Skip it unless you want to do laundry or buy some souveniers: you're ten years too late. This is especially the case if you are going to Dali or Shangri-La (aka Zhongdian), both of which are similar, but better. I first entered the old town at night and felt like some naive boy from the provences. Literally tens of thousands of Chinese tourists go from one contrived cultural experience to the next -- like photos with llamas, cowboy hat stands, store after store selling yak meat. Every restaurant is about the same, serving western meals to tourists tapping the table in rhythm to cheesy music performances. We thought for sure that we'd never find a hotel, as we could barely even walk through the streets, but most of the Chinese tourists seem to stay outside the ... read more

Kunming is a city with too many cars, which means a lot of traffic all the time. There are hundreds of vehicles trying to avoid the multiple road constructions that happened to be everywhere. How I know this? Because I did not have any hostel reservation, thinking I would be able to manage to go directly to Dali by train. I took a taxi to 3 different places until I have found a room for the night! I tried many interesting fruits once I left my bad in a private room. I liked the one that looks brown with a flower in the top, you peel and inside there is a big grape with a hard seed. But also the local passion fruit that they offer it with a little spoon. Unfortunately the restaurants where closed ... read more

So I have discovered that I do not like overnight train rides. I rode a train from Kunming to Lijiang on the top bunk in the cart. There were 3 beds on each side. I liked that I was on the most top because Kelly gets motion sickeness and she was below me so I knew that she wouldn't throw up on me. But the train left the station at 10:30, lights were out at 11:30 and the first time I woke up was at 1:10am with motin sickness. I had rolled over onto my stomach that caused me to feel sick. So I flipped over, drank some water, and fell back to sleep. I didn't have any problems after that but I kept waking up because the train kept stopping at various stations because the ... read more

After a minibus journey to the Yunnan side of Lake Lugu, we caught a bus to Lijiang expecting a 7 hour journey but very surprised and happy to arrive in just four hours. Apparently a new road had just been completed. Throughout China we were seeing countless huge construction projects, mostly involving infrastructure. New highways, high speed rail links and subways were being built in nearly every big city. On arrival in Lijiang we set out on foot towards the Old Town - the main tourist area. We found it quickly, after a bit of local help, and made our way through the pedestrianized streets to our hostel, arguing only occasionally on route about which direction to head in. The Old Town was an impressive sight in itself, a maze of streets, narrow walkways and small ... read more

These photos are from an epic hike through The Tiger Leaping Gorge (TLG), Yunnan. That was definately one of the best hikes I did. I have thousands of photos just from those few days. Along the route are hostels that cost less than $2. The later part of this set is from BaiShuiTai. These are natural terraces just a few hours by bus from TLG.... read more

I have finally taken the time to sort through the thousands of photos from my last few weeks in China. These are some of the first ones I pulled from staying with a friend near BaoShan, Yunnan. Her family is from a small village in the hills. It was amazing to see how family life goes on there. There are a few photos from Shanghai before I flew out. I am preparing for my next trip to Turkey and decided I should post the photos I still have from China before I go. Many more photos to come, dont worry.... read more

Our flight to Chengdu was an assault on the senses. We were packed in with nearly 400 over-excited Chinese pensioners all jabbering away and constantly moving from their allocated seats. As the plane landed on the runway the chaos continued with people up and collecting their bags before we had even taxied to the stand! A most entertaining experience. Chengdu is a city of over 9 million people, and many of them were in People’s Park on Sunday morning. It was great just wandering around watching people practising Tai Chi, badminton (including one old dear in red high-heel boots), martial arts and even ballroom dancing (…cha-cha-cha). A particular favourite of ours was the older group of people and their rousing renditions of traditional Chinese songs. These were punctuated by the screeching sounds of karaoke, courtesy of ... read more

Sin got up early today to hit the gym. Surprised he has energy left in him as I am completely exhausted. I woke up to find almost 400 e-mails on my Blackberry that had not reached me these last few days in the mountains. Following a Western breakfast, and leaving my car behind, we headed for Tiger Leaping Gorge and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with it’s 9 peaks. What can I say about Tiger Leaping Gorge except it has a great name that raises expectations only not to deliver. The Snow mountains surrounding the gorge however are breathtaking. We took the Landcruiser up the valley to a secluded farmroad that led us to the start of our trek. Apparently this particular trail takes 3 whole days to complete, but time was not a luxury we ... read more

We had a bit of a hassle getting to Lijiang from Kunming, but with some help from our new international friend- Berry- we made our way to a hotel right outside the old city (aka the shopping). We explored the views surrounding the old city and then had at it and shopped our heads off. It was probably the most beautiful place I have ever shopped, and I will admit, I transformed into a shopper for the first time in my life. :) Then we went back to the hotel with our ridiculously full bags and slept blissfully.... read more

--Badminton Escapades-- I am sitting next to an Australian English teacher as he discusses the cultural plight suffered in the last half-century of China's history. Next to us is a young girl with bright eyes and dreadlocks; she is from Belarus and is studying to be a linguist at a local university. We three are among eight or nine others waiting and preparing for an annual home-cooked feast of salad, mashed potatoes and lasagna, made courtesy of Signore Fabrizio. I don't know exactly how many Italian hippies are roosting in the slums of various Chinese cities, but I've found at least one of them. What a pity I would get sick later that evening and most of his delicious meal would end up half-way down the concrete pit that is a traditional Chinese toilet. "After the ... read more
