These are a few pictures of our first visit to Lantau Island in november 2005. It takes about a 50 minute ride by ferry from the pier of Hong Kong to Discovery Bay. Then take the bus to the manastery Po Lin. It is the largest outside Buddha statue in the world. The surroundings are great, beautiful scenic nature. In the monastery you can eat e perfect vegatarian lunch for about 10 euro's each. This entry is for us a test, because we now try to enter some pictures. See you. Monkey and Bear... read more

This is Tuesday, January 17th, 2006. I’m sitting in my office at the University of Hong Kong. My office is bigger than the one for the Centre for Advancement in Special Education (CASE), the entity that is hosting me as a Fulbrighter. I will share this office with one other staff member soon. They will probably be a visiting scholar as well. Settling into Daily Life As of now, my meals are being delivered three times per day by the Asia Pacific restaurant on campus. I’ve given them HK 500, and they deduct from my account every time they deliver to me. My most recent meal from them was quite good. It was rice with scrambled eggs and sausage. They make the most amazing cold and hot tea - absolutely delicious! When the meals are not ... read more

Good food and room to sleep OK, about my flight: We took off about 45 minutes late. I slept for maybe an hour or so. Then, I had linen napkins, a place setting with salad and an appetizer. After that came my beef steak, yummy vegetables, and a potato/stuffing thing. I drank coffee next, and finally, I had apple pie. Flying business is great! I had enough room in my seat so that my legs weren't even squished together! If I put my feet out straight in front of me, they didn't touch the seat ahead of me! My neck pillow worked so well. And, there was room between me and the guy next to me so that I didn't have to hold my arms in front of me. I read two books and listened to ... read more

Lantau Island I guess I'm not really a city guy because after only 2 days in the big town, I found myself looking for some countryside/nature. A great thing to do in that case is visit one of the outlying islands of Hong Kong. I chose for 'Lantau', the biggest one. I went over to the giant Buddha, they have there. It's the largest 'outdoors, seated, bronze' Buddha in the world, 34 m or so. Driving to the place, it is quite impressive to see the statue from down in the valley. It looks like a new man made hill top. The ticket to the Buddha and the Po Lin monastery included free veggie lunch at the monastery... yummie, a real feast for this guy. After all the spiritual and gastronomic stuff it was time ... read more

Writing to you from the Hong Kong Airport, we are now awaiting the plane that will take us back into our familiar realm. Thirteen hours from now, we will arrive in LA then to Denver, and finally ABQ. We will arrive about 9:30pm tonight and drive home. Remember America's days are Asia's nights. What a great trip we'll always remember (especially since Tim has four hours of videos!). Hope to see you all soon!... read more

We raced the sun around the world and met it in Hong Kong on Friday at 5:40am, Hong Kong time (Thursday at 2:40 Taos time). Our plane and its 400 passengers completed the long 14 and 1/2 hour stretch across the Pacific and landed in a sea of dark fog. The Hong Kong airport is miraculously clean and so are its people due to the peroidic automatic hand sanitizer dispensers. Upon departing the plane, we were greated with thermometers in search of the bird flu. We now await our 9:05am flight to Bangkok, Thailand where we will spend a night, then on to Kathmandu. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!... read more

Getting through paperwork I've been waiting for the U.S. State Department to grant my medical clearance for my Fulbright project in Hong Kong for several weeks now. Because I'm blind, the doctor required more medical documentation than is typically required of other grantees. My general practitioner wrote a letter detailing the kinds of supports I need to function independently in daily life. My coordinator for disability services at my university suggested language for the general practitioner's letter. Then, I had to sign a release that would allow the letter to be sent to the state department. The State Department physician even contacted the US Consulate in Hong Kong to ask them questions about me. (What these question were, I do not know.) I'm reminded of the days in K-12 school when IEP meetings were had ... read more
