Hi All, Today was a fun day, even though the weather here is crummy. It has been foggy, rainy, and cool since i got here. But, even so I'm having a good time. Last night at the hostel a bunch of people from Hong Kong showed up to spend the night at the hostel and get up early to hike up Lantau Mountain to see the sunrise. Apparently, that's a popular thing to do. So, they were all BBQing and hanging out, so i joined in and it was a fun time. A lot of them spoke english well enough to have decent conversations. They all spoke Cantonese, but knew some Mandarin also. So, it was fun communicating in whatever language was best, usually english. They helped me with some logistical stuff about getting to HK ... read more

Right, in the "Blogging" world I am still in Hong Kong whereas in fact I am now in Australia so you'll have to bear with me as I am writing this from what seems like a distant memory. At some point in my trip I took a tour to see the Big Buddha on Lantau Island. We decided to take the tourist route onboard a Cable Car which stretches over land and sea. This gave me the opportunity to take some spectacular photographs of Hong Kong from very high up, or so i thought. The ride was a bit of a bust as fog covered most of Hong Kong as you can see from the photo. However it was still pretty cool to go so high and far in a surprisingly sturdy box. We arrived at ... read more

Hong Kong, the pearl of China, well, the pearl of the parts of China I've been to so far. Hong Kong is a truely modern city, the practically spotless subway, the neon lit streets, the giant hotels, and not to mention Disneyland Hong Kong! Hong Kong has also eliminated smoking in public areas as of 2007, so thats a nice touch as well! Upon arriving in HK we bought a 3 day subway pass which included a ride on the Airport Express subway line to get us into the city proper. It wasn't exactly an effortless expreience riding on the crowded lines with our big backpacks, but it worked just fine. We had a short walk from the subway to where we wanted to stay in Kowloon and all along the way we were approached by ... read more

Bis dahin viele Grüße, Svenja... read more

Ok day 2 - cloudy, drizzling then RAIN to STORM! Went to McDonald's for breakfast, since that was the included breakfast (voucher). It's just up the street from the hotel, so it was also a nice walk. I got an Egg McMuffin, hash brown and hot choc. Had to eat quickly since the pick-up time was 730am. First up this morning is the half day city tour which I did NOT want to do, but would you believe if you didn't join this tour you pay an extra USD$25?!? Ain't that just the craziest? So anyway, on our way to the first stop, we picked up other travelers from 2 more hotels, all from the Philippines also. We got off at the Kowloon Waterfront, supposedly one of the best photo spots; always in postcards etc. But ... read more

When I got the news that someone I loved is gone, I wanted to honor him and my memories of him. I thought I might travel to one of the outlying islands surrounding Hong Kong, Lantau Island, and spend some time 'with' Mark. I am thankful we shared sunsets and sunrises, campfires, lakehouses and starry Texas skies, good Kentucky whiskey and Houston Astros games. I will be the same age as Mark lived when my journey comes to an end here--so, I want to make the most of the time I have on this journey--as he and the Buddha said "love it and let it go". Watch more sunsets and sunrises, gaze at more starry skies and stare into more campfires--for Mark, that was what this life was about. And when we're petty toward someone else ... read more

My second day in Hong Kong went well. I started the morning off by eating at what would become my Hong Kong culinary staple: Starbucks. Sad, but true. I caught a ferry to Lantau, one of the outlying islands around Hong Kong. I was on my way to see the giant Buddha and Po Lin Monastery on top of one of the island’s mountains, which according to the guide book I picked up, was one of Hong Kong’s top 10 sights. Of course, since I had to take a ferry there, the water would be incredibly rough and the weather would be overcast. Luckily, I don’t get seasick but some of my fellow passengers weren’t so lucky. I moved away from them. The boat was just pitching up and down in the waves once we got ... read more

After another round of walking and sight-seeing we returned to our hotel for some brief rest. We had some Mickey pancakes with raspberries as filling and boy oh boy it blew me out of my sit. Then, we rendezvous with GOOFY at the lobby where we had some photo shoot before heading back to the park. Can't wait to be back soon........ read more

27th August 2006 We were on a mission today; we had to venture over to Hong Hum railway station to check out the train ticket situation to Beijing. Ideally we wanted to leave today or tomorrow. The next train to leave for Beijing was due to leave on the Monday, great. One catch though, no hard sleepers left…. After weighing up our options and the cost of staying a few more days in Hong Kong until a hard sleeper was available we decide to splash out on a soft sleeper, which is pretty much double the price of the hard sleeper at 934 HK$. Basically on Asian long distance trains they categorise into 4 levels, ‘hard seat’ which I imagine is as it says, a ‘seat that’s hard’, ‘soft seat’… ditto, ‘hard sleeper’, this is a ... read more
