We arrived in Hangzhou to weather that was slightly warmer again than Suzhou, after a two and a half hour trip, during which we dozed and read intermittently. We eventually found the queue for taxis, which was only about two hundred meters long, and snaked backwards and forwards inside well-defined barriers under a tin roof held up by rust and hope. On the way we were accosted by several “private” taxi drivers. These are people who own a car and offer to drive you in their “taxi” to your destination immediately, thereby avoiding having to queue up, but they also try to charge you up to ten times the usual taxi fare. Foreigners especially are targeted, because they are often naïve and also the Chinese seem to think that all foreigners are possessed of untold wealth ... read more

So we finished packing our lives into two suitcases (using space bags) and two big backpacks! It was epic! And we still had about 3 small suitcases leftover filled with unwanted DVD’s, clothes, shoes, and random crap! Mrs. Agapay, you would have gone ballistic seeing us throwing away all these things. Even Cherizze was biting her nails. Oh well, some lucky Chinese cleaner scored that junk that morning! So we got 3 hours sleep and moved our bags into our Andrew’s house and grabbed a cab to the Wuxi train station. Our first destination was Hangzhou! The train ride took about 3 and bit hours and nothing interesting happened on the train, but a sales chick trying to sell some weird spinning shit! Plus we had to catch up on some much needed sleep- thanks ... read more

We headed out of Tangkou very early - 6:30 in the morning. We thought we could get back to Hangzhou before 11:00, but we forgot about the shady bus system. The bus made a lot of stops, picked up people on the side of the road, waited at the bus stations for a long time too. It was so annoying. I guess we got a non-express ticket. At the bus stations, hawkers come onto the coach to sell you anything from chestnuts to homemade onion pancakes, to souveniers. Thoroughly annoying because it was cranky from getting up early, the bus was stuffy and hot, and somewhat smelly. The guy sitting behind CL had groddy fingernails too. Oh well. We got to Hangzhou at 12:30 pm. What a long ride. Our flight to Guilin wasn't until 7:00 ... read more

Garden City After five buses (three of which went in the wrong direction), a taxi ride, a long walk, a look of confusion when I passed two separate Ferrari dealerships, and a lot of sweating I arrived in Hangzhou: the city touted as the most beautiful in all of China, thanks to West Lake. Xi Hu, or West Lake as it is translated, is a massive lake which sits in the middle of Hangzhou and it is surrounded by immense parklands on all sides, and in its middle as well for that matter. The name “West Lake” is by no means individual and I must have seen a dozen identically named lakes throughout China, but when you mention the name to a Chinese person in any corner of the country they immediately respond with wishful words ... read more

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, located at south of Shanghai, it is one of most developed provinces of China. There are 2 main sights in the Hangzhou, the West Lake and Leifeng Pagoda. The West lake is at west side of the Hangzhou city, around the lake have a lot of bars, shops, restaurants, museum, parks, inclusive the Leifeng Pagoda, you can always see the people from every age there, it is a really nice place to spend the time. Met our guide for day in the lobby, another young girl by the name of Tracy. She spoke very good English and I was to learn that she is going to Holland to study English for a few months and will then travel to Spain to study Spanish. A fairly long drive to Wuzhen and had an interesting conversation about life in China with Tracy. Wuzhen is one of the "water towns" surrounding Shanghai. Jane had recommended Wuzhen as she said it was less commercialised than some of the others and this was true. The only slightly strange thing was that you entered the town through an entrance like it was a theme park, but as soon as you got in you didn't notice that. There weren't the usual plethora of souvenir shops, just small shops ... read more

So far, Hanzhou is the bast place. I am staying in the "West Lake" area and it's an amazing looking place. The west lake is litterally a massive lake with a beautiful park that goes around the outside of it. There are various temples and traditional Chinese style buildings, with one side a city looking 'down town' area and the other side, big rolling hills with more temples in the distance (see pictures). I went in a boat this evening with some people that I met here and we stayed on the lake untill it was dark and the lights came on and it looked fantastic. This area of the town definatly has money as there is a BMW, Ferrari & Porsche showrooms within close proximity of each other. When visiting the "Lingyin Temple" temple ... read more

Hi Guys, I left Shanghai yesterday and am now in Hangzhou. Haven't looke around yet but had to walk a fair amount yeaterday to find the hostel and it looks like an amazing place. I think there are a lot of Chinese tourists that come here. I didn't get many photographs of Shanghai but the ones that I did get, I will put on this entry for you to see. Interest from famales is, how can I say this, of a much higher level that at home in the UK. When walking through a very nice area one day, just looking at the shops I met a girl named Jisoo who was from Korea on holiday with her mum, she seemed to like me and wanted her picture taken with me (see pictures). Lately we became interested in Bamboo. The Chinese use bamboo and its products a lot and we became curiose about where all these bamboo poles come from. We ask Xiu Xiu, the receptionist girl from our hostel where can we find bamboo products and factories, and she, excited, answered - oh, I am from bamboo city! It is called Anji - 4 hours from Shanghai (not mentioned in the lonely planet), a hilly area full of Bamboo forests and bamboo industry. Actually some parts of the movie “Namer Drakon” (“Crouching tiger hidden dragon”) were pictured there. So we took an early morning bus to Anji. As we got there, we called a bamboo product factory which we found on the internet and ask to come for a visit. 20 minutes later the general manager came ... read more
