Day 6Jinchuan Old TownThe road to Jinchuan today in constant sun, as usual, although coolish on bare arms until later in morning. The first 30k was along the valley heading North along what is a very busy route for lorries and every conceivable vehicle known to China, mostly the small trucks driven by donkey engines (single and twin cylinder diesels which make a loud knock when accelerated). The small trucks looked like they were in convoy there were that many of them heading to town. Those heading our way almost gassed us unless we could pass them, which was not always difficult especially on hills. The hills came in a big way with hairpin after hairpin for 25k and with a rough road surface in many places, especially on the bends. On the descent we also ... read more

Hi All, A 4 hour bus ride from Dali to Lijiang, through some really stunning scenery, which passed without a hitch. There are a lot of places to stay in the old town and we soon found one that was in our price range. It was a wooden house in the Chinese courtyard style. Some of these touristy places are becoming very similar. Although called Old Town it has a very new feel to it and boy was it busy. While Dany had a snooze in the hotel I went in search of the Mao statue, which was easy to find. A statue which I assume was erected after his death, it had his birth and death dates on the front, yet he's dressed as a Red Guard celebrating one of China's most chaotic and violent ... read more

Hi All, We decided to hire a bicycle to go out to Baisha. We chose to take a tandem which maybe wasn't the best idea. Going was hard work because we had a headwind a slight incline and a tandem built to withstand a tank attack!!! It must of weighed a ton. We shan't do that again. Baisha is about 10 kms north of Lijiang and is again another capital city of the Naxi minority. After walking around the backstreets of this little village I could begin to imagine what Lijiang may of been like before the facelift. In the village are some temples with some religious murals. It is the only place in China to have Taoist and Buddist murals together in the same temple. The murals aren't in the best condition and how they ... read more

Oct. 4-5 - Today we are exploring Lijiang ("beautiful river") near Tibet, because we were not allowed to travel to Tibet itself. This is a smaller city, about 130,000. There are several minorities here (Bai, Na'xi, Tibetan), so the culture and style of dress is a little different from what we've seen. Certainly many people dress in modern style, but some also wear traditional Na'xi clothes with a vest or cloak, coin-like head pieces, and bright colors. The women's cloak always has 7 knots tied in the back that symbolize that they are expected to work in the fields until seven stars appear in the sky. According to our male guide, the women do all the work while the men are lazy and drink tea. The neatest thing about Lijiang is the central Old Town, which ... read more

We stayed in Shuhe by chance. Shuhe is a small village about 15 minutes from Lijiang. It also has a lot of guesthouses, restaurants, and shops but it is on a smaller scale than Lijiang and I thought it was absolutely charming. Probably the highlight of our trip. I had booked a hotel in Lijiang, so I thought. But the hotel I liked was in Shuhe so we ended up in Shuhe by accident and I am so glad that we did. We arrived on a rainy night and couldn’t see much but after a very warm welcome at the hotel were shown to our room and just loved it. The bed was very special, made from tree trunks. There was a sitting area, it was comfortable and cozy. We never spent a long time in ... read more

Oh the shame of it! I filed Pingyao under Shaanxi Province, when as everyone knows it is in Shanxi Province. This is especially shameful because we had an entire lesson where the dialogue largely consisted of whether the speaker is referring to Shaanxi Province or Shanxi Province. I didn’t like that particular lesson, I found it irritating. I mean, what difference could it possible make? So just for the record, Xi’an is the capital of Shaanxi and Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi. Or is that the opposite? To make things a little more confusing, the two provinces are right next to each other and one means west mountain pass and the other means west mountain. So we left Chongqing in heavy rain, keeping our fingers crossed for good weather, or at least not too much ... read more

CHINA: Lijiang...Rectifying my Regret...4 years in the coming. We all have regrets. Why was I so impulsive? I could have handled that better. Wish I hadn't done that. In relationships...finances... shopping...sporting moments...in travel...aspirations. Wish I could go back in time...rectify...do differently. But it's passed...irreversible...opportunity lost. All we are left with is...REGRET...that insidious worm that sucks our confidence. Somehow I had the opportunity "to rectify a regret"...something really major...something that had been eating me up for 4 years...and I received a GOLD MEDAL for doing so...yep...a Gold Medal...crazy!!! We are in Lijiang in Yunnan Provence on my first trip to China...we had New Year in Dali...so this would be early 2003. Staying just outside the old city walls...Dayan Town...home of the Naxi People... read more

Lijiang: We arrived in Lijiang shortly after I came down with food poisoning. Apparently I ate something that didn’t quite agree with me while in Dali and it finally caught up with me. I started to feel it coming on earlier in the day and thought it would pass. Bad planning on my part since we were about to get on a supposedly 200km 3 hour bus ride. It turned into 4 and a half hours. Four and a half hours of hair pin turns and steep climbs in elevation. I toughed it out, but it was one of the most trying experiences I’ve dealt with in China. I spent the next 24 hours stuck in the hotel room dealing with the effects of food sickness. Lauren had the chance to take a few strolls around ... read more

On July 26, we flew from Chengdu to Lijiang, in Yunnan Province. Our flight was in the afternoon so we were able to sleep in which was really nice. As soon as we arrived in Lijiang, we knew that life was about to get much better. The sky was blue, the hills were green, and the airport was incredibly cute and clean. Lijiang did not disappoint. It’s the oldest city in China and we were staying in the cobble-stone streets of the old town. Our first night we went wandering through the old city, stopping in random shops and sampling some snack food. We saw the historic waterwheel and the main square. We even saw some dancing! It was really, really nice. An interesting fact about Lijiang is that the old city isn’t walled. The story ... read more

Geo: 26.9025, 99.9316To say it was an epic journey to Lijiang, is an understatement! Over 30 hrs of travelling by train is bad enough, but when you add becoming ill with the flu to the mix, it makes it a hellish affair. Libby had been ill in Chengdu, and more through the fault of the air conditioning than her, it spread! The first train was a 19hr 3 tier sleeper, which wasn't to bad, apart from the gremlin I had sat on my chest. As we moved onto our hard seater for 9 hours (8 of us crammed in a small compartment, sat on 3 tier sleeper beds - not a lot of padding!) the fever started, and the feeling horrendous began. I am not sure if i have ever had the flu before, but the ... read more
