Weather in Hong Kong can get a bit unpredictable around this time of year, I am starting to realise! Last weekend I went on a camping trip to Lantau Island. It was beautiful Sunshine when I woke up in my tent and I spent the morning laying on the beach....now I find myself needing more of a winter wardrobe for school because it is cold?! About 40 of us went to Pui O campsite on Lantau Island last Saturday afternoon, about an hour away by ferry/bus. We had beers and a barbecue for hours and lots of laughs. Laying on the beach looking up at the full moon, listening to the waves, it was so nice and chilled out. We stayed up late sitting on the beach chatting and having a laugh, then eventually climbed into ... read more

From Yong Feng, we turned our wheels southwards from Yong Feng, stopping off to enjoy a day at Ding Hu mountain park. This turned out to be less of a natural park than you would expect - more like a recreational area - Elvaston Castle meets Centre Parks. However, we did discover a footpath that promised to offer some seclusion and a chance to glimpse the wildlife. To access it, we had to take a boat ride but, once aboard the boat, we were aghast to find that we had inadverdently joined a tour group, complete with flag-waving guide. We were horrified lest we had to wear orange caps like the other group members and walk in line along the footpath. Fortunately, we disgraced ourselves by wandering off in the first attraction - a butterfly house ... read more

How to have a good day off work... Step one...the lie in! No 6.30 am alarm hurrah! Step two...Make sure you have some sunshine, and a bit of curiosity! and this is what may happen... On Wednesday I had the day off after the school picnic which was lovely and I had no plans really until I woke up to a lovely blue sunny sky and decided I needed a bit of beach action! Out comes the guide book and a bit of google magic, and Lantau Island was my chosen destination. I got the ferry across from Central to Mui Wo on Lantau Island. In typical teacher style, I saw some of my students at the MTR going out for the day with their parents. It was funny, a little Chinese girl smiled at me, ... read more

Today was filled with the commercial escapism that is Hong Kong Disneyland!! A day filled with Disney magic and show tunes! The MTR train to the park even had Mickey mouse shaped windows! It was a brilliantly sunny day, so we were in good spirits walking round the park, meeting Mickey and Minnie, trying on lots of Disney merchandise/being silly really! There were all the usual rides like Mad Hatter tea cups, a carousel, and Space mountain, and we watched the 'Golden Mickey's' and the Lion King show. Not a high thrill ride kind of park, but a fun day out, to remember all the songs from years ago, and the characters we used to want to be! The fireworks show at the end was really good, and a fitting end to the day....it's all about ... read more

Today was "a free day to explore on our own". I had seen a show on the Travel Channel about Hong Kong a few months before, and it had mentioned a giant Buddha on nearby Lantau Island. So, I decided I would check it out. The previous day, our local tour guide gave me instructions on how to get there. I took the subway out there, where I then boarded a bus to the Giant Buddha. The bus was a little cramped, and the roads were hilly and curvy, not the most comfortable bus ride in the world. The scenery was nice, though. I checked out the Giant Buddha, known as the Tian Tan Buddha, completed in 1993 and is "the world's tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha". It's 34 meters tall, and sits on top of ... read more

Hello everyone, Can I take a photo for you? This has been the key to meeting and connecting in conversation with fellow travellers-a great way to 'break the ice' so to speak, especially when travelling alone. The sweet deal is that the offer is reciprocated and I get photos taken of me for my camera so that I don't have to extend my arms to create my own self portrait of myself at a place. Yesterday, I took the MTR to Tung Chung station and got on the 21 bus to Tai O on Lantau Island. Lantau Island is located West of Hong Kong and has a variety of beautiful places to visit. On the Western end of Lantau is where the new airport is. The bus ride to Tai O is quite a climb through ... read more

Next morning, it was an early rise to get Bindy to the airport for her morning flight. Being an unaccompanied 'young person', she opted for special assistance to get through Hong Kong airport. She even got a sticker to show how special she was. She regretted her decision from that moment on. Rather amusing for me though. On the way to the airport we relived the trip to Sydney airport by listening to one of the most stupid songs around: Bananaphone, and then I did her the great favour of resinging a couple of lines from one of the catchiest songs in existence over and over, just to make sure she'd have a relaxing and troublefree 9 hour flight home, just with the words "watcha know bout me, watcha watcha know bout me..." going on over ... read more

Let's face it: Disneyland IS pretty much the happiest place on earth. Sure there are lines for the rides, sure the prices aren't exactly cheap, but I'll quote Bindy while in one of the gift shops: "This place makes me smile". And she's right, because even though I don't exactly get excited about birthdays anymore, or spend the night before Christmas waiting for Santa Claus, it only took Disneyland a matter of minutes to 'magically' transform my decidedly apathetic look to that of a beaming smile. It was mere nanoseconds after that that I was volunteering for ridiculous photos outside the Disney castle, or excitedly looking at the map to see what adventures lay ahead. Yes I even sang along to the Disney songs that were playing on the speakers. I've always been a bit of ... read more
