In this week, I went to Eastern China again with my family. Our trip called at Hangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Nanjing. Hopefully, this trip was similar to my trip back in 2003 so I should have known about many of the places and the troubles on the road would be minimized. We flew Hong Kong Express, a new start-up airliners based here, and the fare was attractive. This was pretty much the reason we had the trip. Landing in Hangzhou was, as expected, in a hazy weather. I think I have got used to this kind of weather wherever I go in the mainland. Sadly for the people who live there, they will have to breath in the smoke everyday and have no escape. It is really sad that the rapid economic growth in China is ... read more

After leaving the comforts of Shanghai, I was off on yet another train to Huangzhou, just 2 hours South of Shanghai, to explore the quaint splendors of the lakeside town which had been recommended to me by MANY travelers I had met along the way. On the train I got to practice my Japanese with the 3 girls in my car. It always amuses people when I speak Japanese. If they're Japanese the usual response is "Wow! That's wonderful! You can speak Japanese! What a surprise!" If they're foreigners like me the response is usually, "Dude, that's CRAZY! It sounds so weird!" Either way, it amuses me;) Just off the train I met a mother-daughter team, named Jenny and Meridith Meador from Seattle, Washington. I of course talked my way into sharing a taxi with them ... read more

Huanzhou, houses the most gracious people I have ever met in China. The security guard even give me a ride by bike to my destination. Yeah, I’m positive that it has a lot to do with the unbeatable scenery which is accessible to its city’s residents. The traffic is always nice and smooth, crossing the street is no longer a scary adventure. And my eardrums get a piece of quiet without the visiting of horn made by the running vehicles. ... read more

The weeks have flown by and it's time for a well-earned break. We worked all the previous weekend, so as to have 7 consecutive days off. The students were very excited, as many of them had planned to go home to see their families and friends for the first time since Spring Festival Holidays in early February. The first week of May is known as one of China's "Golden Weeks", the others being in the first week of October, and, of course, the Spring Festival in January/February. It is a time when a large proportion of the 1.4 billion inhabitants is on the move. Something not to be taken lightly, I can assure you! Many people had warned me, "Don't even think about travelling during this time!" Consequently, I had not made any special plans. However, ... read more

There ain’t nothing that causes a fight quite like a bad shoe shine. Mine started last week near the train station, a sketchy place in any country. I was headed to Shanghai for some R and R and had time for lunch before catching the train so I was wandering around looking for adventure. I found it next to a back alley, beside a woman who was selling fried bread. I was looking for a chance to practice my language skill (or lack…) when a guy started talking to me. I didn’t get most of what he was suggesting but finally figured out he was offering me a shine. I should have caught on to his insistence. Vendors who are overly eager, the kind that grab my sleeve and start pulling, I’m learning to watch ... read more

I’ve had a vision for some years about creating a ‘salon’ in my home, a place where interesting people can come discuss interesting subjects. But for years, it remained only an idea. Then last weekend, I finally made it happen. It’s not a big leap, really, I gotta believe it is a very old idea, something only a little newer than cave men gathering to compare the tastes of deer versus bison. “Stringy,” says Og. “Gamey,” says Thak. With the Xi Hu Salon I hoped to get past the modern caveman conversation, the one I often find being shouted on the rare occasion when I go out to a local bar. “Check her out,” says Bob. “Gamey and stringy,” says Thad. I really didn’t know how to create the salon I envision, so I just ... read more

It’s sunrise, and one of the reddest I’ve ever seen. Despite the tranquil scene outside, we’re being thrown around a little by turbulence and I can feel the gap between my seatback and the fuselage changing by around ¼”, threatening to trap my head as I sleep. Don’t wings bend a lot? With my eyes closed trying to sleep, all I can see is a finite-element computer model of the fuselage with exaggerated-cartoon distortions and rainbow colours spreading throughout the members. I really need sleep now, but I only managed two hours or so.... read more
