could I be any more dramatic? I bet I could but I'll spare you!! Am I the worst speller ever? That's even with me asking Laura how to spell every other word. I noticed I've told you the same thing twice sometimes but that's how you'll know it's important. I can't even begin to cover all the spectacular things that happen in a day but if I ever come home I'll have some wonderful stories to tell (key words- if I ever come home) How's your day? Mine was perfect. Laura and I had our driver take us shopping. We lucked out and found the BEST SPA EVER!!! It was like a ... read more

Since I last wrote from Jaipur I've lost like 7lbs, maybe I'm exaggerating a little but I'll tell you one thing and you can take this one to the bank, food poisoning is AWFUL!! It was a 3 hour drive from Jaipur to Pushkar and I was deteriorating the entire way. By the time we got there I couldn't even hold my head up and I had the worst stomach pains of my life. Needless to say I didn't get to see much of the Blue city as they call it, mostly just the bed in my hotel room. A doctor had to come and see me at the hotel, he spoke perfect engish and seemed to have a clue so I took the medications he prescribed for me, a course of antibiotics and some antispasmotics ... read more

1. The bathrooms are disgusting!! Imagine the worst gas station bathroom you've ever seen and multiply times 100!! and there's never any toilet paper, I now carry a roll in my purse. Also you have no idea what I went through trying to find toilet paper at the stores. It's probably easier to find black tar heroin at the vatican then toilet paper in India. 2. We drink buffalo milk and we are strict vegitarians. We hardly ever use silverwear and napkins are as readily as available as toilet paper. Instead we scoop up our food with chibattis (unleavened bread) served at every meal. 3. I can bathe my entire body, facial exfoliation and cleanse, shampoo, condition plus shave legs with 7 gallons of h20. Laura can do it in 5 gallons. 4. Tide the laundry ... read more

well the train wasn't so bad, and I managed to sleep both ways. 2 safaris and no tigers, so the hotel owner took pity on me and took me for a night drive along the road. Result!! A stunning tiger crossed the road right infront of us. He strolled across the road , not phased by our prescence. He was magnificent. Sadly as it was so dark, the photo didn't come out, although with some work, maybe? Other than this we saw mostly deer, monkeys, peacocks and a few elephants. I think I was spoilt in Africa last year. The stats (you can take the gaccountant out of the country, but not the accountant out the girl!!!) tell me you're looking at this, feel free to add a comment, it would be good to hear from ... read more
