I know I'm behind on blogging, so hopefully the next few blogs will get us all caught up! The trip to Delhi from Phuket was one of the longest days of our trip. Jonathan facebooked at 0452 in Phuket, we left the hotel at 0550, flew to Bangkok at 0700, transferred in Bangkok at 0900, had layover in the Cathay lounge until 1700, landed in Delhi at 2300 (-2 hours) and then drive four hours (w a driver) to arrive in Chandigarh at 0330 to the Aggarwal house, greeted by Mrs. Aggarwal who then had her driver bring us to our hotel. Around 24 hours of travel! After clearing customs in Delhi, we were met by hundreds of random people standing in and out of the building waiting to pick people up. So many signs, but ... read more

Because we enjoyed Vijay Singh Mankotia’s knowledge of the off-roads we asked him to suggest the most picteresque road to our 11th Mahindra Homestay location - Citrus County at Hoshiarpur and he chalked out a route via the Maharana Pratap Sagar Dam. The Siwaliks in this region are soft and friable. These hills are composed mainly of clay sand, sand rocks and poorly bedded sandstones... and unless you go and touch the hard surface you would think they are sand dunes. Harkreet Singh was among the first hosts to call us confirming our booking (over a month ago... before we left Chennai on this long Mahindra Homestays trip), and was impatiently waiting to recieve us. He was so eager to make sure we got there quickly that he sent his driver with his cell phone to ... read more

The drive back down to Chandigarh from Shimla was lovely. We left fairly early in the morning, the air was crisp and clear and there was very little traffic. The trip down took only 3.5 hours this time (an hour and a half less than going up). Chandigarh is a large modern city with wide tree lined avenues. It was planned and designed, starting in 1947, to be the new capital of the Punjab, after Lahore the previous capital was allocated to Pakistan. There are lovely parks ad gardens, a beautiful lake, walled communities and the whole apperance is very tidy and clean. The city is set out in sectors.; there are street maps, and apparently a ban on industrial activity (and home businesses?) which seems to have been effective in limiting the air pollution. We ... read more

We woke in Shimla to foggy misty rain which the man at the hotel told us was monsoon in Shimla - the next two months would be like that. There was no view as the fog shrouded everything and even though the light rain lifted later in the day the white foggy look over the mountains remained. It was pleasantly cool however. We had a busy day as we had many small jobs to do. First we found a doctor who owned a local pharmacy who gave us another 3 months supply each of our malaria medication - hopefully they drugs aren't counterfeit. The pharmacy was very busy with local trade so obviously was trusted by the locals. Next I bought some fabrics and scarves which I took back to Bandbox to be wrapped by a ... read more

Olemme nyt Intian ainoassa suunnitellussa kaupungissa. Ranskalainen arkkitehti sai 1950-luvulla tehtavakseen luoda kaupungin lahes tyhjasta. Kaikesta huomaa, etta tama on viimeisen paalle suunniteltu kaupunki, mika on hyvin epaintialaista. Sielta loytyvat kaikki muotimerkit, kuten ... read more

In the plane when it took off it was really scary because it went first really slow but then in a few seconds it started to go really fast, it was really loud and scary too. In the plane we hated our seatings because we had to sit away from our dad. In front of our seats there were mini tv's, on the tv's you could watch tv's for ever age and movies too in ever laguage. On the tv's I watch movies ,1 movie I watched in punjabi called Singh is King and lots of English movies too.At dinner time the food was panneer, rice, water and I hated it becazuse it had no taste in it so I didn't eat it , instead I kept drinking juice to cheer up my stomach. At night I ... read more

Our four hour train journey from Delhi to Chandigarh turned into a seven hour one without any explaination but we are starting to get used to India's funny little ways and weren't bothered too much. Also sitting on a crowded train for seven hours is still preferable to being in Delhi. It was late and hungry that we arrived at our hotel so first thing we did was look for somewhere to eat. We had been told that Punjabi food would be similar to Indian food that we have in the UK and they weren't wrong. We were also told that people here are friendlier which is definately true. We found a curry house that sold chicken and ordered what was essentially a chicken tikka massala. As at home we were given a ridiculous amount of ... read more

The last few days in Chandigarh have been great. Its a wonderful city thats left a fantastic impression on me of Punjabi people. A few days ago I went and had a look at Le Corbusier's Secretariat building, the High Council Building, and the Assembly Hall. Each building was unique, striking, and extremely well designed. It was quite an ordeal to get all of the permissions organized. I needed one set filled out in triplicate saying I should be granted permission, then another set for each building to obtain permission, and another set for each building for photography. Finally I needed a couple of passes at various checkpoints, and anywhere in the viscinity of the Secretariat building I was accompanied by armed guards. All the headache of paperwork was well worth it though as the buildings ... read more

Chandigarh is a shining example of what India will become in the future as it becomes more and more developed. It is the capital city of the Punjab province; however, its size does not reflect it. Only home to aproximately 1 million citizens it seems to me that its in contrast to other major Indian centers on a lot of different levels. Its clean, wide, perfectly paved and paralell streets resemble a North American city far more than an Indian one. Orderly traffic flows here make crossing streets easy. And the streets here are nothing like the rest of the India I have seen so far. Glass windowed, air conditioned grocery markets, and clothing stores along with any other kind of business you can imagine makes me question whether I havent crossed into a completely different ... read more
